Monday, August 31

7:06 a.m. - It appears that 20-21 school day launch is a "go".  Or if I've gotten all cleaned up and have a tie on before 7:30 a.m., I have wasted my time and energy.  Today will be interesting - teaching in a pandemic.  I fear that I'm going to spend more time dealing with COVID-19 procedures and precautions than spending time with students, which is troubling, but it is what it is.

3:47 p.m. - We survived!  We forgot to give the complimentary mask out to first period, and we had a little recording trouble with 2nd and 7th period, but I think those things can be worked out.  We won't really know how well or poorly things are going for a few days when we start to get feedback from students and parents.  I know how chaotic today was for me; I'm guessing that it was all a bit overwhelming for students as well.  They haven't sat in a classroom since last March, so imagine just trying to stay focused until 12:37 was a big challenge.  So how much are we accomplishing?  Well, it's hard to tell, but dealing with COVID is definitely time consuming.

Sunday, August 30

6:57 a.m.  - Yesterday was productive.  I got the yard mowed, and I wacked the weeds in the ditch.  I didn't get the bushes trimmed, which may be an effort today, but I'm also planning on heading to mom and dad's to help them with some projects.  It will be a good day to accomplish that, since the weather is supposed to stay cool.

9:42 p.m. - Yard improvement efforts were completed today.  I went for a hike at Loud Thunder and reserved a site at Deer Haven Campground for this weekend.  Then I went to my mom's and we road horses for a bit.  I'm tired, but I'm ready to get this darn school year started and underway.  In some ways, I think tomorrow will be the start of school that will never completely return to how it was before last March.  And to be honest, I don't think we will be in-person instruction for very long.  My prediction is that we won't make it through September; hopefully, I'm wrong.  Let's do this.

Saturday, August 29

8:04 a.m. - Today is going to be good!  I got some bills written out today and will throw them in the mail.  I think Amber and I are going to the farmer's market in Davenport, and then I'm going to enjoy the cooler temps and work on the yard.  Tevin Bizarri is getting married later on today through Facebook live, so I think I will grab a beverage and then watch the ceremony to help join in.  Tomorrow, I think I will get to a church service and then try to join mom with a little horseback ride just around their farm.  Let's hope this weekend is a smooth one.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (8/29)

6 months into this pandemic...hard to believe it's been that long.  Rate of deaths is definitely slowing, but positive cases are increasing at a faster rate.  Perhaps more healthy people are contracting the disease and beating it; perhaps improved treatment strategies are helping patients.  My guess is that it's probably a combination of those two reasons.  I don't think it's safe to say, though, that it's subsiding.  And I don't think it's a good thing seeing that cold and flu season will be arriving when the weather gets colder in October.

Thursday, August 27th

5:59 a.m.  Hurricane Laura hit Louisiana overnight, and it still is moving north as a hurricane.  I'm glad I wasn't in its path, because it appeared very impressive.  Today is yet another day of "preparation" for next Monday, but honestly I'm running out of things to do to get ready.  Yesterday, Mrs. Kline, Mrs. Mueller, and Mrs. Macke helped me complete a curricular display, which was a big help.  It's the best one that I know has ever been crafted from what was supposed to be my creation.  I'm not a real creative person, so their help was great.  I didn't exercise yesterday, so my weight creeped up a little, but that's okay.  I did stay in my eating window, which lately seems to be getting away from me.  I need to draw that mental toughness back in my life, or I will gain the weight I've been able to keep off.  I have to establish a better routine in the morning too - maybe an earlier routine is more specific.  I must admit that an ability to start a morning whenever desired since pretty much last March has been nice, but I need to start getting myself up earlier so I can get some exercise in.

5:35 p.m. - Today went by fast, and I feel a few steps closer to being more prepared for the school year.  After school, I just sat in the pool with my mom and we discussed all the world problems.  Those are quiet times that won't shatter the world with excitement, but my mom is one of the people in my life that has more importance than many other things.  She is an amazing person with a will of still and heart of gold.  I don't agree with her about everything, but there aren't many other people on this planet I respect as much as her.  So I can stop the world for a couple of hours and spend time chatting with mom - anytime and anywhere.  Maybe tonight I'll run down have have Amber whip up a shake at Shivers and throw some money at a slot machine.  Then I can try to tackle a Friday tomorrow.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (8/26)

Yesterday, Illinois increase the use of masks to include requiring people to wear masks inside.  I think before, individual businesses had the choice of the mask requirement.  This seems to be yet another sign that the spread of the virus is not decreasing, and I thought that this was the time of the year that we had hoped to get the spread under control.  I wish there was a way to extend August/September weather another few months, but maybe that wouldn't make a difference anyway.

Tuesday, August 25

6:25 a.m. - Today is another weird institute day - number five and counting.  Yesterday, I accomplished some things, and also got more confused about some things.  That seems to be how things operate in this weird time...find some answers, get some things done, and get confused about other things.  Today features another staff meeting, which normally means things will get more confusing again.  At least the staff meeting is in the morning, so I have the rest of the day to try to sort through the confusion.

1:33 p.m. - We had our staff meeting today, and surprisingly I wasn't as irritated from information in the meeting that I had feared.  There are some changes, but that seems to be a daily occurrence that I'm getting used to receiving.  Mrs. Mitola and I worked a lot on "presentation" of lessons and instruction in the classroom, and part of that was working with the camera from the computer to figure out how to best live stream and record classroom sessions.  While I know there is going to be a learning curve to instruction while live-streaming and recording, I feel like I'm less irritated and confused about my direction than I was yesterday.  I'm a classroom teacher; I'm not an online teacher.  Even if we go remote, I will be required to work from school in my classroom.  The only way that I would work from home would be if the state (or country) went under another stay-at-home order.  So rather than attempting to transform my course into an online course; I'm going to transform my classroom instruction into in-person and live-streaming and recorded sessions.  I hope I'm going the right direction, and I'm able to make it all work.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (8/25)

Illinois seems to be keeping hospitalizations down, which is good news.  There was a story on the news this morning about the enhanced importance of getting a flu shot, which I'm normally not all that concerned about.  I've gotten them in the past but not always.  I think this year I will get another one in an attempt to try to stay a little healthier for the students and for my family.  I know the flu vaccine isn't always real effective, but my insurance pays for it, so why not go ahead and get it and hope it helps my body fight off the upcoming cold and flu season a little better.

Monday, August 24th - Back To School - Again - Sort Of

6:33 a.m. - This week is going to be a long one.  Temps are going to be in the 90's, and if three days of in-service days wasn't enough, now we have five longer days of in-service this week.  BUT....taking the camper out this past weekend has replenished my energy and patience reserves, so "hi-ho, hi-ho; it's off to work we go!" I think I'm going to make a list of items to accomplish on the chalkboard and just try to keep myself busy.   I foresee trying to create a lot of video tutorials that we can then gather into a digital resource library for students to use.  I'm not sure how much those videos will get used, but the effort will at least help me keep my sanity through this week.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (8/24)

Colleges and universities across the country seem to be surprised that their students on campus are not practicing social distancing requirements.  They are congregating in large groups and doing some partying...what?  Really?  So many of those institutions are now going to all remote/online instruction.

Sunday, August 23

Something is very fishy with Blogger. I'm not sure what is happening. I thought maybe it was a glitch, and everything appears to be correct when I preview, but the design is all weird and looks like nothing but codes.

9:39 --- Wait, I figured it out, I was in HTML mode instead of compose mode...I didn't realize that was a possibility, but apparently it is.

So this past weekend, we went camping at West Lake Park - specifically Summit Campground.  We had Brooklyn with us two of the three days; maybe I can talk about that in an upcoming post, because I'm really tired.  When we got the trailer home today, I spent the rest of the day attempting to add dirt to the pad next to the house to improve level of the pad and hopefully keep any/all underground lines safer.  For now, I'm going to bed.

Tuesday, August 18

7:26 a.m. - Yup, yesterday was an interesting day.  Today was suppose to be the first day of classes at school, but the schools are closed.  I think it's safe to say there has been a small outbreak of cases among staff members in the district, and now there is a special BOE meeting tonight to determine the path forward.  My hope is that teachers will return to the buildings tomorrow, and students and staff will begin remote learning as soon as possible.  My fear is that the BOE will prefer to postpone the start of school so the school year will start with hybrid in-person instruction.  I have learned a couple of things - I wasn't aware that in order to use remote learning, the BOE would have to authorize it; I wasn't aware that the previous e-learning/remote learning plan that was created last Spring isn't really the final product that the state wants.  I've also come to realize that as far as "preparedness" to educate the students, we really have spend the last three institute days preparing for the "hybrid kids" and not really preparing for the "remote kids".  I haven't really turned my attention too far into transforming my course into an online course that can be utilized by remote learners.  I wonder how many other teachers are ahead of me in this respect.  IF there are continued "in-service" days ahead, I think I'm going to turn my attention in that direction.

For today, I'm going to work some association paperwork junk, and then I'm going to put a little time into the trailer pad next to the house.  Right now, it's not much of a pad, it's just dirt that seems to be sinking, and I'm worried about the gas and electric lines that I think are running underneath it.  I have a plan, but it's going to take a little execution.  I also want to work on campgrounds to explore.  I think this weekend will be a good get-a-way weekend.

Sunday, August 16

4:07 a.m. - Woke up at my usual 3:00-3:30 a.m., and I couldn't go back to sleep.  Normally, I can go back to sleep, but not today - I guess my brain was just working too much.  I notice too that after umpiring, or doing anything at length that is physical, it's like my body is running on overdrive or something.  So I just decided to get up and "crunch numbers" and write in this blog.  For me crunching numbers is looking at my spreadsheet of my financial picture and updating numbers and hopefully feeling comfortable about where I'm sitting.  I made two good decisions this past summer - working two months at FedEx Ground and starting back up working for USSSA softball umpiring.  Those two efforts have allowed me to make a little over $3,000.  In the grand scheme of financing over a year, that's a pretty low percentage, but I normally make more than that over a summer, and I took a big hit in the spring without any umpiring dates.  Tomorrow, IESA (junior high) softball starts, so that will bring in a little money, and USSSA softball will take a couple weeks off, but it will start back up for "fall ball" starting Labor Day weekend.  By that time, too, I'll be working a little volleyball in Iowa.  If I can just work at least a couple of days a week at umpiring or officiating, that will go a long way in helping my financial picture stay healthy.

I need to mow the yard, fill up the chlorinator, and if all goes well, perhaps work on the weeds in the swamp.  I would like to get some new blades for the weed wacker, though - maybe a trip to Aledo or Moline would work.  We are also thinking steaks on the grill for supper.  I think I'm going to start a book now, and perhaps that will help me fall back to sleep for a couple of hours before waking up for the day.

10:34 p.m. - And now I can't sleep again!  An email was just sent out to the community stating that our first day of school is now canceled, so the BOE can meet to discuss reopening of school.  The message stated, "this may delay the start of the school year longer."  I've been preparing my brain and course and classroom for the possibility of a sudden switch to full remote learning if there was a COVID outbreak in our community.  And I've been telling everyone that we'd be lucky if we even got to September with the "A/B" day schedule.  My fear now is that the administration and BOE is considering postponing the start of the school year, perhaps until after Labor Day.  I don't know that for sure; it's just a guess.  The reality is that putting off the start of the school year isn't going to do anything but delay what I believe is the inevitable, which is full remote learning/instruction for a long time...likely all of first semester.  The science says a vaccine may be ready by the first of the year; the science says the spread of the virus isn't decreasing; and the politics refuses to scale back social distancing requirements.

This had been a nice day.  I got the yard mowed; I finished wacking the swamp weeds; I helped dad with his generator; we had a nice supper; I took care of the pool; I ran the sprinkler in the front yard; I just purchased kleenex and masks and batteries for my classroom!  Now I'm wired and frustrated, so sleep is not an option.  I'm going to try to read my book; maybe that will help.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (8/16)

Yesterday, Rock Island County cases reported jumped by 20, and the cases seems to be increasing similar to that 10-20 range each day.  Perhaps we are looking at the virus infection rate increasing in our area.  The troubling part about that information is that we will soon be entering the cold and flu season - ugh.

Saturday, August15

7:35 a.m. - After yesterday's institute day, I'm getting a better picture of what I think school is going to look like at least for this first nine weeks under the pandemic return-to-learn guidelines.  Now the challenge is going to be to make past instructional efforts all digital/virtual for students that are not in attendance in a particular day, but also make the class period for students in attendance meaningful and engaging - doable for everyone and engaging for the 7-12 students that may be in class - this is not going to be easy.  There are times that I really want to have all students in class for a particular activity, but I'm going to have to get over that.  For students, this is going to be doable if they keep up with class each day.  I'm going to recommend on their "off-days" that students join the live session during their respective class period.  If that's not doable, then viewing the recorded session is an alternative.  We are going to use a Chromebook on a table towards the front of the room to record the session, which should be out of view of students in the class.
