Sunday, June 30

11:39 a.m. - The most beautiful day of the week was today - pull out day at the campground.  I guess beggars can't be choosers, and Mother Nature will do what she does.  It was an okay camping adventure to Loud Thunder.  We tested out the new bike rack and are hopeful it will do well for us on our vacation.

Today I'm just going to try to get as many little things done as possible...too many to mention here.

OFFICIATING/UMPIRING - NOTHING SCHEDULE UNTIL AFTER MONTANA TRIP

    Thursday, June 27, 2024

    Thursday, June 27

11:36 a.m. - Yesterday was exhausting - three softball games, a meeting with a staff member (went fine), and packing up the camper and going to Loud Thunder and then finding out the Harrison grandchildren were spending the night in the camper, and then finding out that two of the Southwell grandchildren were joining us in the morning.  It was a bit too much for my energy level.  Today is going to be difficult.  I need to mow the grass, work three basketball games starting at 5 p.m., and then try to work a little on the camper.

      Wednesday, June 26

6:30 a.m. - Yesterday started with a rainout, so I got several things accomplished at the new office at Illinois City.  Yes, there were somewhat important things, but there were also less important things like figure out how to print things to the printer, and hooking my speakers up to my computer.  I still haven't figured out how the ceiling fan turns on or if it turns on at all.

I did officiate a couple of basketball games over at the Sherrard league - no issues there except from an annoying Alleman woman in the bleachers who apparently knows everything about officiating --- from the bleachers.

We got a lot of rain last night, which I thought might impact today's softball games, but no such luck.  I need to get those games over and get to ICE office to meet with a staff member.

In the meantime, I'm considering getting the camper out somewhere....Scott County Park makes the most sense.  We are supposed to get rain on Friday, but the rest of the weekend is looking pretty good.  So I think I'm going to get the camper out there either this evening or tomorrow morning.  I'd like to get the camper out and have the new bike rack on for a bit of a trial run before the big trip to Montana.

      Tuesday, June 25

6:45 a.m. - We are getting some rain this morning, and then the temps are supposed to heat up before getting more rain this evening.  Maybe the softball games at PV will be rained out.  I can't say that I would be disappointed.

Yesterday I was in the ICE office and had conversations with a couple of staff members.  Both discussions were good ones.  I continue to learn more and also add more items to my to-do list.  Later in the day I spent some time in the pool after mowing the back yard along the south ditch.  The Harrison kids arrived, so we played in the pool.  The "shark game" never gets old.  Later last night I watched the game seven of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Florida won...never gets old watching the agony of defeat and glory of victory.

Today I had softball and basketball on the schedule...if there is no softball, I'll likely spend some time at the ICE office.  I have several scheduled emails to go out at 8 a.m. - emails that are attempting to address items on the to-do list.

      Monday, June 24

5:56 a.m. - So I just looked up our stay for our first night on our 2-week trip out west in Jackson, Minnesota.  Sure enough, it's in one of the flood warning zones that currently exists up that direction.  That's not good news.  Please Mother Nature, let them dry up and keep the folks safe.

Yesterday was a nice day.  I got a little workout in, I got a couple of little projects done like work on the camper and putting mulch in a couple of spots in the front yard.  I also washed the north side of the house.  Yesterday evening I went to my mom and dad's and got a couple of trees out of the way that mom has been asking about.  And during the afternoon, I also got a little quiet time in the pool.  All-in-all it was a nice day.

Now on to today.  I have a couple of meetings this morning at the Illinois City Elementary office - meeting with the SEL and special education teachers.  Those are the last of the "big pieces" of the puzzle that I need to focus on for the building.  There are other pieces, but those can wait.  I spent a lot of time with the master schedule yesterday, and that helped.

After those meetings, I'm not sure what is on the agenda.  Usually if I don't have anything, something finds me.

      Sunday, June 23

9:24 am. - I had a chance this morning to spend some time with the proposed Illinois City building master schedule.  It's not perfect, but Mrs. Parchert and Mrs. Hall have done a good job in their proposal to try to do the best with it.  I just needed to spend some time with it to see the good parts and the challenging parts.

Yesterday Amber and I went for a bike ride, walked through the Farmer's Market, and then we went to a bike shop called Jerry's and Sparky's, and I purchased a new bike rack for the truck and hopefully the camper.  I'm not sure how well it's going to work for the camper, but I guess we will find out.  After returning home, there were already people here for a pool day.  I didn't spend any time in the pool, but that's okay.  I did spend some time with Knox.  Amber and I finished off the day by going down to the casino, and I didn't lose, which is a win.

Today I'd like to go to the school and get in a work out.  I think I'd also like to work on that television antenna on the camper.  I think I can get to it without climbing on the roof.

Tomorrow, I'm planning on spending much of the day in the Illinois City building in my office.

      Saturday, June 22

7:01 a.m. - Yesterday was a good day.  I met with 4-of-the-5 classroom teachers at elementary and reviewed their proposal for an revised daily schedule.  Their rationale points seemed genuine and reasonable, so I've determined to continue to explore their suggestions as I continue to talk to more staff members about their thoughts, including the interventionist that I spoke with individually after the classroom teacher session.

I now have a meeting with the SEL instructor on Monday; plus I'm trying to keep the Special Ed. teacher informed.  I think after Monday (and keeping the Special Ed teacher informed), I'll have communicated with all the "big pieces".

There are many, many items on the IC to-do list to tackle, but hopefully I can get to some of them on Monday since I'm not umpiring.

Today we are going for a morning bike ride, and then it's a pool day.  And then apparently we are supposed to get storms.

      Friday, June 21

5:27 a.m. - Yesterday, we got rained out at North Scott.  I was most of the way there when we received the call, which sort of sucked, but the good news was that I had the day to work on getting more stuff moved over to the Illinois City office.  I was able to finish that effort, and apparently that's a good thing because the window guys were closing in on my old room.  That room is really going to look nice with those new windows.

So with the desk and belongings moved, the office is taking shape.  I have some additional work that needs completed, but I did get the desktop computer connected and up and running.  I also figured out how the air conditioner works.

After being "at the office", I got home and mowed the yard.  I finished the majority of the yard, and then a pop-up rain shower arrived and stop me from getting the push mowing done.  That's on the agenda for today.  Last night after getting rained out from mowing, I went to where Chase works and had a chance to talk with him a bit.  He really looks great.  I hadn't had a face-to-face conversation with him since November, so it was such a joy to even have a few minutes to see him and give him a hug and tell him that he looks great and that I'm proud of him.  He still has a long ways to go, but he's gotten this far.  After that I went and saw my friend Greg, and I haven't seen him in a long time either.  It was great just to sit and chit-chat with him and catch up on how he's doing as well as his family.

Today, I'm meeting with the group of classroom teachers at Illinois City to discuss their thoughts on the daily "master schedule".  I may end up meeting with other staff members if they ask, which one already has, which is fine.  I'm just trying to learn the puzzle pieces individually before I try to wrap my brain around how they all fit together.  That's likely hard for folks to understand...I'm not trying to leave people out.  I'm trying to focus on each part to best learn first, and then bring the parts together.

With all of this, I'm not real sure how long I'll be at the Illinois City office today.  I'd like to get home sometime and finish the yard.  The weather forecast is calling for heavy rain Saturday night, so with this heat and now all this rain, I may be mowing again all of it on Sunday.

      Thursday, June 20

5:38 a.m. - I did not sleep well last night.  This position at Illinois City Elementary has me thinking too much!

Yesterday was a nice day.  We got some softball umpiring in, and then I got my desk moved to my new office, and then we went to Pizza Ranch in Muscatine for Amber's birthday.  Pretty much the whole gang was there - only Patrick, Ava, and Darrin were missing.

Today it's more softball, but we start early at 8:30 a.m. today.  Then I'll be working on moving some more stuff to the office.  Tonight I'm not sure what's going on.  I think I need to mow the yard again, but that can still wait another day.

      Wednesday, June 19

6:02 a.m. - Yesterday was a long one.  I had two junior varsity softball games in hot temperatures at Pleasant Valley, and then I had four varsity girls basketball games at Sherrard.  I'm tired.  Before that day started, though, I did get out and spray the rest of the weeds I wanted to get to.  And in between the events, I did get a hair cut, grabbed a sandwich for lunch, and picked up a birthday gift for Amber.

Today it's more softball in the morning, and then we are headed to Muscatine Pizza Ranch to celebrate Amber's birthday.

Tuesday, June 18 - Happy 51 Amber Lea!

6:05 a.m. - As of last night's BOE meeting, I've officially been hired as the principal at Illinois City K-2.  Plus, last night the BOE continued moving forward with the proposed new central K-5 building for the school district.  Oh, and my replacement for my English position also was hired.  Ya...it was sort of an impactful night last night at the BOE meeting.  I'm energized to get the opportunity to help out the staff and students and parents at IC.  This is one of those forks in the road situations, and I'm comfortable with taking a slight veer off of what was previously my path but in the same general direction.

Yesterday, I finally got to those weeds in the backyard, but the sprayer gave me fits.  I hope to go out there and finish the job this morning.

Most importantly, today is Amber Lea's 51st birthday!  We aren't doing much to celebrate today, but we will be celebrating tomorrow.  I need to pick up a card and/or gift of some kind...not sure what that will encompass, but I'll think of something today.

I think I'll change my email settings!  Oh, and I made great progress yesterday on the history of district 300.  The Reynolds Press is my friend.

      Monday, June 17

4:37 a.m. - Another day, another long day, a day filled with accomplishments.  Tony and I got through five more games at the Monmouth Shootout.  I then drove to Burlington and met with Carmen and Tyler at Culver's.  I then drove back home and treated myself to some Bally's time.  I then stopped at my mom and dad's to visit with Dad on Father's Day.  I then came home and watched some of the Iowa Corn 350 NASCAR race.  And then finally I got the good news that I passed my test for that dang administrator academy!  I scored an 80%, and I only needed a 70%, so I'll take it.

Today is another big day.  I did take the day off from umpiring or officiating, so I am going to complete some yardwork and poolwork activities.  I've been meaning to spray weeds in the backyard and along the fence lines, and that job has just been eluding me.  Maybe if I get out there in the morning, the wind will be calm and the temps won't be so hot because this week is supposed to be a hot one.  And tonight is the BOE meeting, and the approval (or rejection) of the principal position at Illinois City is up for a vote.  I need to clear that hurdle, and then I can really focus on getting started at that job.

      Sunday, June 16 -- Happy Father's Day

5:18 a.m.   - Working basketball yesterday felt good.  It was a long day, but it was a fun day.  Working with Jason and Tony made it all the better, but just being on the court in the game with the coaches and players was awesome.  We worked seven games yesterday, and today it's just Tony and I with five games.  It will be rough, but we will make it.

After yesterday's seven games, the Harrison kids were here, so we spent some time in the pool, and then we watched a movie and went to bed.

Today after basketball I'm headed to Burlington to have ice cream with Carmen and Tyler.  It will be a long day, but it will be fun too.

      Saturday, June 15

6:42 a.m. - I got a lot done yesterday.  After softball games at Davenport North, I went to Farm-N-Fleet and picked up some supplies.  Then I came home and proceeded to wack weeds.  And I was able to get the entire project done.  Now, I just need to spray weeds in the backyard and along the fence, and I'll have the yard where I want it...temporarily at least until everything grows back.  In the evening, Amber and I went to see Chase at his work and to have some supper.  It's the first time I've seen him since last November, and he looked good.  After that, we stopped at the casino and lost some money, so I should remain on their mailing list.  Then we went out to the Loud Thunder Campground to see Mrs. Corlett's new camper.  While there I talked with her in-laws whom I've known for a long time - that included a tour of their motor coach, which is a monster 40-footer.

Today, I'm off to officiate basketball with Tony and Jason.  I haven't seen Tony in awhile, so that will be fun.

      Friday, June 14

6:12 a.m. - Yesterday was a good day.  I got up early and mowed the grass and then headed to Illinois City to meet with Mrs. Bollman and get her thoughts.  Basically I learned more of what I don't know, which admittedly is a growing list of items.  I also took another tour of the building, which is a mess right now due to summer cleaning.  I measured my office too, and I think my desk is going to fit, but perhaps not all of it.  After that visit, met with Barb McKay.  She has a lot of scrap books about Rockridge High School, and I'm not ready for that yet, but I asked her to save all of it.  Because that visit didn't take long, I decided to go to the Rock Island County Historical Society, and that was a big jackpot day.  I found lots of pictures of the one-room schools I'm looking for thanks to Mr. John Hauberg's work from the early 1950's.  I'm going to end up going back there to do some more digging.  I worked as long as my phone had battery power left.  After that Amber and I went to Andalusia to Tucker's game, but we didn't get to his game, as it was called off because of storms.  Before that, though, we ate at Luebbe's and got some ice cream at Shivers and Shakes.  I finished up the night with a little reading of Dick Proenneke and fell to sleep on the couch trying to watch the Stanley Cup Finals.

      Thursday, June 13

6:11 a.m. - Yesterday's exam for that administrators' academy was brutal.  After finishing the four hour exam, I hit submit and prayed for divine intervention.  The information we covered in two days (Monday and Wednesday) legitimately could have been a semester long course in an college/university educational administration program.  There were a couple of multiple choice questions that perplexed me.  The one case study script that we read and then had to evaluate the candidate was shaky; I feel I likely judged too harshly.  And then there were the two essay questions at the end.  I think my background as an English teacher may have helped me; at least I hope so.

After trudging out of the ROE, I headed home mentally exhausted.  What to do next?  Go to a softball game in New Windsor and watch Brinley and Brooklyn play.  We did stop at the Depot with Jack and Rhonda and Tucker and have supper which was nice.  After getting home, though, I went to bed.  Now I don't get the exam results until Sunday...keeping my fingers crossed.  If I don't pass the exam, I'm not sure what happens.

Despite that uncertainty, I heard there were two candidates form my English position at the high school, and the two were both very good.  It will be a tough decision to select a choice.

Today is an important but hopefully fun day.  I'm going to spend some time at Illinois City Grade School with Mrs. Bollman to seek anything she can share with me about assuming a principal position there (pending BOE approval next week).  Then I'm going to meet with Barb McKay and talk the history of the Rockridge School District.  Somewhere this morning I'd like to see if I can mow some yard and maybe do some weed wacking.

      Wednesday, June 12

6:42 a.m. - I just need to get through today.  How many days do I find myself saying that?

Today is Day 2 of the principal academy that I need to pass.  I'm going to go early to study, concentrate during the instruction, and then hopefully pass the exam.  It's going to be a long day.

Yesterday, we started out umpiring at DeWitt.  I was with Jason, so it was fun.  The umpiring itself was not fun.  After returning home the Harrison grandchildren were here.  I put them to work helping me trim the bushes and pick up the clippings.  Then I went to my mom and dad's and worked on the bushes there.

It wasn't a fun day, but it was productive.

      Tuesday, June 11

6:25 a.m. -  Yesterday's administrator academy at the ROE was brutal.  The Danielson model for evaluating teachers is much different using it from the administrator's side than the teacher's side.  I never really much worried about really understanding the model as a teacher - I just figured good teaching practice would take care of itself.  Plus, I never really got upset if my students never accomplished their learning goal because I figured they never would.  I still wanted to have reading and writing as the areas of the goals, though, because that's what students needed.  So I never really got upset if I was a proficient teacher or an excellent teacher.  When attempting to help teachers improve teaching practices, though, knowing the areas of the model and the language within the model is really important.  Sheesh.

After completing the day of training, I got home and worked on the pool and the hot tub.  The temperatures are going to climb this week, so there will be swimmers.  I just needed to get the pool vacuumed up and add some chemicals and chlorine tabs to the filter system.  The hot tub needed drained, reinflated, refilled, and chemicals added as well.  It won't be ready this morning, but it should be ready by this evening.

Finally, I ended the evening by going to my mom and dad's and getting some grain for her and having a little visit.  It was nice to see them, I haven't been able to visit for a couple of weeks.  I need to get over there and help them do some yardwork.  Then again, I need to do some yardwork as well.  There just isn't a lot of time in my  calendar right now.

      Monday, June 10

4:12 a.m. - Of course I can't sleep because I'm thinking too much.  I'm thinking of this administrator academy I have today and Wednesday.  I'm thinking about the new job.  I'm thinking about stuff I need to get done at home.  I'm thinking about our vacation to Montana and getting ready for that.  Thinking, thinking, thinking.

Yesterday, I did manage to get all the pre-work done for today's academy - at least I think I got it done.  I'm not sure if I did it correctly, but I did submit it.

Today is going to be hard.  It's going to be hard mentally because I need to just keep my mouth shut and get through it.  Evaluating staff isn't really that hard, but the Danielson Model and the 50 Rules stuff make it seem harder and scary.  Usually good teaching involves engaged teachers with engaged students successfully learning the skills needed to be successful at the next level.  And no teacher accomplishes that the same way, and not all teachers are excellent but that's okay.  Unfortunately, the evaluation process seems more like enforcement than coaching, and it really should be more like coaching.

We will survive today...just stay focused and awake.

Sunday, June 9 - Happy Birthday Darren

9:21 a.m. - Yesterday was a blur.  The morning featured moving the futon downstairs and then going to umpire at Muscatine.  They have a beautiful, new turf field and stadium.  The guy I worked with was pretty much a newbie at softball, but he also officiates other sports, so he did fine.  Of course, one of the games had to go extra innings.  That was 3-out-of-4 games this weekend that went extra innings - bunch of crap.  Then immediately after softball, we had a cookout at the campground that featured Grandma Rhonda, Cole, all the Harrisons, all the Southwells, and Karrigan and Michael.  So counting Amber and I, we had 17 people.  It was chaos.  And then "Gigi" decided to have all the grandchildren stay the night - except Knox.  That total was six.  Needless to say, that was a record breaker, and hopefully one that will stand and not be repeated for a long time.  Our camper is pretty good size, but six grandchildren is a lot.  Now I'm in the quiet time of the morning, but I need to get the camper loaded and pull out by 11 a.m.  I'm not going to make it.  I'll try to be close.  Then today I need to work on "pre-work" activities for the administrator academy.  I guess there is no rest for the wicked.

      Saturday, June 8

9:36 a.m. - It's definitely not been a complete week of camping, and today won't be a complete day of camping.  I had to come home to move the futon downstairs to make room upstairs for the couch that apparently is arriving.  Now I'm going to do some work on the computer after taking a shower and go work some more softball ... something I generally try to avoid on a Saturday in June.

In other news, yesterday's softball games were horrendously long.  Both games went extra innings...sheesh.  After the game, though, I received word that I was selected by the interview committees for the Illinois City principal position.  I'm not sure if that's a blessing or not, but it's going to be a new adventure.  I guess "the word" is out because my high school English position has been posted - out with the old and in with the new.  All of this stuff is pending BOE approval, so nothing is official yet.  I'll have time to reflect on this later, but for now I guess I'll just say that it sure will be something different.

Last night I informed mom and Carmen.  In fact, mom came out to the campground, so I was able to have a fireside chat with her and explain how it all went down.  That's it for today...let's survive another one.  I think there are folks visiting the campground this evening after softball.  Maybe tomorrow I can have one complete camping day...or morning...since tomorrow is pull out day to put the camper back next to the house likely until our vacation in July.

      Friday, June 7

7:43 a.m. - This is going to be a quick entry.  Yesterday was productive but exhausting.  I met with Floyd Vroman and the small group from the Curry School.  Then I had to go to Karrigan's and wack weeds, but on the way I stopped at the museum in Mercer County and had a great experience there trying to track down some information for the CUSD300 history project I'm working on.  I finally did get back to the camper, and the wind died down, and I had a nice campfire experience.

My summer was suppose to be simple and relaxing.  It's not.

I have some umpiring today, and then I'm not sure what's going to happen.

      Thursday, June 6

7:36 a.m. - Yesterday went fine....the interview for the Illinois City principal opening was interesting.  I spoke with the administrative team first, and then I spoke with the teachers team.  I'm definitely likely not the most qualified candidate on paper, and I haven't heard anything back, so my guess is that another candidate was selected.  That decision is perfectly fine, as I explained to both teams yesterday.

Before the interview, I spent time working on mowing the yard and cleaning the pool.  I still need to spray weeds and I need to trim the bushes, but that's likely going to have to wait until another day or at least until this afternoon.  Today I'm headed to meet Floyd Vroman regarding his experiences and memories of being educated in the Rockridge School District prior to being the Rockridge School District.  After that I'm headed to Taylor Ridge to meet up with a group of the folks attending the Curry School Reunion - a different one-room school from "back in the day".  After that, I'm not sure what I'll be doing.
