Thursday, August 27

4:51 a.m. - Yesterday was another good day.  We learned about Mission Control yesterday at school, and that's going to be something to work with and around.  I think it will be a good idea for students, but we'll just have to work through all the implementation intricacies that come along with trying something new.  After school, it was back to Cambridge for a little junior high softball.  I'm going to have to get myself some new umpiring shoes because the ones I have are killing me.  

This morning I have a check-up appointment with Dr. Hussein, and then I'll head to school.  I'm sure I'll get x-rays, and he'll rush in and give me some brief comments and send me on my way.  I have one more softball game today at Mercer County, and then I can put all that stuff away for the winter.  I'm hoping for another quiet, productive day today.

Wednesday, August 26

5:01 a.m. -  Dolly Parton died yesterday.  That's sad news, and her story is all over the news now.  Other than that sad news, yesterday went okay.  Once again, I got a few things done, and I had hoped for a quiet night.  On the other hand, I got dumb luck and had a night off to attend the PTO meeting at Andalusia Elementary.  Not many folks are involved with the organization, but they sure do a lot.  I also got through another "weekly mentor meeting".  Only three staff members appeared for that, but it's okay.  

And now today....another school day but our curriculum director will be in the building to help share guidelines and expectations for what she is calling "mission control", which is basically a scheduled MTSS session for each grade level.  This has been in the works since the end of last school year with a little pilot program idea.  And once this mission control session begins in the schedule, I can start to try to figure out some other things.  And later today it's more softball - again at Cambridge/Ridgewood.  I'm working with someone new, and I'm on the bases.  We'll see how that goes.

Monday, August 24

4:52 a.m. - Yesterday was another productive day, which ended up being a productive weekend around the house.  I worked on the pool to start the day, and then I spent some time on weeds.  I went through three rounds of spraying weeds, which was six gallons of Round-Up.  The weeds in the ditch are going crazy, but that's a long way away from getting addressed as there is still standing water in the backyard from all the rain that we received earlier this month.  After the weeds were accomplished, I even got in the pool with Sophie after she and I went for a walk.  The rest of the day was quiet, simple, and relaxing.  I watched Davenport Northwest win another game in the Little League World Series, and they are looking good.  I'm not sure if they have a third pitcher, but the two pitchers they have used so far have looked very good.  I even did a lot of reading yesterday, and I think I can finish up the book I recently started.

And today....it's Monday, and it's a full week of school again.  I've found that Week 2 is generally the end of the honeymoon period to the school year.  So while Week 1 seemed very calm and wonderful, the personalities and challenges should start to surface this week.  And after school I have a softball game at Ridgewood.  I do get to see Mr. Danner, so that's a good thing!  I think this morning I may try to get out for a walk with Sophie...temps are in the 50's!

Sunday, August 23

5:34 a.m. - I got a lot done yesterday.  I did start with getting some time in the hot tub, which felt great, and then I finished my book - Demon Copperhead.  It was a book that was tough for me to read, and I suppose I felt better that there was a happy ending, but I know all too well that there aren't all happy endings with addictions.  I then worked on washing the house.  I had a bit of delay when my extendable brush broke, so I went to Edgington Hardware to replace it.  While I was out and about, I just took my rake and the loppers to the school to get that work done.  I trimmed the trees over the outside tables, and I worked on getting more mulch around the playground where it is needed.  That was a lot of work with the old rake, so my body is feeling it today.  Then it was back home and finished the house washing project, which eventually got done.  After that, I worked on the yard - mowed the yard with the rider and with the trim mower.  With all that done, we grilled some steaks for supper and waited for Kollyns to arrive.  Oh - I did also spends a little time in the morning on a walk with Sophie.  

Today...I'd really like to work on weeds - pulling weeds, spraying weeds, clipping weeds.  The problem is that I'm really tired.  We'll see how today goes.

Saturday, August 22

5:14 a.m. - Yesterday was a long Friday, but it worked out.  Early in the school year, work is about accomplishing things of the to-do list.  Plus, it's about getting around and trying to become familiar with the students and try to establish a positive start.  I have learned all the students' names that are new to me in PreK and Kindergarten, so I'll try to reinforce that next week.  Mr. Bush has said he wants more educational conversations, but then more and more management things are placed upon us.  And to be honest, I'm really not the educational expert for the elementary level any way.  I'll do my best.

After school, we went to Orion to watch Kollyns.  Jack and Rhonda were there, so Amber decided to get a pizza at Harkey's and go over there and have supper with Jack and Rhonda.  They stayed for a bit and then it was just Amber, me, and Kollyns.  I ended up trying to listen to the Rockridge game (they wone a close one) but I fell to sleep.  There ended up being a weather delay, so I was able to listen to a lot of it despite falling to sleep.  One thing I did get to do yesterday was to deposit a couple of umpiring checks.  That was nice.

Today I hope to get some work done at the house.  From Karrigan and Michael's house came Sophie.  Apparently according to Amber, Sophie is staying with us "for awhile".  I'm not exactly sure what that means.  Unfortunately the Lees are down to just one dog now, as Amber got a message that one of their dogs had died after we had left.  Amber had said he hadn't looked very good, and he had been diagnosed with problems recently.  It wasn't a big surprise, but it is still a heart punch to lose a pet.

5:14 a.m. - Yesterday was rough.  We got through the school day after an lengthy admin meeting that added a few things to my to-do list.  And then I had a softball game.  I was behind the plate, and the legs struggled, which means I struggled.  I definitely feel the effects today...I'm sleepy, and my legs and hips are sore.  

So today might be a bit tougher for a Friday after a long week.  And then apparently I'm going to be in Orion with Amber and Kollyns tonight.  I'll take my book.  At some point this weekend, I'd like to mow the yard, rake the yard, and spray weed lines.

Thursday, August 20

4:51 a.m. - Yesterday went okay.  There was a first incident of a student escorted to my office, and there was a first incident of a staff member complaining about another staff member.  Now the school year has started!  Plus, I completed my first mentoring meeting.  And after getting home, I got the tractor put back together!  It took a little more time and effort than I had hoped, but it got done eventually.  And I even had a little time to mow the yard, which needed it badly even though I had only mowed it a few days ago. 

So now today I have an admin meeting, which usually adds things to my list of things I need to get done. And sometimes there is frustration.  And after school, I have another softball game, and I'm behind the plate, which will test the leg again.  It feels better, so we will see how that goes.  I know I'm going to be a little better prepared...take something to eat and drink, and take some Tylenol.

5:05 a.m. - The school day was okay yesterday, but my first umpiring softball gig was rough.   My leg wasn't ready for that level of that type of activity.  My left ankle is really sore.  I'm glad I don't have anything tonight, so I can have a day's rest to see how it feels.  

Today....let's get through another day of trying to accomplish items on the to-do list.  Let's get the tractor put back together after I get home.  Let's get some rest.

Tuesday, August 18

4:45 a.m. - Yesterday was the first full regular day of school, and it did indeed feel like a long, long day.  But we got through it!  The weather was nice, so the students were able to go outside, which was a good thing.  I'm not sure if that is going to continue today, but you can't fight Mother Nature.  

Lynn Heath was a sub for Mrs. Zampogna, and she did great.  I believe Kim will be back today, and while our subs did great, having Kim back will be awesome.  She does so much for our building.  The new staff went through their first day, and those folks are still learning.  I did get into the kindergarten classrooms and the PreK classrooms and tried to start learning names with faces.  I hope to accomplish that by the end of the week.

After school, I set out to put the lawn tractor back together, but I ended up breaking a part, so now I have to wait for that part to get here to replace that.  Then I'll see if my most recent efforts paid off or if there is something else yet to do.  

And today....keep helping the staff...keep helping the students.  I have a lot of things on my "to-do list", but I also have my first softball game after school.  I haven't worked any softball since March of '25, so let's see how that goes.

Monday, August 17

4:47 a.m. - Yesterday was productive.  I ended up making a dent on the yardwork.  It took a little work to get there, since I needed to go get mom and dad's mower with my Husqvarna out of commission.  I also got the pushmowing done, and I even trimmed the two hedge bushes that needed some help.  After that, it was time to work on the water items - the pool and the hot tub.  After that, I headed up to Shawn's classroom and worked with Katy and Shawn on our volleyball officiating exams.  We all passed, but Shawn's score wasn't 100% because he went first and we learned from a few of his missed items.  I ended the night watching a couple episodes of Ted Lasso - I love that show.  

Today...well, since Friday was a debacle of a day, maybe today will be like a re-do, and we'll have a better "first day".  This doesn't mean I considered last Friday a bad day; it was just problematic in a lot of ways.  For one thing, the weather is going to cooperate today, so students can play outside!  More importantly, for the staff, the students can play outside!  :)  

Mrs. Zampogna won't be at school, so Mrs. Heath will be there for the first time.  That will be fun seeing her in the building.  After school I'm hoping the parts for the mower deck will be here and I can put the mower back together.  I sure hope I'm right about the  part I need to replace; otherwise, I'm going to have to have it repaired, and I don't really have the money to do that right now.

Sunday, August 16

6:46 a.m. - Well, yesterday wasn't the day I had envisioned.  It started off good, as I purchased a subscription to Apple TV, so I could watch the new Ted Lasso series.  I love it!  Amber isn't a fan, but I find it wonderful.  So I watched the two episodes of the new series where Ted takes a job as the women's coach, and then went back and started season 1 of the old series.  I may like it even more now!  

Then the  plan was to drain some water out of the pool before going shopping for some new shoes.  I did start draining the pool, and in the meantime I started pulling weeds out of the landscaping around the pool.  About that time, I got a message that Mom was looking for me because the Taylor Ridge Church had water in its basement and needed a shop vac.  When I arrived, I discovered that it needed a lot more than a shop vac.  I don't know what the heck the sump pump system is supposed to be doing there, but it's not doing it.  So I came back home and got my little pump out of the pool and used it on the basement.  After about 4 hours, I did finally get to go look for shoes and used my gift certificate from Dick's Sporting Goods that I've had for a long time.  

Then I came home, and we decided to try to work on the yard.  The yard is a disaster because of all the rain we have had this past week.  And I did get some of the yard knocked down, but then I went through another mower belt - AGAIN!  Ugh.  There has to be something wrong that is causing the belt to get too hot and fail.  So I took it apart - AGAIN - and I'm going to try a different idler arm pulley to see if that is the probelm.  Unfortunately, it's going to take a couple of days to arrive, so I'm going to borrow my mom's mower and try to get the rest of the job done.  (My guess is that I'm going to have to work on the church basement again too, as it rained a lot again last night.)

Later today, I'm meeting up with Shawn and Katy to go over our volleyball tests.  That's a 5 p.m. in Shawn's room.  I may also try to trim the bushes too...they look awful too.

Saturday, August 15

7:30 a.m. - I've been awake, but I've been doing some shopping online since I finally got a paycheck yesterday and have a little money.  

Yesterday was a doozy!  The day started off in rain - of course.  It's been raining all week, so why not have rain on the first day with students!  Then when I got to school, there was no internet, which not only means no internet but also no phones and also no security cameras.  Then, one of our buses was really late.  And all of this was happening with 10 additional staff members that needed their own training, 28 kindergarten students who needed to learn lots of stuff, and 13 new preK students who needed to learn lots of stuff.  In the midst of that I had two parent meetings with their own complications.  And yet, the staff pulled together and got through the day!  Yikes!

After school, Amber and I picked up little Kollyns and we grabbed a pizza at Happy Joe's, and we spent the rest of the night at home.  Today?  

Yup...it's still raining.  I think I'm going to need to use the sump pump to drain some water out of the pool because with all the rain, I can't get power to the pool pump - still don't have that fixed.  Maybe I'll get some exercise this morning and spend a little time in the hot tub and then go shopping for some shoes, because I doubt I'm going to get any yardwork done until tomorrow.  Maybe Amber and I will have a date night tonight too.

Friday, August 14

5:10 a.m. - Today is the day that students arrive for the first day.  (Hopefully another last first day.)  And we are as ready for a first day as we can.  There will be things that pop up today, but that's normal.

Most students will walk right in while others will be hesitant and some moms and possibly dads will also have emotions.  

Yesterday was a district day, and I went to a SPED training and then to the district welcome and luncheon.  Then I was just lazy when I got home and read my book.

Today...survive the day, and stay dry!  We have yet another morning of storms and rain.  It's never fun starting a first day with indoor recess to begin.  Mother Nature, though, will have her way, so we will do our best.

Thursday, August 13

5:26 a.m. - The last backpack night of my career?  Well maybe it was last night.  Everything went fine, but it was a long, long day.  And the day started with storms and massive rainfall, which apparently is supposed to occur yet again today.  Do we live in the Amazon rain forest?  

The work day yesterday started with some training at the high school cafeteria.  The teachers are now responsible for teaching Character Strong SEL.  I feel bad for them.  I thought they had gotten done with new curriculums after two years ago CKLA and last year iReady math.  Maybe they can look forward to a new building without any new curriculums.

After the training it was back to the building and putting out fires and answering questions.  At 11, we also had a staff meeting.  I did go get bagels at The Bagel Shop.  I thought maybe there would be goodies at the training, but there weren't.  How can you start a school year without goodies for the staff?  You can't, so I made the drive and got the bagels - which were really good!  

After the staff meeting, I continued to put out fires and get things done, including a first meeting with Makenzie Luebbe with her medical support needs for her student.  I did get home for a bit prior to driving back for backpack night.  And that event went okay.  I think I remembered the returning students' names, and no one fell on our slippery floors.  

And today?  Back at it.  At least I don't have anything after school tonight for a change!  We start at the IC building and then make our way to the high school auditorium for all the "district festivities" - it's Mr. Bush's turn now.   I need to get tomorrow and get a paycheck!  I'm tired of not having any money on hand.
