Friday, May 28

6:01 a.m. - So yesterday, my game at Mercer County, but I was then scheduled at Burlington.  That game was later canceled as well.  So I spent the afternoon after school mowing the yard, and I'm glad I did.  The weather once again today is rainy and much colder.  I don't know if I could have gotten that task in today or not, which would have meant very long grass after returning home from Wisconsin.  Also yesterday, I completed the flower bed installation, and I pulled the camper out around into the ready position.  I still have a few more things to do, as far as the drive, but I'll get to that today.  I still have several things on my list to do, so even though this is a "personal day", it will be anything but personal.  The main thing I need to do is vacuum the pool and get more pool tabs loaded in the chlorinator.  And that won't be much fun with temps in the 40's and some light rain in the forecast.  Yesterday afternoon I received an email from the IHSA telling me I had been assigned a SuperSectional.  On any normal previous year, this would be an honor.  This year, it's really like a "participation ribbon" - it's just not really a big deal.  My friend Jason received a state finals assignment for the second year in a row; now that's a big deal.

The one bit of good news I guess is that yesterday was the last "regular" school day.  Yes, we have two more days next week, but I don't think there will be many students in attendance on Tuesday - at least I hope not.  And I don't expect Wednesday to be much of a day either.  I think we teachers may have a quick staff meeting, but that shouldn't be much.  And since I'm not going to be there today, for all practical purposes my "regular" 20-21 school year is over.  Now that's a big deal.

Thursday, May 27

6:06 a.m. - I've come down with Amber's cold she had last week...dang it.  It's just a sinus cold, but I wish I wasn't getting it heading into the Memorial Day weekend on our camping trip.  We worked West Delaware at North Scott, and it was so nice to have good softball by both teams.  Granted, their season is just starting, so their girls are just happy to start playing, but it was just a totally different vibe than working Illinois softball.  Now on to today.  The rain hasn't started, but I assume it's still coming.  I won't mind getting rained out at Mercer County today.  At school...downhill slide.  Students will be reading each others' poems while I'm working on grades.  Tomorrow, they will have an exit survey, but I won't be there.  I hope to be working on the yard and getting the camping ready for departure - JayFlight#052821.  It's garbage day today, so I think I'm going to go take a warm shower, pop a vitamin C and some Tylenol, and work on the garbage detail.  I'm just going to survive another day.

Wednesday, May 26

6:25 a.m. -- We had some rain move in early this morning, and I had woken up even before that and couldn't get back to sleep.  I'm tired....sleepy tired, but that's okay.  Today at school, we will finish up the film, and the weather is supposed to be cooler, so the students should be in decent spirits.  Yesterday was a day for caring for children.  I stayed home from school to watch over Brooklyn and Brinley, which went great until about the last 10 minutes, and then we had a bit of a mishap.  Nothing serious occurred, though, so I'm calling it all a win.  Then I went down to Luebbe's to a little family celebration or Karrigan's graduation.  Then when we were there, our neighbor asked us if we could watch their children, including their newborn.  So off we went from Luebbe's to our neighbor to assist there.  After that, I ran Karrigan home, and then I went to bed and red my book for awhile.  I've started reading a biography about Robert E. Lee, and I'm enjoying it so far.  In all my investigating and reading and viewing of materials about Gettysburg, I've wanted to learn more about him.  I just didn't like the way he was portrayed in the film, and I figured there was more to him than that story.  I'll probably read more of it today.

Later today, we have our first Iowa softball games.  Despite the overnight rain and the day of rain forecasted tomorrow, my guess is that the diamond will be playable tonight.  Then tomorrow, if we get all the rain that is in the forecast, we won't be playing, which means I have an extended weekend off.  While I could use the money, I also don't mind an extended weekend.

Tuesday, May 25

6:15 a.m. - Having a balanced checking account spreadsheet is always a nice addition to a morning.  Of course, having a personal day away from school isn't bad either - especially after another marathon softball night.  My partner and I didn't walk off the field until 9:00...ugh.  Today isn't going to be a "free day", though.  I'm going to be in charge of the Harrison kids while Karrigan's pinning ceremony takes place.  And I'm scheduled to umpire again this evening.  This morning, though, is mine.  I would like to exercise somehow; I may check out the temp of the pool and get some pool exercise in.  Another possibility is to go for a bike ride.

Monday, May 24

5:40 a.m. - The sun finally decided to show itself yesterday.  It was a nice change of pace.  Yesterday I went to church, spent more money at Lowe's than I needed to, then went to HyVee and spent more money that I needed to, then came back home and worked on the flower bed and eventually worked on cleaning the pool a little.  I did manage to get a brief bike ride in and swam the length of the pool and back five times.  So I did get a little exercise.  I also read a lot of my book that Dad purchased for me.  I'm gaining a better understanding of the Battle of Gettysburg, and I continue to realize how much I really didn't know about one of the biggest events in the history of the United States.  Carmen stopped and worked on cleaning her furniture, so it was nice to see her.  Cole unexpectedly stopped for a visit, but his visit ended abruptly when he just up and left when I tried to understand what his "plan" was for next school year.  I'm a little concerned about what he's thinking, but he's a big kid and will eventually make up his own mind.  I really don't think most parents insist on a particular path for their children; they (like me) just want their children to find a path they can be successful in and enjoy life comfortably.

Today, it's back to work, but it's the last full week of the school year.  Of course before this entry this morning I had to read and respond to a parent email expressing a question about why her student had a B+ for a grade instead of an A-.  She commented that she was "kind of watching" his grades.  Ya, like I'm "kind of" ready for the school year to be over.  I sort of feel sorry for the student, but then again, I really don't.  He doesn't really strive to be a strong student, so it's not like he deserves strong grades.  I think he really only gives an effort to keep his mom off his back.  Today is sort of like an extra Friday, though, because I won't be at school tomorrow.  I'm helping with the Harrison kids while Kenzie attends Karrigan's ceremony.

Sunday, May 23

6:56 a.m. - The weather continues to be frustrating.  I worked my tail off yesterday to mow the yard.  I worked hard on Friday after school - in the rain - to get the pool ready.  And still...the skies feature clouds and occasional rain.  I think I'm going to attend church service this morning and then go to Lowe's and make some purchases.  Then the main project to accomplish is to plant the flower bed.  I'd like to ride my bike again, and maybe get some swimming exercise in too.  Something I did last night was watch the Cubs vs. Cards game.  I haven't sat and watched baseball for a long time.

This week is the last full week of school.  I've got four softball dates, and then I have Friday off from school to get the yard read to depart for a little Memorial Day get-a-way.  I'm also going to be gone Tuesday, since I'm helping with the Harrison girls for Karrigan's graduation ceremony.  So while this is officially the last full week, my last full week was last week.  Even just typing in the words LAST FULL WEEK is a relief.  May this be the end of teaching in a pandemic.

Saturday, May 22

7:25 a.m. - It's still raining!  I may never mow grass again...I'll just live in a dang jungle environment.  I was hoping to go for a bike ride and/or perhaps swim in the pool, and then I would mow the yard.  None of that is currently looking good.

Friday, May 21

6:15 a.m. - I worked a little 3-man umpiring last night.  My night was supposed to be two F/S games, but there was only one.  I got paid for two, so I jumped over on the other filed and worked 3-man with a couple other umpires.  It was good to refresh the old brain with 3-man mechanics.  Today should be a simple Friday, but apparently the natives are restless in the building....there was a fight, and we hardly every have fights in our building.  It must have been a good one, apparently there was a lot of blood from a broken nose.  It's the seniors last day...they will be extra silly.  It's a day where I try to stay in my room and hunker down away from the chaos as much as possible.  I woke up a little late this morning, so I'm going to cut this entry a little short.  I hope today goes quickly; I'd like to mow the grass and work on the pool when I get home after school.  There is no umpiring tonight, and it appears I'm not needed for youth softball this weekend.

5:16 p.m. - It freaking rained today...again...so mowing was rained out.  So I started working on the pool to vacuum.  Jack showed up to try to take a shot at the pool heater.  He got it!  He said he needed to purge the air, which I watched him do it.  It took a few tries, but the dang thing finally worked.  I put some chlorine in the pool, and now the pool is clean, warming up, and filtering.  Also, after that work was all done, Lowe's called and said our dishwasher can arrive on Monday. That's a good deal too.  So even though the yard looks terrible, the pool area is currently (knock on wood) functioning as well as can be expected.

Thursday, May 20

6:16 a.m. - Cloudy and rainy...again...but warmer.  I think I can officially declare that I'm on the "downhill slide" at school.  I've got an idea of what we will be doing through next Friday, and while it's not "balls to the walls", it's also not Looney Tunes Express.  I think what defines this school year is "frustration".  The pandemic, administrative decisions, additional duties/tasks, lack of genuine effort from students, a devaluing of education by many families...it's just been one ugly ball of frustration.  And frustration definitely exists in other school years, but the amount of frustration was unusually high this year without a whole lot of joy.  This wasn't just for the teachers and staff at school - this was for students, administrators, and families too.  We just need to get done...try to take solace in the fact that we persevered and survived, and look forward to better "post-pandemic" times.  The students didn't get a "normal school year", but they did get better than the school year that existed last Spring during lockdown.  Okay...that's my rant today...time to get going and get ready to survive another day.
