Sunday, April 30

10:30 a.m. - And here comes the rain and wind.  I'm glad we got back from the campground earlier than usual.  It was the plan to pack up a little early and get back before the high winds and potential rain arrived.  Even with the earlier start, it was still cold and windy.  And yet, we were blessed by Mother Nature to at least have a couple of good days.  Friday night was perfect, but we had the Harrison grandchildren, so it was a perfect night to have the grandkids...we had a brief campfire, and we took a hike to the lake, and we played on the playground...all the good stuff that grandparents do!  Yesterday I was a hiking maniac - four different hikes.  I took time to explore the Martin Conservation area, and I went and checked out Big Ranch Creek, and the other two hikes were with children - the first to open up the day with the Harrison grandchildren, and the evening hike with Colin Baker our neighbor, who's a fourth grader.  I was tired last night, but I didn't sleep well because my legs were aching.  No worries, though, it was a great day.  In mid-morning, I also joined Amber and the Harrisons to go out and see Pat and Kourtney and Tucker and Rosie.

So today is a get ready for the week and then rest...it's going to be tough not to take a nap.

Friday, April 28

6:01 a.m. - We are going to Loud Thunder this weekend, and we will have the Harrison children.  I'm going to scramble this morning to get the Eagle hooked up and ready to pull out as soon as I am back from the school day.  Today's weather should be great, tomorrow okay, and Sunday I'll get home as soon as possible and try to miss the high wind gusts and rain.

Yesterday?  School went okay and softball went okay, and the weather was beautiful.  I did go to Shawn's last night and pick up some firewood.

Thursday, April 27

6:30 a.m. - Yesterday featured about what I expected - some days are like that.  My battle to have expectations of students, to expect them to utilize and manage time effectively, to treat them objectively....it's a hard battle some days.  We got through the day, had a nice day to umpire softball, and then had to take the frustration of a softball coach who is tired of losing - as if his team's strengths and weaknesses are my fault.  I was pretty proud of myself after I got home though.  I spent some time with the Harrison children before they left, and then I had a little supper and got out and mowed the yard.  It was almost dark when I finished, and it was cold, but I got it done.  Now I don't have to worry about that job for the weekend.

Today...another day dealing with students and maybe a parent or two.  Then another night of softball, but at least it's another close site - headed to Mercer County.  I would like to get to the time that Friday afternoon that I'm at the campground with nice weather and a fire going in the campfire ring.

Wednesday, April 26

6:05 a.m. - Yesterday was busy...school went okay...just need to try to get students to slow down and put some unique thinking into their work versus finding the easiest and fastest means to complete work.  That's a battle that gets ever harder with the internet and Google Classroom.  Then it was off to softball...worked at West Central, and I had an inexperienced partner.  The good news was that she was willing to take suggestions.  It was a pretty lopsided game, so we didn't have a whole lot of stress...good chance to give some advice.

After the game, I had a chance to drive down through Henderson and Hancock Counties and over the bridge to Fort Madison to see Carmen and Tyler and meet their new dog Arlo.  We had a little supper, a nice visit, and Arlo and I got to know each other.  The visit meant I got home late, but it was a nice chance to see the Hoenigs.  I wished they lived closer, so I could see them more often, but they are doing great and enjoying life.  For that I'm thankful.  By the way, going across that bridge to Fort Madison ... wow, that's an interesting bridge.  Tyler said it's like the largest swing span in the world?  It's an old bridge...that's for sure.

Today...it's a Free Read Wednesday...not many of those left.  I hope to make another big dent in scoring the training path projects.  And then it's more softball...close night tonight...going to Sherrard.

Tuesday, April 25

6:11 a.m. - Yesterday....school day went fine...a little quiet since most of the senior class and many other students attended the funeral of Daniel Tayler.  I've started scoring the training project presentations, and I hope to get that done this week.  Mrs. Kline helped me with some copying to get more prepared for the next unit of instruction - transcendentalism in American literature.  Last night's game turned into a home run fest, but I had fun because I don't work with Steve Vandervinne very often.  I picked up some batteries at WalMart, so I can complete all the battery replacements of our fifteen million smoke alarms.

Today should be another day like yesterday...school...softball...return home.  The weather for this weekend does not appear to be cooperative for camping.  I'm just not a big fan of cold, breezy, rainy conditions....if I'm going to be indoors most of the time over a weekend, I might as well be home.

Monday, April 24

6:02 a.m. - Yesterday was Day 2 of the firewood cutting project.  We had hoped to get it all done, but we got stopped short due to chainsaw equipment issues.  So we will finish that up another day.  Shawn did show me how he was going about polishing his camper, so I enjoyed learning about that even though I discovered it's a lot of work.  It's something I want to do for our trailer, but it's a big job.  One thing I am sure of...my body is hurting...last night I could hardly keep my eyes open after I got home...I fell into bed before 8 p.m....took a couple of Tylenol and was out.

Today is going to be a little weird.  We are transitioning from the training path presenter series to our next instructional unit over transcendentalism.  I'm not exactly sure how that's going to look, so I'll work on it when I get to school.

The weather looks decent for softball games this weekend; unfortunately the weather is not once again looking decent for a weekend camping get-a-way.  Maybe the forecast will improve over the next couple of days.

Sunday, April 23

6:52 a.m. - Happy Anniversary Carmen and Tyler!

Yesterday went as planned.  Shawn and I battled the weather to work on the firewood project.  He used the chainsaw, and I used the splitter...we made a pretty good team and got a lot done.  I'm hoping to finish the project today.  After working on the wood, I went to Mick Louck's retirement party...it was awesome to see him honored and celebrated.

Today, I think I'm going to put a full day into splitting the wood.  My body hurts, and it will hurt again after today's efforts, but the weather isn't very good for much of anything else.

Saturday, April 22

7:58 a.m.- Last night was awful.  A smoke detector started going off at around 3 a.m.  The first time it was scary...I was up out of bed and running around looking for flames and smelling for smoke, and then I realized it must be a detector battery going bad.  I could have gone around and taken all of them down, but it was 3 a.m., so I went for the one I thought it was...mistake.  I ended up getting up about five more times to make five more attempts.  I didn't realize we had so many damn detectors in house!  In the end, it was a detector that was close to the bedroom that I had passed under multiple times.  Geez.

Yesterday was okay...got through the school day, learned a little about the new digital SAT next school year, and froze my tail off working a double-header at Mercer County.  I did celebrate the day by throwing a couple of steaks and some pork chops on the grill.

Today I'm going to try to get the log splitter fired up and split some wood over at Shawn's.  Later I need to go to a retirement party of a an old friend.  If I can't camp this weekend because of the cold weather, I may as well try to get some other things accomplished.  I may wait until tomorrow to try to mow the yard.

Friday, April 21

5:59 a.m. - Yesterday's projects viewed in the classes had good content for the most part.  There were many students that didn't spend much time on being creative with the slides, and that will decrease their grades, but at least they got the content portion.  In addition, yesterday's softball at Moline was cancelled.  I can't say that I mind.  I did pick up a game today at Mercer County, but we aren't camping, so I may as well run over to Aledo, freeze my butt off, earn a little money, and then come home.  The weather is just too cold for a weekend camping trip this weekend.

Today is a half-day.  I think for my SIP activity, I've received approval to research next year's new digital SAT.  At least this is something I'm interested in.

I continue to enjoy the research I'm conducting on Loud Thunder.  Yesterday, I continued to learn more about activities that occurred prior to Charles J. Searle owning the land.  (Searle would eventually sell the land to Rock Island County.)  I know it's a little geeky, but I enjoy digging and finding nuggets of information from a historical perspective.  Maybe I'm just getting old, and that sort of stuff interests me now at my age.

I spoke with Cole on the phone last night.  He continues to live near the L.A. area.  Apparently he's getting by on money he's earning on umpiring.  The rest of his life is a bit obscure...he doesn't share much.  I think he spends a lot of time just enjoying the west coast....the weather, the hiking, the different stuff to do.  I tried to call Carmen, but she apparently was napping; I did get an email from her, and she said she and Tyler and their dog Arlo are doing well.  Apparently she and Tyler are both looking for different jobs.

There isn't a whole lot of spring IHSA softball days left.  With regionals starting mid-May, those assignments should be coming out pretty soon.  I guess seeding isn't completed until May 2 and May 9, so assignments won't yet be out for a few weeks.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up going 3A/4A this season.

6:21 a.m. - Yesterday was a great day.  I filled the LP tanks at Blick N Blick in the morning, and then I went to my appointment and my eyes are okay...no changes in eye pressures, which is good.  Then I went to the Rock Island Historical Society and learned a little about conducting research there.  I went old school and just took in pen and paper with me.  One particular folder of newspaper clippings had a lot of information about Loud Thunder, so I spent most of my time with that.  Then we had softball at Annawan, which went fine.

Today is assignment due day.  That means of course that I have emails from students waiting for me complaining or stressed out that they didn't do something right or didn't get done or something didn't work - this all of course after squandering time earlier in the week.  So I will need to breathe deep and just go with the flow.  Later today it's softball at Moline if the weather doesn't go sour, which it's forecast to do.

Wednesday, April 19

6:12 a.m. - I'm taking the day away from my job and school today.  I've got an eye appointment, so I'm going to make other uses of my day around the appointment.  I think this morning I'm going to load up all my LP tanks and go to Blick-N-Blick and get those filled.  I have four that need checked.  Then I'll come back home, put those away, and head to the eye appointment in Milan.  After that, I'm going to head to the Rock Island County Historical Society for some research time.  Yesterday while the juniors where taking their science test, I spent some time researching my latest interest - Loud Thunder.  I got a membership to the Rock Island County Genealogical Society, which is part of the Rock Island County Historical Society.  That membership got me access to a bunch of area newspapers that have been digitized for research purposes.  I found a lot of answers to questions I've had in mind, which of course led to other questions.

After the RI County Historical Society, it's more softball - this time in Annawan, which we just had last night.

Meanwhile at school today...I hope there is a whole lot of work completed by the students on their projects because not much has gotten down by many of them since I pushed out the assignment last week.

Tuesday, April 18

6:15 a.m. - Yesterday went fine...school went okay; I fear that students don't work hard enough when they get the opportunity, but that's something I fear often.  We didn't have a softball game yesterday, even though Rockridge did.  I'm all for getting in games when the weather isn't great, but yesterday was brutal - yes there was sun...but cold and wind gusts of 40 mph?  That's not something to be playing in.  That's just going to get someone sick or injured or both.  I'm glad my game was canceled.  I did end up using the time to get the sleeper couch put back together.  It' looks horrible, but I learned something.  Now I know how the furniture piece comes apart to get rid of it - whenever I can afford to get something else.  I suppose I did accomplish the attempt of peeling away all of the old flaky covering that was coming off.  I don't imagine my "fix" will last very long before it starts peeling off as well.

Today looks like better weather....not as cold, definitely not as windy.  So we'll get in a full day of school - hopefully the students will work harder.  And then we'll get in some softball in United.  I haven't been there in awhile.

Tomorrow, I'm skipping out of school and going to an appointment for my eyes.  I'm not crazy about this, but I'm needing a check-up.  I've got some things planned around the appointment that will be useful.  I think I'll head to Aledo in the morning and get my LP tanks filled for the camper.  Then after the appointment I think I'm going to head to the Rock Island County Historical Society and do some research into Loud Thunder.  I'm curious about some things, and I haven't been able to find answers over the internet.

Monday, April 17

5:55 a.m.  - The weather is just awful.  The winds continue to roar, and the temps are very cold, and I just want it to stop.  Winter was supposed to be behind us.

Yesterday afternoon/evening, I set out to try to work on the camper couch/sleeper.  I got it out into the middle of the camper and got it apart.  I attempted to scratch the bad fake leather covering off wherever I could, and I even started applying new covering to one section of the sofa.  I don't think the simple fix is going to be permanent...I'm not sure it will last very long at all, but the $60 for the covering and a little time on my part is worth buying something new for over $1,000.  If it doesn't work, I'm just out a little money and a little time.

Today, I'm not sure about anything.  I'm not sure how the school atmosphere is going to be.  I'm not sure if there will be softball...if this weather lingers, I certainly hope not.  So it's possible I may be out working on that sofa couch again this afternoon.  If I'm not umpiring this afternoon, I'd like to get that project done, the couch put back together and anchored in place, the floor cleaned up, and all back to normal to see how the little DIY project works out.

Sunday, April 16

6:32 a.m. - I spent a lot of money yesterday.  It was all stuff I needed, but it was still a lot.  I'm going to have to watch my pennies for awhile, and do get some umpiring in to catch back up.  Yesterday was a beautiful day, and I did get a lot done.  I went for about an hour hike to start the day at Black Hawk State Park.  Then it was off to the pool place (the first of two trips).  Then it was off to Farm-n-Fleet, which is a place I can spend a lot of money quickly.  Then I made a couple more stops to pick up a couple of odds-and-ends.  After getting back home, I was able to get the first cleaning of the pool completed.  I then got the mowing done.  We grilled some pork chops on the grill for supper and the Harrison grandchildren arrived for an overnight visit.  Needless to say the rest of the night was spent with the kids.  Luke let me sleep pretty well last night, so that was good.

The weather?  Well, yesterday was 80 and sunny....this morning it's cold, rainy, and windy.  In fact the forecast has a freaking freeze watch.  What the heck?

Today, then, will not be an outdoors day.  Today will be indoors...maybe a strength training work out sometime.  Also, I might use this opportunity to work on that couch in the camper.  I know one thing...I'm going to avoid shopping.

9:58 update - I got in a workout.  I think I might head to my parents next to pay a visit.  And then when I come home, I think I'll work in the camper.

Saturday, April 15

6:10 a.m. - Yesterday was a disturbing day.  One of our senior boys was shot and killed in his home in what police are calling a "confrontation".  I had the boy as a student in my classroom last year...I'm worried about who and what he got himself into or friends with that could lead to something like this.  And I'm worried about other students in our building that may be are in a similar situation.  Despite the event, we got through the school day.  After getting home I worked with the camper a little and then tried to work on the pool.  The pool work didn't get very far, so Amber and I went to the casino and played some slots.

Today I need to get work on the pool completed before the rains arrive tonight.  I'd like to get a hike in somewhere too.  And I need to run to the pool place and get a replacement vacuum head that broke yesterday.

Friday, April 14

6:01 a.m. - Yesterday was a "normal day"...good day at school, good day of umpiring, a little television, and a good night's sleep.  The weather yesterday was also great again.  Today?  So far I don't have any softball....that may change.  If I don't have any softball, I'll come home and work on the pool.

Saturday's weather is looking good, but Saturday night brings storms and Sunday brings the possibility of snow...geez.

Thursday, April 13

6:02 a.m. - Yesterday's boring S.A.T. went as planned - boring but completed.  I had three students in my section that pretty much tanked the experience.  I just perform my role and try to be upbeat the entire time.  What a student does with his experience is out of my control; I just wish my performance as a teacher wasn't judged on students who don't give an effort.   Then it was off to softball, which featured more beautiful weather.  If umpiring softball in Illinois always featured weather like we are having this week, umpiring softball wouldn't be so bad.

Today I have lesson plans completed.  We'll complete a journal write and share, which we haven't done for over a month.  And then we'll get some feedback on yesterday's S.A.T. experience.  And then we'll look at the project we will complete from all the training path presenters.  The day should be busy.  After that, I'll take a little drive to Monmouth-Roseville for some more umpiring.  I do get to see Erie-Prophetstown for the first time this season.

Wednesday, April 12 - The Worst Day of the School Year for Me

6:04 a.m. - Got through the school day, tried to give last minute advice for the S.A.T., most students didn't care, umpired some softball in unusually warm temperatures, picked up a Jimmy John's sandwich on the way home, watched some TV briefly, went to bed.  Yesterday wasn't really a "highlight day".

Today is the dreaded S.A.T. day.  From the beginning of the school day until about 1 p.m., I'm pretty much bored out of my mind.  I'll do a few things from 1 p.m. - 3:12 p.m., and then I'll head to Mercer County for more softball.  I think we only have one game today, so maybe I'll arrive home a little earlier and work on the pool cleaning project.

Tuesday, April 11 - Happy Birthday Cole

6:04 a.m. - Yesterday made my body hurt.  A little of it was self-inflicted, but I did enjoy a morning hike at Loud Thunder before packing up and getting the Eagle home.  After arrival and emptying it out, I worked on mowing the yard.  And then the miracle of the day was getting the cover off of the pool and opening the pool up.  This was not something I looked forward too.   In the process, I also swept out the floor in the shed.  The pool isn't completely ready to go...still have a couple of things to do before it's "official, but I was tired last night.

Today's big news is that today is Cole's birthday I wish he was here to celebrate.  He's still living live in California, so I won't be able to see him in person.

At school today is sort of the calm before the dreaded storm.  The S.A.T. is on Wednesday, and I know students have not practiced as much as they should have.  Our scores will improve over last year's scores, but they won't be what they should have.  Today students will be very groggy, and I'm not anticipating doing a whole lot.  We'll get in a journal write and review the procedures for tomorrow and call it a day.

The camping trip this weekend really was nice for me.  It would have been great if Amber could have been there more, but the weekend was successful in opening the camper up, making sure it was all working properly, and addressing a few small things.
