Monday, March 31

5:53 a.m. - Today is going to be a long day.  And it's cold!  For the first day back to school after spring break, I'll be taking winter weather gear with me...sheesh.  I did sleep okay last night, which was nice.

Yesterday was a bit of a "hodge-podge" day.  In the morning, I did some things around the house, and then I visited my parents around noon.  Darren and his son Peyton were there, so I visited with them as well.  Then it was back home to watch some NCAA basketball, but then I got a call from Mr. Strachan.  He was nearby and could start to educate me on caring for the Ford, which was very appreciated.  It sounds like there are some extra steps to caring for a diesel, so I'll have to continue to learn and ask questions.  He also asked about the height of the different hitch I have in the Ford, and I hadn't thought about that.  That's a wrinkle, and I'll have to work through that when figuring out the set-up.  The hitch in the Ford can be adjusted, so that's not a problem.  The problem could be in how high the Eagle is currently sitting and whether it can come down enough to sit on the hitch now where it sits.  That will be something I work on later this week.

Today, the goal is to welcome students back to school and survive the day and then survive what will hopefully be my last softball game.

By the way, I've stopped taking the Meloxicam, and I'm definitely now feeling the withdrawl symptoms as well as the additional aches and pains, including a headache.   Yay!

Tomorrow is an election day, and tomorrow we have a staff meeting at ICE...yuck.  Wednesday, we have a guest visiting the school, which will be fun.  And Friday, I'm scheduled to take the new truck and camper to Loud Thunder for the first camping adventure of the season.  I need to get in some campground time before getting the knee replaced in a couple of weeks.

Sunday, March 30

7:20 a.m. - Yesterday was pretty much all about Caleb James Hoenig.  I got down to Fort Madison a little early, so I walked around the Rodeo Park for a bit.  I used to run/jog on bike trails like that, but now-a-days, even walking hurts a lot.  Eventually, I got to Caleb's house and helped Carmen by attempting to feed Caleb some yogurt breakfast, which didn't get the day off to a great start because it wasn't mom feeding him.  Honestly, thought, that was the worst part of the day because the rest of the day we were just fine together.  I changed three pee-pee diapers, and Caleb cooperated and never pooped.  I feed him two more bottles after mom and dad left.  I also helped him take a couple of naps, and boy can that kid nap.  And we also went outside for a little stroller ride around the neighborhood.  And in the midst of all of that, we played with toys in the house, including my apple watch was pretty much the most fun toy to be had.

So now the day is down to one day until we return back to school.  While I often say that school weeks are very long weeks, I have to admit that the spring break week has been a very quick week.  There were a lot of accomplishments, though, so I would say it was also a productive week.  While Caleb was napping yesterday I did watch some videos on caring for a diesel vehicle, and I didn't realize how much maintenance there was.  I think I'd like to get the truck down to Slayden's for Trent to go through and check to see if there are filters that need changed or perhaps an oil change that needs completed.  I don't think I have the last oil change for the truck, but maybe there is a sticker on the windshield that I can look at.

Today at 1:20 the last two of the NCAA Elite 8 games will be played.  With that in mind, I have this morning to get in a little exercise, read my book, and perhaps learn a little more about the Ford and it's diesel needs.

Saturday, March 29

5:23 a.m. - I'm up early on a Saturday because I'm headed to Fort Madison to babysit for Carmen and Tyler.  I guess I won't have trouble getting used to getting up early for school in a couple of days.

Yesterday I did work with the hitch in the new truck, and I've got it where I want it I think.  I also mailed away this month's mortgage payment and went and picked up my prescription for my new eye drops.  On the way back, I stopped by the farm and visited with Darren and relocated the chickens with his help.  It was a pretty good effort for a day.  The rest of the afternoon was more laziness than anything else, and that's okay.  Jack and Rhonda stopped by in the afternoon and then Darren stopped by later in the evening, and we talked a bit and watched NCAA games.  There were some good games, and it was great watching the officials too...those guys are in shape and fast.

So other than going to Fort Madison this morning, I'm not sure what the day will bring.  I think the Harrison grandchildren may be spending the night, but don't quote me on that.

I've taken myself off of the meloxacam medicine, and I'm already feeling the headache for withdrawl.  It's going to get worse.  That medicine is a little tiny pill, but man does that thing help with overall old age arthritis.  Coming off of it is rough, but apparently it's better for surgery to be off of it because it acts like a blood thinner.  I attempted to warn Amber that I'll be moving even slower and possibly be a bit grouchier.

Friday, March 28

7:25 a.m. - And just like that, there are only three days until it's back-to-school time.  Where has the week gone?  Yesterday was a good day, as I took mom with me to Fort Madison to see Caleb and Carmen.  We had a nice visit, and then stopped for lunch at Pizza Ranch, and then we came back home, and we stopped at Kraig McPeek's place to see goats, but the goats weren't around.  Then we stopped at our house, and I showed her the truck before taking her home.  It was nice to get spend the day with her.

Today, I need to pay the mortgage payment, pick up my prescription, and then help my mom with moving the chickens.  Also, I'd like to watch more Sweet 16 college basketball this evening.  My guess is the rest of the day won't necessarily be boring, but we'll see.

Thursday, March 27

5:54 a.m. - Yesterday was BUSY!  I got a little exercise in, and then it was off to the Aledo DMV to complete paperwork on the truck I purchased.  I bought a Texas truck in Iowa, and I had to pay the Illinois Department of Revenue $1,100 in sales tax.  How in the hell does that happen?  And then my truck plates wouldn't transfer because I now have a bigger truck, so that was another $300.  Sheesh!  Then I went to get my officiating coat fixed.  That was the simplest thing of the day...I just needed a new zipper "handle" - $10 and 5 minutes later, my coat was fixed.  Then I came home and dug into the garage...got the grill out; got the Blackstone out; swept the floor and organized.  After that, I started working on transferring tools and other items out of the GMC to the Ford.  My tool box in the Ford isn't as big as the GMC, but the bed is longer in the Ford, so there is more room, it's just not in the tool box.  After that, Amber helped me get the grill and Blackstone on the deck.  And then it was off to the eye doctor.  In an amazing chain of events, the new medicine I was put on because insurance wouldn't cover the old medicine has now caused my eyes to have more pressure.  Apparently switching to a lower dose to control my pressure didn't help...really?  Duh.  Thank you Mr. Insurance Company....switch me off of the dosage of medicine that was working to force me to take a lower dosage, and it wasn't as good.  Sheesh.  So now I have to switch the type of eye drops...great.  Then it was off to the Quad City Officials Association end of the year banquet.  From 5:30 to  8 p.m., I sat with some officials and had a nice time, but I sure wish more members attended.  I didn't win any door prizes nor the 50/50 raffle, but I did rub elbows with the "big wigs" and made my appearance.

Today...won't be as busy as yesterday.  I'm taking my mom down to Fort Madison to see Caleb and Carmen - probably just a morning visit and some lunch and then back home.  I'm not sure what is happening after that, but I'll be watching some basketball tonight.

Wednesday, March 26

6:41 a.m. -  So yesterday ended quite interestingly.  We aren't really having an exotic spring break, but that doesn't mean there aren't adventures.  In the morning, Kollyns arrived, and we had her pretty much all day.  I think we ended up taking her home around 3:30.  Throughout the day, though, I was working on finalizing a purchase for a truck.  I needed to get financing where I was more comfortable, and I needed to verify the title - make sure the truck wasn't a stolen vehicle.  I was able to get both of those tasks accomplished, and then I went to the bank and signed the loan agreement and picked up the cashier's check - the biggest check I've ever had when purchasing a vehicle.  In and around the appointment at the bank, I ended up fixing that dang gas shock on the bed of the camper that somehow failed when we were cleaning underneath the bed and putting the bed together.

So ... baby in hand...cashier's check in hand...we headed to Orion to drop off Kollyns with Karrigan and then head to DeWitt to pick up the truck.  Any purchase I've ever made like that is accompanied with doubts....am I doing the right thing?  Is this purchase worth the money?  Can I afford this new purchase?  Should I just stick with what I've got?  And those questions pretty much continued right up until I handed the check over and received the title and drove away in the truck.  And on the way home, driving from DeWitt, and started to feel more and more comfortable that I did the right thing.  I have been looking to upgrade to a one-ton for awhile, but I needed to find something in my price range.  This truck I purchased was a one owner truck from Texas.  It's a simple truck...it's job is to pull a trailer, and there are not a lot of the fancy bells and whistles that come with other packages - Lariat, King Ranch, etc.  I'm under the impression that this truck was ordered by the previous owner, and he only got the package he needed.  This truck doesn't have power seats or fancy digital screens or televisions or back-up cameras or heated seats or a heated steering wheel.  It's a truck that is good at pulling trailers...and that's what I wanted.  As Amber would say, "It's a Jay truck."

Now I have work to do.  I have to go to the DMV to get the title transferred.  I need to clean out the GMC and prepare it for sale.  I need to learn how to operate/maintain a diesel truck.  I need to learn how to use a different fifth wheel hitch.  I guess life is an adventure.

So today is going to be busy.  Get to the DMV, get to Monster Sewing, get to an eye appointment, get to an officials meeting....and in between, try to get some things done here at home.

Tuesday, March 25

6:56 a.m. - Yesterday was an okay day.  I went to Illini Hospital and did all of my pre-op stuff for the knee surgery - urine test, EKG, chest x-rays - the only thing they didn't look at was the knee.  I'm sure that's a great way to make money for the hospital.  Then I tried to take my officiating coat to get it fixed at Monster Sewing, but that place apparently isn't open on Mondays.  I was home in the afternoon for a bit, and then I went to visit mom and dad.  In the middle of all that, I continued to work on pursuing the truck I'm looking at.  The financing side of things was a bit of a sticker shock, so I asked the bank to see if there was anything more they could do to get a little better payment; we ended up working something out.  Then I was encouraged to do more to make sure the title is legitimate - basically that the truck isn't a stolen vehicle and that I'm not getting scammed.  If this is a scam, these folks are really good at it, but I'll do more checking...going to see if a friend in law enforcement can help me out.

And then I read my book a little and went to bed early.  What will today bring?  I'm going to run down and talk with Trent about the truck I'm looking at.  Then I'm going to try again to get to Monster Sewing.  After that, I'm not sure what I'm doing.  I know that on Thursday I'm going to Fort Madison to see Caleb, and I'm taking my mom.  I'm also going down on Saturday to do some babysitting.

One thing I'm not doing this week is camping - the weather is crap.

Sunday, March 23

7:26 a.m. - Well, we got a few things done yesterday, and we had lunch and played on the slots a little at the casino.  And then Greg visited with his dog Winston.  And throughout the day I watched my share of college basketball.  All in all, it was a pretty good day.

I had convinced myself out of looking at that truck I was considering, but then I got a message last night that they were dropping the price by $5,000, so now I'm back considering it.  At that price, it's definitely worth it to me to consider it.  I just have to crunch some numbers and figure out if I can justify buying it with my budget.

So I'm likely going to go look at the truck.  I need to go meet with Kraig and try to help him through his promotion test for softball, and I'd like to watch a little more basketball again.

Saturday, March 22

7:50 a.m. - Oh, I have been waiting for this day!  We got through yesterday; sure there was a kindergarten student that had an accident in the bathroom; sure there were teachers that needed "a second" to talk with me; sure there were students that needed "a talking to"; sure there was a teacher that called at 6:45 a.m. needing a sub - basically, just another day in K,1,2 land.  And sure yesterday's softball game was over two hours and was a 12-9 7-inning journey in which I really screwed up a call that I should never screw up, even if it's my second game of the season.  I did get to watch basketball here and there all day, even though I fell asleep and missed all of the Illinois game, which they won.

TODAY, though, I don't have to worry about having to get subs, accidents in bathrooms, teachers needing "a second", or softball.  Whoop, whoop!

The weather isn't great, but I can deal with the cooler temperatures as long as there isn't so much wind and the rain and snow stay away.  I'd really like to get the garage unpacked and the camper packed.  I might even consider taking Sophie for a walk this morning first before I get too involved with other things.  In other news, I may go look at a truck tomorrow.

Friday, March 21

5:19 a.m. - It's here!  March 21 is here!  We just need to get through today, and then Spring Break is here!  Oh what a glorious day!

I survived yesterday, and that was no small task, as the day featured an admin meeting in the morning.  It didn't run as long as past meetings, and I focused on keeping my mouth shut in such a fashion that I don't think I upset anyone.  Then I had to have conversations with folks that "wanted a second".  At the end of the day, something new happened - we had a neighborhood dog visit us.  Later finding out that the golden retriever's name was Ranger, Ranger was a very happy, friendly dog that rather enjoyed coming into my office until we found out who he belonged to.  Sheesh.  Also during the day yesterday, I was able to keep the NCAA tournament rolling on one of my computer screens, so that was good.  The big upset of the day was McNeese State, and I picked them to win, so that's good.

Today...nothing is specifically listed on the "to-do list", and I've heard several students express that they are not going to be at school.  So it's going to be a day that will be an "adventure".  I can confidently say that I'm sure there will be surprises; the question is whether they will be good surprises or bad surprises.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.  I do have a softball game scheduled at Sherrard, and it appears like the weather is going to cooperate, which I'm not necessarily happy with.

In other news, President Trump is shutting down the Department of Education.  Every day with him as president is a shit show.  He actually had the audacity to have elementary age students around him as he signed an executive order that will send chaos, confusion, and stress throughout the country's educational system.  Everything with that guy is a show!  He's such a freaking joke, and the majority of voters in the United States voted for this moron in the last election...it just seems so surreal to me...I keep thinking this is how Germans must have felt during the time period that Hitler rose to power.  The only question is how far this idiot will get before (or perhaps if) enough people get tired enough of it.

Thursday, March 20

5:55 a.m.  - There is snow on the ground today...sheesh.  Please winter, be done.

Yesterday, the day went okay.  We had our first student council meeting with the new 4th quarter group, and that went fine.  I was able to dig into some information that will hopefully help me better understand the CKLA curriculum and how to do fidelity checks, and that was good.  The softball game I was supposed to umpire at Sherrard was called off, and that was good.

Today, there is an admin meeting.  I've expressed my views on those things before - no need to beat a dead horse.  I'm also supposed to umpire a softball game today...with temps in the 40's, I sincerely hope that doesn't happen.

It's Thursday; it's garbage day; survive and advance.  Speaking of that, the NCAA tournament starts today...it will be a late night watching basketball.  That's at least something to look forward to.

3:55 p,m. - Did I not make an entry this morning?  Perhaps not.  Yesterday's softball games at Mercer County were rough.  Today's game at Sherrard has been postponed.  Yesterday and today, the days at school have been survivable.  I am sleepy, though, because I had trouble going back to sleep last night after waking up around 2 a.m.  We are supposed to get snow tonight...sheesh.

Tuesday, March 18

5:44 a.m. - Yesterday was relatively quiet, which was good.  And we had a substitute secretary, and there was a 504 meeting.  Amidst that there was confusion, but that's pretty common in my new role as principal.  First, there's the controversy over sending spelling lists home.  Next, I was a bit surprised that in second grade now the knowledge content for ELA is learning about the Civil War.  I was sitting in on a read-aloud yesterday, and the teacher presented information to students about slavery being an issue that caused the South and North to divide.  I asked some of my colleagues in the junior high and high school their thoughts, and the thoughts were mixed.  I guess I just think the Civil War is a very important topic that really needs understood well, but the specific aspects of the Civil War, in my opinion, seem to exceed good understanding of second grade students.  I sometimes felt awkward in helping eleventh grade students understand and truly appreciate the concept of slavery in the United States...how is that accomplished in second grade without just brushing past the idea?

After school, I came home and tried out my idea with the lights problem on the camper, and it ended up being successful.  The problem was a blown fuse.  For $1.75, the lights are now working.  Sometimes a problem has a very simple and low-cost fix.  Admittedly, that's not the case very often, but it was yesterday.  Then after Amber went to bed and there was no basketball on, I ordered a movie on Amazon Prime and watched Slap Shot.  That's a crude movie, and I remember watching it a long time ago.  I don't know what made me think of it, but I just decided to watch it.  I'm glad I did.

Yesterday I did learn that replacing a knee isn't cheap.  Just the hospital bill alone is going to be over $30,000.  My part of that is initially going to be over $2,500.  Then there will be a bill from the anesthesiologist, which should be about $3,000, and I'm not sure what the surgeon is going to charge...my guess is that's going to be at least another $1,500 out of my pocket.  I'll get much of that out-of-pocket expense back after submitting it for reimbursement, but that will take awhile to get accomplished.  Sheesh.  I also was called to complete pre-op tests next Monday...that will be a great way to start my Spring Break.  One fun thing I accomplished yesterday was to order a couple of books off Amazon.  I'm trying to get back into reading more in my free time.  I miss reading more and just letting my brain relax.

And today...softball umpiring season begins.  I'm not really prepared for softball season, and I won't be doing much softball this season, but here we go.

Monday, March 17 - Happy St. Patrick's Day

5:57 a.m. - Yesterday was not the most productive day, but I did watch a lot of basketball, and I did finish another book, and I did see Chase.  He visited and showed me the car he purchased, and it was great to see him and catch up on life.

Today....hmmm...first day of the week before Spring Break...weather should cooperate, but what will be the mental capacity of the 109 students at Illinois City Elementary.  I'd like to get home and perhaps get some work done outside if it's not too windy.

I think I have one meeting today in the afternoon.  Hopefully, it will be a quiet day.  (I can always hope.)

Sunday, March 16

7:48 a.m. - Apparently, winter is not over.  I didn't recall any forecasts calling for three inches of snow on the ground this morning, but that's what we are waking up to.  And it's going to be cold too.  This was not the kind of weather I was hoping for.  I won't be working on the garage and getting the grill and Blackstone onto the deck today.  Instead, I think I'll keep things indoors again.  I'm going to read my book, and I'm going to the farm for a bit, and I don't know what else will happen from there.

Yesterday I did get my softball stuff into the HHR, and I did get basketball stuff back into my closet, and I did organize my invoice paperwork.  I guess that was enough because most of the day there were the Southwells and the Lees grandchildren and others.  I did get to watch a lot of basketball, though, which made the day better.

In other news, Donald Trump is still an idiot, and it wasn't much fun watching all Chicago schools win all of the IHSA state basketball championships.

Saturday, March 15

8:20 a.m. - Yesterday wasn't much fun.  The dentist wasn't much fun...I don't like my teeth messed with, but I go because I'm supposed to.  So when I'm there, I don't want the girl cleaning my teeth to think we are long lost best friends, and I need to hear her entire life story - just get the job done and get me out.  It shouldn't take 45 minutes to clean my teeth.  I understand she's just being nice, and she actually did a very good job, but sheesh.  And then I hustled back to ICE only to find out that the meeting I was supposed to attend had already finished.  But I went to the teacher to allow her to vent/ask questions like I should.  That's all I'm going to say about that.  I really didn't have much to do in the afternoon in my office, so I read my book and watched high school basketball.  When I got home, Amber wanted to go to the casino and have supper before the storms hit, so we did and we actually both won a little bit.  No storms hit us, but apparently my brother's neighborhood in Rolla was a victim to storms...just saw some pictures of his house and he had a tree come down on his roof.

Today is organization day for me.  At least I think so, unless my brother is going to ask me to go down to his place.  He wasn't home at the time of the storms; the team that he helps coach is in Springfield, Illinois.

Friday, March 14

5:34 a.m. - I fell asleep on the couch; woke up when we had a weird very brief rainstorm; went back to sleep after reading my book because I couldn't get back to sleep.  Then I had very sad, troubling dreams.  I get them every once in awhile...they are my "memory dreams" of my first marriage and the family times we had together.  I never want to wake up from the dreams because I always wake up with a very heavy heart.  I wonder if I had those dreams because I saw Cole yesterday.

Cole was a sub at Illinois City Elementary, and he did a wonderful job with one of our toughest classes.  It was not an easy day, and I really screwed up when I hit the wrong code for an evacuate drill and punched the code for TRE instead of ICE.  I sent Mrs. Bollman a message an apologized profusely.  Those are the last of the required safety drills that we have to complete for the school year.  Yesterday, I also got all my classified evaluations into the unit office.  Last night, I was supposed to join Amber to take Sailor back to Orion and visit with Karrigan and Kollyns.  She ended up not going, so I went.  It was nice to visit with Baby Kollyns for awhile.  I watched over her for a bit while Karrigan got some things done around the house.  So Sailor is no longer with us, but Sophie still is....much quieter and less activity this morning.

Today is going to suck - dentist appointment, meetings at ICE, half-day, storms in the evening...day is going to suck and it has nothing to do with the students.  It's pay day today...that's about the only thing that's not going to suck.

Thursday, March 13, 2025

Thursday, March 13

5:39 a.m. - It's Friday Eve.  Yesterday was a long day.  A kindergarten student had a rough day, so much of my day was spent working with that student.  At the same time, there were a couple other students that had some "struggles" that required my attention.  I did manage to get around to complete some fidelity checks, and one teacher decided she needed to tattle on other teacher(s) that may be doing things they aren't supposed to be doing according to the specific guidelines/directions of the curriculum.  What do I tell students constantly?  Don't worry about others...you have enough to worry about yourself.  Well the same thing applies to adults.  And then after school, we got the camper out of storage...which is not a simple, easy task.  Mr. Strachan has to get his camper out first, and then my camper can be removed.  Of course there was a mouse waiting for me, so I set another trap last night in the camper.  And of course there is a spring storm predicted for tomorrow night, but if I waited to get the camper out until there wasn't a spring storm in the forecast, I'd never get it out.  So, I got it out and parked it near by the house in its parking area, and Amber was able to do some of her cleaning.  Still haven't found the one mouse trap that disappeared from the camper over the winter.  At least the slides worked like they were supposed to, so apparently the trap wasn't in the slides.

TODAY....could I just not have student issues?  I need to get a couple of safety drills executed, so because it's going to be a nice day, we will be conducting the drills and getting that box checked for the school year.  I'm informing the teachers of the expected times, so hopefully we can just do it and be done with it.  I currently don't have anything on the schedule tonight, so my guess is that I will be assisting with Amber with the camper again.  There are items currently in storage in the basement that have to go back into the camper after she completes her cleaning.

And it's garbage day today, so I need to do that.

Wednesday, March 12

5:50 a.m. - Yesterday was a quieter day than Monday, which was much appreciated.  I also got the truck back, even though it wasn't completely repaired as I had hoped.  So there is more work to do on the truck, and I'm not sure when that will get done.  It sure would be nice to have an endless supply of money in order to be able to do all the things I need to do.  (Maybe it's just a wishful Wednesday.  Then again, maybe here is never enough of what we want in order to do all the things we need to do.)

I'm still waiting on my left leg to heal completely...it improves a little each day, but I still have tightness and my left ankle doesn't have the flexibility I once had prior to the start of the basketball season.

I finally received the final payment for the last of the officiating for postseason basketball, so I can now officially say I've completed the 24-25 basketball season.  Now to see how a new artificial knee will affect performance moving forward.

Today, the only "scheduled" official thing to do is host the final ICE student council meeting for the third quarter.  Next up will be a new group of members to take us through the rest of the school year.  After school, I'm going to be working on pulling the camper out of storage.  Of course, there is a huge spring storm in the forecast, but I need to get it out of storage now, so Amber stops yelling at me and before Mr. Strachan is no longer available.
