6:30 a.m. - It's been a pretty mild winter so far, so I'm guess Phil will tell us we have some more winter left.
Yesterday went as planned. I started a new book of short stories by Sherman Alexie that I am enjoying. I may finish the book today. I did push out that plan assignment for the presentations, and I'm happy with the way it turned out - allowed me to get some feedback to students that quickly got around. After school I went to McDonald's in Aledo and got a shake for Uncle Bill that I gave to him. We visited a little while before I headed off to my game. He's a resident a Brookstone now, which is a senior assisted living center. Brookstone is a nice place, so I hope it works out for him. I know he would rather have the independence and freedom of being home, but his health isn't strong enough to do that anymore. Virtually all of my relatives on my mom's side of the family have ended their lives in nursing homes except for my grandfather. My hope is that my mom will not follow that tradition.
The games last night at Mercer County weren't all that fun. Out of the four teams that played, Princeville's varsity was the only team that could make jump shots. So the f/s game was low scoring, and the varsity game was a mess. Princeville won, and Mercer County just was ridiculous. It's okay to keep playing hard, but playing hard and expecting every call to go your way when your down by twenty points can get frustrating. Play hard, but don't whine about the officiating when the outcome is inevitable. If you want the outcome to be yet determined, don't fall behind by 20 points late in the game.
Today will be interesting. Students should be practicing their speeches; many may have not even started. I've done my job, and I'll continue to do my job when the presentations do not meet expectations. And then of course students will complain that I grade to hard. Tonight we have one game to officiate at Alleman. It's another girls game, but this should be a good one. I hope there is a good crowd for a good atmosphere.
It's garbage day, so I better get going on that.
Things to do for school
- continue to score and enter presentation plan scores
- Friday, Feb. 3 - first check-in day for EN102
- print rubrics for scoresheets for presentations
- work on research paper prompt
- Write an argument in which you select an historical figure you have encountered so far in English III or U.S. History that would prove to be an effective leader for the United States in 2023. In your argument include research of relevant background information of your selected individual, as well as her/his effective leadership traits (and if you believe those traits would translate to today's modern challenges).
