Monday, September 30

5:47 a.m. - Yesterday was a productive Sunday - trimmed the ditches, cleaned the pool, watched the Bears win as I was napping, and drove to Fort Madison to visit the Hoenigs.  

Today is Monday, but it's pay day, so that's good.  Mondays seem to be challenging at ICE, and after today Mrs. Zampogna is gone for the rest of the week to her daughter's wedding.  I'm going to need some luck to get through the week.  Today I have a JH girls basketball game at Williamsfield, but I get to be with Tony and Jason.  It will be good to see them again.

Sunday, September 29

6:54 a.m. - Yesterday I was able to get the bills paid and mailed out, and I was able to get the yard mowed.  I even snuck in a little nap before Amber and I went to the Old Oaks for a wedding of a child of one of Amber's friends.  The venue was really nice, and the food was great.  We didn't stay long, but Amber was able to see some folks she hadn't seen in awhile.  I watched football when I got home - Illinois lost but was respectable.  Notre Dame won.  Georgia and Alabama was a heck of a game.   The dry weather continues, and the warm temps continue.  I think I'm going to get to cleaning the pool today, and I'm going to do some weed wacking.  Depending on Amber's schedule, I'm going to try to go see Chase and go to Fort Madison too.  The Bears play at noon, but I'm not sure if I want to watch that.

Saturday, September 28

5:54 a.m. - Amber and I went to the casino after school and after picking up pork chops at the Taylor Ridge UMC drive thru fundraiser.  Fortunately, we didn't lose any money at the casino.  We then went and got groceries at Aldi's and HyVee in Rock Island.  After getting home, I went out to ICE and did an inspection of the security lighting that is currently operational around the building.  I discovered that the lighting isn't very operational, so I sent Mr. Willard and Mr. Bush a report.  

All of this occurred after a pretty busy day at ICE.  It was "data day", which apparently means a change of routine for students, so "meltdowns" must occur.  In addition, we had a student abruptly move, so we had to pack up his "stuff" and wish him the best on his way.  We are now down to 107 students.  I also had a couple of meetings to attend - one was a simple domain meeting which I just sit and observe and do nothing.  The other was a little more complicated, but I only needed to offer an introduction and then sit and observe.  There were two new subs in the building that I also checked in with, and one of them I gave a tour since he had never even been to the school before.  

So what is on the schedule for today?  I'd like to mow the grass if the weather will cooperate.  Cleaning the pool would be nice, but I've been trying to accomplish that for a couple of weeks.  I also would like to get some exercise and need to take a couple of things up to the unit office.  Finally, I have some bills to pay and mail out.  And if all that gets accomplished, I'll have more time to do "nothing" or maybe see Caleb, Carmen, and Tyler tomorrow.  Tonight Amber and I have a wedding and reception to attend.

Friday, September 27

5:45 a.m. - It's been another long, long week.  I keep saying that each week, though, so maybe I just need to understand that long weeks are part of life.  Yesterday wasn't as much of a roller coaster at least.  It was nice that Cole visited ICE to check things out, and he even went to our volleyball match at Sherrard last night and watched that.  I do enjoy spending time with him and missing seeing him more.  Well, actually I miss all the kids and wish I could see them more.

Today is Friday.  No officiating today, and I've already had one of my meetings today postponed.  I think Amber is requesting we go to the casino tonight for a date night after we stop by the Taylor Ridge church pork chop supper drive-thru.  I need to get the yard mowed sometime this weekend.  I think I'll be able to relax a little this weekend, but we aren't scheduled to go camping - damn it.

Wednesday, September 25

5:17 a.m. - I think busy days are just what ICE days are going to be, as yesterday was busy, and I seem to document that many of my days now are busy.  Among other things, yesterday there was a little dramatic production called "Land of Smiles" at ICE.  It's just a little skit by a two-person crew that focuses on good dental care.  The kids enjoyed it, the crew was in and out efficiently, and everything went according to schedule and plan.  Then last night Jacqy and I went to Erie for a volleyball match between Erie-Prophetstown and Princeton.  It was the hardest hitting match I had had all season long, and it was a good one.  I'm talking about the varsity match, and it went three sets.  It was good to ride to and from the game with Jacqy and chit-chat and catch up on life.  Last night's game was a regional atmosphere game, and I'm not a regional official, so it was fun to be in the thick of it.

Today will, of course, be busy again.  It's my first "picture day" today, so that will be an experience.  I have a couple of meetings in the building, and then Shawn and I are going to Woodhull for another volleyball match.  Life rolls on...no rest for the wicked!

Tuesday, September 24

4:39 a.m. - Two steps forward and one step back.  That was my day yesterday.  That's not all bad, right?  I got into some classrooms yesterday to conduct some informal observations, and we finally got the front landscaping of the building completed, which looks nice.  I got to Galesburg yesterday afternoon to do my first basketball officiating of the season at Costa Catholic, and I didn't feel very good, but I felt better than I expected.  

Today, we have some sort of performance at school that will be an instructional thing about dental care, so that's something to look forward to.  I have 13 emails waiting for me right now that have the Illinois City Elementary label, which is more information than I probably want to deal with right now, but I can't sleep anyway, so I might as well look over them.  And finally, it's back to volleyball officiating tonight with Jacqy in Erie.  I haven't done any volleyball for awhile, so that ought to be interesting.  Just another day in the life of JBiz.

Monday, September23

5:30 a.m. - After a week off from any officiating, it's back at it.  And tonight I have my first basketball game, which I'm completely out of shape and not prepared for.  It's my own fault; I knew it was coming.  I guess we'll get a chance to see how the old bum knee feels.

Yesterday I could have exercised, but I was a slug again like pretty much most of Saturday.  The Bears were awful, so that was a waste of time.  I did go visit mom and dad in the evening, so that was nice.  I worked a little on the hot tub, but that's still a big question mark of whether to try to look into repairing it or just pitching it.  I'm leaning towards pitching it as of now.  

I've learned that Monday's are always hard at school, so I'll need to be ready to go this morning.

6:13 a.m. - Mother Nature made some decisions for me yesterday.  Amber and I went to watch some flag football and flag football cheerleading in Aledo, and that show got cut short due to weather.  That weather continued through our arrival home, so no lawn mowing or pool cleaning was going to get done.  I decided to go knock out a teacher evaluation, and I had to go to the ICE office to get that done.  I got home in time to watch some football, and I pretty much was a slug the rest of the day.  The Harrison grandchildren arrived around 5 p.m., so we played some Old Maid, and eventually they went to bed and I went to bed falling to sleep watching football.  

Now everyone is up early because Luke woke up being sick.  Great.  I'm not sure what today is going to bring now.  I'm hearing early reports that Gigi and the girls are going to Sunday school while I stay home with the sick boy.  And the rain continues to fall and is forecast to continue to fall, so I'm not sure if anything will get done outside today either.  The Bears are on at noon; that's the only thing on my schedule.  I probably should get in a little exercise somehow.

7:27 a.m. - It's a Saturday; time to take a breath.  Last week was very busy and hot!  Maybe this coming week will slow down and be a little cooler.  Today I'll be watching some flag football and flag football cheerleaders.  I'm not sure what happens after that.  I'd like to try to avoid mowing the grass, but maybe cleaning the pool would be a good idea.

Friday, September 20

5:32 a.m. - Yesterday was 11:30 dismissal, but it was a long day.  After the half day at school, there was an inservice over LETRS training, which I'm learning is phonics and language arts training.  In education, types of training just recycle and gather new names.  It's not bad training, but it's really nothing new.  I did get a little nap and a little supper before the Homecoming Parade started.  I had a job during the parade, which was to monitor and supervise.  Fortunately, I didn't have to go far, as I was assigned the section of the parade that went by my house.  We had many guests and there was lots of candy to be had.  I wrapped up the day by watching some football and falling into a hard sleep.  

I've got a full-blown cold now, but I'll make it.  I did get better and more sleep last night, so that will help.  We don't have much going for the weekend, so hopefully I'll be able to get over this cold.  It's Friday, and that's always a good thing.

Thursday, September 19

4:08 a.m. - Ya, it's early.  I couldn't go back to sleep, so I figured I might as well just get up.  I did fall asleep early last night, so it's no surprise that I'm waking up early.  Maybe I'll get in a walk this morning.  Yesterday after school I was pretty sleepy, and then the Harrisons arrived, so I played some Old Maid and watched some Gator Boys...you get the picture.  At school, I was able to finish some tasks.

It's now 4:37, and I've been working on school stuff - good stuff, but probably would be better for my health to be sleeping.  

Today is an 11:30 day, and I'm not sure what the day will be like at ICE.  Nobody has really asked, so I'm just going to roll with it.  After bus departure, we are all going to load up and head to the junior high/high school for LETRS training, which is science of reading training, which is phonics training....I think.  I'm not going to be participating in the training, but I am going to be observing and learning.  I'd like to get that other teacher evaluation done, but that might have to wait until the weekend.

It's now 5:23, and I've gotten some other school stuff things done.  I knew my mind was racing and needed to get emptied.  I think I'm ready to start my day now.  It's garbage day, so I have to do that too!

Wednesday, September 18

5:55 a.m. - Yesterday was a day of accomplishments.  I was able to get into another classroom and complete a formal observation of a teacher, and I muddled my way through completing an observation report on Evaluwise, but it's obvious that the process is going to take some practice.  Yesterday, I was also able to get access to MAP scores, and we have some work to do.  Our students are not performing well enough, and we need to get better.  I'm not sure how much analysis of scores has been completed in the past, but we are going to do some now.  Plus, we are going to celebrate success, so I already have the wheels turning on generating some certificates of accomplishment.  There is a job to do here, and we are going to work on it.

Today is Wacky Wednesday, so I'm going to have to figure out something to wear.  I see I have a jury summons for the week of 10-7...great.  Hopefully today will be another day I can make some accomplishments on the to-do list.

Tuesday, September 17

5:30 a.m. - I'm learning that Monday's are challenging in the K,1,2 world.  It's seemingly just hard to slug through a Monday for students after being home for two days of the weekend.  I really wanted to get some things done, but I stayed busy for most of the day on building management things.  Then last night we had a BOE meeting.  There didn't seem to be a lot of items there, so after coming home I watched some Monday Night Football and went to bed.

Maybe I'll get some things done today that I had hoped to get done yesterday.

One thing that I'm discovering is challenging is the apparent distrust between the three main instructional groups in the building - classroom teachers, interventionist, and special education.  Those three groups need to trust and work together, but unfortunately failure is what links the three.  If classroom teachers use a variety of strategies to help students and fail to produce results, then the interventionist kicks in.  If the interventionist use a variety of strategies to continue to help those students, then special education kicks in.  Special education, then, has to make decisions to include the student in as much classroom time as possible while also helping the student progress as far as possible within her/his limitations.  The result is that the three groups tend to question each other.  Why isn't that group doing more?  Is that group really doing more?  Shouldn't that group be doing more faster?  Should that group being doing better?  As principal, then, I get caught in between the groups and their concerns.

Monday, September 16

5:25 a.m. - The weather forecast is not looking all that great for camping this week and weekend, so bringing the camper home from Monmouth rather than taking it straight to Loud Thunder seems to be the wiser of the choices.  Yesterday I did get the yard mowed after unloading the camper, and I even got a couple of other small landscaping projects done before heading to my parents' farm to help them with some hay.  Cole arrived to help me out, but it didn't take long.  We watched a little of the Bears game there, and then I came home and tried to watch the game, but I was pretty tired, so I fell to sleep.  

It's Homecoming Week this week, so I'm guessing things will be a little "energized" in the ICE building today.  We'll have to see how things go.  I have to attend the BOE meeting tonight, as well, so I hope that doesn't take a long time.

Sunday, September 15

11:06 a.m. - While our camping site wasn't the best in the world, our weekend camping experience was nice.  We just stayed at Citizen's Lake Campground in Monmouth because Shawn and Mary were going to spend the weekend there .  We were able to watch Chloe play a match at Monmouth College yesterday, and after that we had a nice supper of pork chops and chicken breast with Chloe, her boyfriend Zach, Marcus, and his daughter Reese.  Plus both this morning and yesterday morning, we also had breakfast with Shawn and Mary.  In the middle of that I had a little hike around the park, got some rest and relaxation, read a little of my book, and just had some nice time away form home.

But now we are back, and I need to mow the yard and then help my mom load some hay in her barn and try to be back home by 8 p.m. to watch Bears play tonight.

Friday, Sept. 13 - It's Friday the 13th!

5:06 a.m. - Yes, it is Friday, the 13th, and yes, I have to attend an ROE principals' meeting today.  Those aren't exactly good news items.  On the other hand, in looking at my schedule, I don't have an officiating assignment scheduled for the next 10 days!  Plus, today is pay day!  Plus, if all my calculations are correct, I'm going to pay off the loan for the Eagle.  Plus, today after school we are going to a new campground for the weekend!  So hopefully the scary things with this day Friday the 13th don't offset the anticipated good things!

Yesterday was another busy day - admin meeting, post-observation conference meeting, and volleyball at Wethersfield.  I did try to watch some football last night, but I was very tired.  The Bills were destroying the Dolphins, so I didn't watch that long.  I did tune in to some news commentary.  Former President Trump has decided not to debate Vice President Harris again - that's a smart move on his part because he got beaten badly on Tuesday.  And now his new item is that Hatian immigrants are overrunning and destroying a city in Ohio, including eating pets for survival.  The crap that guy spews out of his mouth seems to never end.  And yet their are signs all over the place supporting him for president.  I just don't get it.  

Today the hope is to get through the ROE principals meeting without adding too many things to my "to-do" list and then get back to school at ICE.  Well, in between on the way home I hope to stop at the bank and make that loan payment.  After school, the plan is to get the truck hooked up to the camper and pull out as soon as possible.  I'm not sure what awaits when I get there because I've never been this campground in Monmouth before.  And now there appears to be a little possible rain in the forecast.  Life is an adventure...adventure awaits!

Thursday, Sept. 12

5:29 a.m. - I think we are going camping this weekend in Monmouth.  I'm not sure it's going to be the most relaxing experiences, but we are going someplace new, so that's always fun.  I think we will be leaving after school on Friday.

Yesterday was another busy day.  I completed my first formal observation, and it was humbling event.  The teacher is amazing, and out building is very lucky to have her.  Now I just have to figure out how to do the evaluation on Evaluwise.  

Today is another busy day of what has been a busy week.  I've got an admin meeting in the morning, then an additional meeting after the admin meeting, then go back to school and have a conference with a teacher, and then try to get to Wethersfield for volleyball officiating.  My world has been very hectic this week.

Tuesday, September 10

5:17 a.m. - Yesterday was busy.  There were accomplishments at school in the morning including being able to get in classrooms for some informal observations, watch a fun activity in second grade, and see our newly refurbished morning library room.  All afternoon, unfortunately, I was at CPI training.  This training makes sense when a staff member has to work with an out of control student at the junior high and high school level.  In my situation, a lot of the training was a bit much.  I get that I have to receive the certification, but I could have had more effective use of my time back in the building.  After the training, I had to get some things done.  I needed to fix my headlight bulb in the HHR, so I got that done.  While I was in Milan, I also got some gas, got Amber's prescription, and went to McDonald's for supper.  I can't remember the last time I had a quarter pound cheeseburger; it was delicious.  (Yes, I had two.)  Then I went back home and installed the bulb, and then I proceeded back to the office at ICE to get a few things done.  Once back home, I did a few things to get "camper ready" for this weekend.  I think we are going to a new campground in Monmouth.  I'm unsure about how much I'll like the campground, but it's not far, and it's something different.  

Today is going to be busy again.  Plus, this evening starts three evenings in a row of officiating volleyball.  Here we go.

Monday, September 9

5:43 a.m. - Let's see... a recap of yesterday - church service, visit to mom and dad, watch the Bears win and get some exercise downstairs, visit Caleb in Burlington for supper even though he slept the whole time, do some shopping on the way to Burlington, drive back home and go to bed.  I'd call that a bit of a "hodgepodge" day.  

Today is a Monday, and the temps are going to warm up this week.  I'm not sure if there will be a heat day early dismissal, but it's possible.  Today I have CPI training, which is basically crisis training with a student.  I already completed a lot of online stuff; apparently now someone in person has to go over all the stuff I already went over.  I don't have any officiating as of yet, so maybe I'll have one more quiet night at home after school.
