Wednesday, March 1

5:49 a.m. - I slept better last night, and I was able to get a walk in last night too - just downstairs on the treadmill, but it was at least something.  This morning I also received my payments for working the IHSA postseason, so I made that transfer from my ArbiterPay account over into my banking account.  After school Brinley arrived, and then Darren and the other two Harrison children arrived too.  They stayed long enough for us to play a little hide-and-seek and some of the Disney card game.  Along with Brinley also arrived the granddogs Sophie and Sailor, but they left later in the evening.  So last night it was just Amber and me in the house...definitely a little quieter than recent nights.

Today will be a free read Wednesday and a day to start scoring essays.  One thing I really like to do; the other is just part of the job - not much fun but needs to be done.  The boys basketball team plays at Orion tonight, but I doubt that I will go.  Maybe I'll just listen to it on the radio.

Weather forecast is calling for snow on Friday...I could use another snow day and make it a three-day weekend.

Tuesday, February 28

5:42 a.m. - Yesterday wasn't exactly great, but it was survivable.  Many students didn't utilize time in class very well to work on their essays.   Two students complained that I documented their lack of progress in private comments of the doc, even though the documentation was accurate.  Today will be the last day of class time to work on the essays.  For many students, they will just be getting a start.  It's part of the battle called secondary education.

Shawn called yesterday afternoon to see if I wanted to go to the girls basketball tournament on Saturday.  If he's willing to drive and Amber doesn't have anything on our schedule, I hope to go.  It will be bittersweet, as it will be tough to watch the officials that are there.  I haven't been to the girls finals for many years, though, so it will be nice to go.

I slept a little better last night...didn't seem to have nightmares like the night before.  I did get my schedule for softball included below.  Softball season looks pretty busy.   More importantly are the blocked weekends in the schedule.  I'm hoping to get the camper out a lot and enjoy the simpler, quieter life of camping weekends.

Monday, February 28

5:49 a.m. - Yesterday I got some little things done, including paying the beginning of the month bills and getting them in the mail.  The rest of the day and the evening was with the Southwell grandchildren, while their mom and dad are gone.  We also had granddogs for most of the day as well.  I watched some basketball on the television - I enjoyed watching Bradley more than I enjoyed watching Illinois.  I also watched my game from the regional championship.  I'm too big and too slow.  I've got to work on losing weight.

I didn't sleep well last night...too much waking up...too many nightmares.

Today is a "rain day", and I think it's the official start to softball season, as teams can begin to officially practice.  We are going to work on essays at school; I'm not sure what is happening this evening.  I think we will have grandchildren again.

Sunday, February 26

8:03 a.m. - There are no more basketball dates under my to-do list.  That's a wrap.  And the 22-23 season went out with a bang.  It was awesome to work the Fulton Boys 1A Regional Championship.  Fulton had a a come-from-behind thrilling win, and the gym was pandemonium.  The crew worked well, the hospitality was great, and the end of the season proved to be a great one.

In fact, earlier in the day, we had three fresh/soph games - one a buzzer beater, one a double-overtime game, and one a running clock.  Those were at Wethersfield in the morning...then I drove to Fulton and took a little nap before the varsity regional game.

Tucker and Rosie are here.  The granddogs are here.  It looks to be a nice day, but I'm tired.  I'm not sure what will happen today.  It would be nice to just get out and walk and soak up a little sunshine.  I do have some things on the to-do list I would also like to accomplish.

Saturday, February 25

6:12 a.m. - The Rockets won last night.  They execute well, take shots that are their kind of shots, and eventually take advantage of their opponents' inability to execute.  And they have enough different pieces t be able to compete in almost any situation.  I don't know if they can get past Princeton, but Princeton will have to earn a win.

Yesterday at school was fine...as expected I tried to get the students going on their essays.  And as expected, they weren't productive.   Then after school Amber and I went to the Mexican restaurant here in town for supper, and then we went to the game.  The Harrisons came to the game, so that was a bit of an adventure.

Today is in all likelihood my last basketball games of the season.  I have three fresh-soph games this morning and then the one game in Fulton.  This didn't work out well because Shawn, Marcus, and I were supposed to work these three games in the morning and then have some food and beverage on the way home.  Now I have to drive separately.  Plus, I'm going to have a little downtime, so I'm going to have to find a place to take a little nap.  I'm not real excited about four games today....I'm guessing I will be taking some Tylenol.

Friday, February 24

6:27 a.m. - Yesterday's school day was busy.  Today shouldn't be as busy, as part of yesterday was getting started on our next activity, which should be our last SAT style essay assignment.  Last night was good...getting to ride to Fulton with Shawn and Randy, and then having a good crew to work with in a regional game between two teams I hadn't had all year long.

Tonight so far, I'm open, so I'm not sure if Amber and I are doing anything or not.  Maybe we are going to the Rockridge game?

Thursday, February 23

6:11 a.m. - Yesterday went fine...because my game at Fulton was postponed, I was able to go up to the high school and watch Rockridge play Monmouth-Roseville and Sherrard play Knoxville.  I also had a chance to talk to my officiating co-workers who were working the game.  The games weren't the best, which made the officials' jobs a little harder.

My schedule for the season is dwindling.  Where there was once many dates, now there are three.  I'm still bummed about not getting a full girls sectional and not getting a boys sectional, but I've expressed my opinions to the powers-that-be, I've worked hard, and now I just need to finish strong and look towards a couple of weeks off before softball season.

Today, we need to get an assignment corrected that I posted last Friday, and then we need to get in another writing assignment.  A writing assignment will make the students very happy!  Tonight, we will finally get to Fulton.  Shawn is driving, and we have to pick up Randy, as he was assigned the game....not sure why.  I had some extra time yesterday, so I added up the number of basketball games I worked this season, beginning on November 1 and ending this coming Saturday - 152 games. That's a lot of officiating.

Wednesday, February 22

6:11 a.m. - Yesterday was a mess at school.  The biggest disappointment was the microphone malfunction on the video camera.  That little NEW camera has caused me a lot of difficulty.  I'm going to have to figure something out.

I sent off an irritated email to the IHSA girls basketball director, and I may end up regretting that.  Then again, I don't think so.

I passed my softball umpiring test; having the answers always helps.

Last night's game at Peoria Richwoods was good.  I had two great partners and one team was much better than the other - makes for a pretty easy evening.  My girls basketball season is now over.  Tonight I was supposed to go to Fulton, but school is already canceled for them due to freezing rain.  I'm not sure what's going to happen, but I'm guessing tonight's games will just get moved to tomorrow.

I heard from a parent last night in an email...she wasn't happy.  I guess she just needed to express how she was irritated that her son's partner didn't do any work.  I responded in an email this morning expressing how I tried to encourage students to choose wisely when selecting a partner or forming a group.

Things to do for school

Tuesday, February 21

6:02 a.m. - Yesterday was not the day off from school I had hoped to enjoy.  We had grandchildren and grand dogs all day long.  The kids were great; the dogs were a handful.  Late last night I also received information that told me I didn't get a boys basketball sectional assignment, which furthered my disappointment and frustration with the IHSA this basketball season.  Plus, I found out who was selected to work the state finals.  Needless to say, I didn't sleep well.  I really know I should be happy for others, but I find myself battling my mind to avoid being bitter as hell.  I don't think I could have worked any harder this past basketball season to be as good as I could possibly be and help with the guys I work with.  To have all of that effort seemingly go unnoticed for postseason assignments has caused me to rethink some things.

Today could be a real mess at school.  I've been off since last Thursday.  I'm going to have to get back in the groove somehow.  Then tonight I have to go to Peoria Richwoods.  One thing I can say...this is the last week of basketball officiating for me.  I'm just going to try to set the bitterness aside and try to enjoy the last week of games.

Monday, February 20 - Happy Presidents' Day!

6:32 a.m - Yesterday was a weird day, but I accomplished everything I had set out to do.  Included in that list was getting some flowers to Brinley since she fractured her arm and is going to the doctor today - likely to get a cast on her arm.  Apparently she fell and landed awkwardly on her arm.  That means I'm up early now because Brooklyn and Luke will be coming over early this morning so Brinley can go into ORA for her appointment.

Today is going to be weird again...not sure of what the day will be.  I know I don't have a game tonight, so I won't be doing any officiating.  I know I will be playing with Luke and Brooklyn, but that's about all I know.

Sunday, February 19

8:41 a.m. - I made it to Sunday.  Yesterday's softball clinic in Macomb was as expected - long and partially informational.  And then yesterday's boys regional game at Riverdale was as expected - awkward and uncomfortable.  The good team didn't play well; the bad team played their asses off.  The good team's coach waited until 1:32 left in the game to empty his bench; the bad team's coach didn't have anyone on his bench to empty.  I finally made it home, ate too much food, and then finally had a decent night's sleep.

Today....I know I need to get my officiating clothes washed and back in the car.  I'm also heading to my parents for Sunday dinner and to watch the Daytona 500 with my dad for a bit.

Other than that, I'd like to get in a long walk, and I'd like to get in a stretch.  I wouldn't mind going to church either.  A trip to the casino is also a possibility.  How to fit all of this in with Amber working all day today at Snowstar?  Hmmmm.....

Saturday, February 18

6:15 a.m. - Yesterday was great - right up until my 3A girls regional championship game...that was a shit show.  Two teams that didn't care for each other, ugly basketball, partners that weren't really ready for a game like that - total shit show.  The game ended with a technical foul issued by me at a Rock Island girl for shoving a Galesburg girl.  It was deserved, but I still hated to do it.

The rest of the day - golden.  Got my teeth cleaned, got the HHR oil change, got my prescription, won a little money at the casino, took a nap, did a few household things...GOLDEN.

Today...crap.  I have to drive this morning to Macomb to a damn softball clinic.  Then I have to be to Riverdale by 3 p.m. to work a boys regional play in game.  The whole time I'm going to be thinking about last night's game and my bitterness over not getting a full girls sectional.  Plus I just know boys assignments are going to come out, and I'm not going to get a sectional game there either.  That's going to make me more irritated.  I just have to get over the bitterness of getting left out while others get in - others I know I'm as good as if not better than.

I'd like the day to be over, to be in my recliner, to be enjoying a beverage.  For now....time to get going.

Friday, February 17

6:34 a.m. - Yesterday was a weird day, even for a snow day. We had Tucker and Rosie until about 1 p.m., so Tucker and I went up to school to set out sub info and for me to try to take the softball exam (I missed too many, so I'll retake it next week.)  He got to play on the markerboard, and Amber got a break.  There really wasn't too much snow until the afternoon, and my game at Ottawa was still on.  Later in the day, about 2:30, the game was cancelled, so I went out to shovel the driveway.  Little did I know that more snow would arrive in the evening, so the driveway needs cleared again, but I'm not sure I'll get to it before I leave for my dentist appointment.  The evening was pretty quiet...the first quiet evening absent of granddogs or grandchildren for a few days.  I watched some television and went to bed...pretty boring.

Now I'm going to get dressed and get ready to go to the dentist.  I had hoped to perhaps go get a cup of coffee or breakfast with Chase, but I haven't been able to finalize anything yet.  I still have that game at Dixon tonight, which is going to be chaotic.  Rock Island vs. Galesburg won't be fun.

Thursday, February 16 - SNOW DAY!

6:41 a.m. - It's not snowing yet, but school has been cancelled.  We have grandchildren; I'm scheduled to work in Ottawa tonight...could be an interesting day.  I did sleep better last night.  Maybe I'll work on that softball exam today if I have a chance.  I'll need to get to the school sometime to set out my sub plans.

Wednesday, February 15

5:53 a.m. - Marcus got an assignment at the United 1A Boys Regional!  He sent a message yesterday informing me of this, and I'm excited for him.  The rest of the day was definitely strange.  We had a half-day of school, and students had varying levels of productivity.  Then our in-service was a series of games and challenges that was supposed to be fun for staff.  Finally, my regional game last night was a handful.  So in a nutshell, yesterday was challenging.  In the midst of all that in the afternoon, I received a message from the IHSA asking if I could go to Ottawa tomorrow night for another girls regional game.  Of course I will go, but the weather forecast doesn't look very good.

Today is a Wednesday...should be a quiet day in class.  Tonight I do not have a game, but I think Tucker and Rosie are spending the night.  And sometime tonight the snowstorm is supposed to start.

Tuesday, February 14 - Happy Valentine's Day!

6:23 a.m. - No games yesterday, so Amber and I went our for some supper and gambling at Bally's to celebrate Valentine's Day since I won't be home tonight.  I'm headed to Dixon for a 3A Regional Girls game.  I'll be riding up with my partners Braeden Peters and Dave VanNest...both are good guys and good officials, so it will be nice.  I'm a little concerned about Friday, as the third partner scheduled with Dave and I hasn't responded to my email, and I just found out yesterday that I'm the "R" for that game.  He's a much more experienced official, so I wonder if he's not a very good official.

Today is a half day, which means we have a half day of inservice.  I loathe inservice days.  My goal is to just survive.  Maybe I can squeeze a nap in sometime somehow.  I slept a little better last night, but I'm still not sleeping very well.

I'd really like to get a boys sectional game.  Those assignments should come out later this week.  I don't think I will get a sectional game, but I would really like one.

Believe it or not, softball is starting up.  The rules video and testing opens up today.  I think my first game is scheduled for March 13.

Yesterday at school I conferenced with the groups of students making presentations on Thursday.  Many of them are going to try to perform...many will not be successful.

Monday, February 13

6:02 a.m. -  Tucker and Rosie spent the night last night, and I didn't sleep very well.  The restless night wasn't because of them - I just ate too much snack food yesterday at Rhonda's and Jack's while watching the Super Bowl.   The game was a good one - the Eagle lost a close game to the Chiefs.  Marcus wasn't happy about a call that was made late in the game...it was a bit of a "cheap call", but the Chiefs were the better team in the second half.

Today is "in the air" at school and after school.  And the weather is going to be weird this week - beautiful and 50 degrees today, rain tomorrow and dropping temperatures toward the end of the week, snow on Thursday, and then back to mild temperatures this week.  Spring must be getting closer and closer.

Sunday, February 12 - Super Bowl

7:13 a.m - Yesterday finished off a full 12-game week.  The game at Sterling was a workout.  I think the score ended up 83-73, and keeping up with the action was tough.  The game in the evening at Wethersfield wasn't as challenging, but the higher seed almost got upset, so it was a different kind of challenge.  Supper at La Gondola was awesome after a day like that.

Now we have grandchildren this morning - Tucker and Rosie.  And we are headed to Jack and Rhonda's sometime today for the Super Bowl.

I didn't sleep very well last night, so maybe I can squeeze a nap in sometime today.

Saturday, February 11

7:49 a.m. - Last night was a challenging night to officiate.  F/S game was lopsided, so players got irritated.  Varsity game was highly competitive...we had a technical foul in the first half and an intentional foul in the second half...on the same player.  We didn't handle the first situation correctly, but it was good enough.  Yesterday at school was fine.

I didn't get a full sectional for girls.  That bums me out.  I'm really going to get bummed out when I see who did.  I just don't get the IHSA and how assignments are completed.  Somehow, some way I always have to be be later in line.  I hope I live long enough to get a deeper assignment in the postseason.  I know I do a good job...I have to try to be satisfied with that and happy for my peers that are assigned.  It's really hard not to be bitter and jealous, but I'll try.

Today is going to be another long day in the last long days of a long week.  We are at Sterling in the afternoon.  We are at Wethersfield in the eventing.  I'm ready for Super Bowl relaxation and fun with family and friends tomorrow.

Friday, February 10

from Rick Hartzell's Book - Whistle In A Haystack

"Why do people go into athletics as a career?  Why in the world do they officiate gams?  I think the answers are because those gyms and fields are where they are most comfortable in life.  I know with me that's the case.  That's where you belong.  That is where you have learned life's best lessons and where you have enjoyed some of life's greatest moments.  So, when you cannot play anymore, or when you have had enough of coaching, then administration or officiating are the ways you can stay in the arena, stay involved, give back, be comfortable, and still be a part of what is deeply embedded in your soul - the need to compete and chase the dream of doing better, giving your best and working so hard and then collapsing at the end of the day knowing that you gave your all in an area that you love and that after you rest a little you will be ready to do it again tomorrow.  The competition drives us all who are involved in athletics.  Not just the competition to win or to prove that you are the best, but the competition that allows you to be the best you can possibly become and then see how that stacks up against all the others.  It's the people and the journey, not the winning that keeps us working the athletics arena."

6:31 a.m. - I woke up a little late this morning...no worries.  Last night's games went fine...yesterday at school went fine...pretty routine.  IT'S FRIDAY...it's been a long but fast week.  Yesterday, Marcus got a girls regional assignment...THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY.  Plus my friend Braedon Peters also got a regional...ALSO MAKES ME HAPPY.  And the good news is that we can all go together up to Dixon next Tuesday!  I think I'm going to try to coordinate Amber's van for us all to ride up together.

Today I would just really like to get done fast and get to the weekend.  We go to West Central tonight...the games will be sloppy, messy, and the fans will be ridiculous.  They are tired of seeing their teams lose, and they will all think this will be a chance to win, and everything and anything that goes wrong will be the fault of the officials.  Bring it on...after yesterday's news for Marcus and Braeden, I have the energy to withstand the barrage.

Thursday, February 9

8:41 a.m. - I thought I completed this entry this morning...maybe I didn't hit update.  I'll make it fast.  I talked with Carmen last night - she and Tyler are doing well.  I'm getting the hint that maybe they are trying for a baby, so I'll have to keep tabs on that.  The games in Abingdon were fine - long drive, not very good basketball, but the paycheck was nice.

Today should be pretty simple at school.  It's snowing now, and I think if the snow would have started a couple hours earlier we may have seen a delay or even a snow day.  Tonight we are headed to Monmouth-Roseville.  The game should be a little better than last night.  We are half way through the week!

Wednesday, February 8

6:00 a.m. - Last night was our last scheduled night in Iowa.  Unless there is some type of need to fill in for something else, the Iowa uniform can be put away.  I'm ready.  The Iowa nights are longer and don't feature as much pay.  Plus, the fans are more offensive.  The basketball is actually better, but that doesn't make up for the other stuff.

I did get to hear from Chase yesterday.  I miss him.  I miss good times with him.  Actually I miss all my kids right now.  The holidays are over; the weather isn't very nice yet; and they are spread out.  Maybe I'll get to see Carmen at the end of the week when we officiate at West Central.

The Super Bowl is this weekend...I'll try to look forward to that.  Also, there is some weather moving in tomorrow morning, but it appears that it won't be enough to affect school.  I could use a snow day right now, but if the forecast this morning is correct, it won't happen.

I have a new book I'm reading that Shawn loaned to me.  It's really good, but it's also really positive...too positive.  I don't yet hear or sense any regrets, which intrigues me.  I have a lot of regrets.  I wonder if the regrets grow as we grow older.  If a person puts time into something, then something else doesn't get that time, right?  I know the goal is to achieve a healthy balance, and that's great.  But a balance means there are times that you give something up in order to maintain a balance.  I hope in the book I'm reading there will also be some realistic discussion of the sacrifice that is made when anyone is dedicated to something.  Dedication to something means lack of dedication to other things.

Today we will be starting the next activity in the current unit.  It will be a group project...the only group presentation project of the school year for the course.  It will be a hard sell, but it still needs to get done.

Things to do for school
