Tuesday, October 31 - Happy Halloween

6:15 a.m. - Yesterday went okay for a Monday.  There wasn't much to the school day, and it went fast.  Despite all my efforts to give students plenty of time to work on their presentations, many are not finished.  I guess maybe they can work on it today on their half day.  Last night, officiating went fine.  The highlight of the evening was going to a local restaurant and having a calzone.  I don't have a game now for a week, which will give me a little time to clear my brain and recharge for the upcoming basketball season.

Today's goal is to survive the professional development of the day.

Monday, October 30

5:21 a.m. - I guess the winterization of the campers was completed just in time!  Baby, it's cold outside and the trick or treaters tomorrow will have to bundle up.  We had some kids in costume yesterday - Brinley, Luke, Tucker, and Rosie were all dressed up as we went over to the Edgington Church to trunk treat.  Apparently, Brooklyn was deer hunting.  After that, I went to HyVee and picked up some stamps and dryer sheets - I need the stamps to send out bills, and I need the dryer sheets to put in the camper.  On my way home, I stopped at mom and dad's and visited with them a bit.  I hadn't seen them in awhile, so it was nice to chat with them.  Then I tried to watch some of the Bears game, but it became a blowout, and I fell to sleep.  

This week - another week - is going to be a bit odd.  Tomorrow is a 11:30 dismissal, and Wednesday and Thursday are 1:30 dismissal days with parent-teacher conferences in the evening.  And then Friday we have no school.  And then Saturday is the big playoff football game.  There won't be much dedicated academic focus among the students, so it's a good thing I have presentations scheduled.

I think I will dedicate this week to reading the basketball rule book and casebook, along with my Dick Proenneke book.  I do have a junior high girls basketball game, but then I have a bit of a break from officiating until things kick into full gear a week from today.  Next week is definitely go-time with basketball officiating.  It's a good thing...I need some money to pay that bill that is looming for the new pool motor that I expect I will be picking up on Friday.  

Friday, I'm hoping to work on the back swamp area...maybe even get my mom an dad's tractor and do some work back there.

Sunday, October 29

2:13 p.m.- It's been a busy day, but it's been a good day.  The last camping weekend, of course, was "winterization weekend", but with a different twist this season.  Shawn and I had our campers at Loud Thunder, and we woke up and had some breakfast and started on winterizing the campers.  Then we took both rigs to Shawn's ranch and he backed them both into his storage shed.  He's so good at anything with vehicles and campers; I'm blessed to have him as a friend and camping buddy.  Mother Nature even cooperated...of course it was cold, but we had a real good day yesterday and the weather was sunny part of the day.  

Amber is now doing some laundry, but most of the camper contents are back downstairs into storage.  It's great to get all this stuff done today, even though, camping season ending is a real bummer.

Friday, October 27

6:46 a.m. - I slept in the camper last night, and I woke up to a flashing light...thought maybe it was a storm with lightening, but no, I had just slept past by 5:30 wake-up alarm and my phone was flashing!  There were no worries, though, 5:46 was still plenty of time to visit the bathroom, make a cup of coffee, watch the weather forecast, and head home to shower up and get ready for the work day.  Today should be a nice day.  I want to cover a few things regarding stage fright and presenting to a group, and then the students will use time very effectively and be ready for their presentations beginning next Wednesday.  And look at my schedule below....there isn't much officiating...there's a little lull coming up because of parent-teacher conferences and time between volleyball and basketball season.

I'd really like some dry weather...I guess it's supposed to be windy today, but I just would take some dry weather.

Thursday, October 26

5:03 a.m. -  So a man walks into a bowling alley and bar in Maine and just starts shooting people with an automatic weapon.  That's what I was watching last night on the news outlets after returning home from officiating junior high basketball.  This morning the news outlets are saying there are at least 15 people dead and dozens injured.  One news outlet is saying the guy is still loose and is a certified firearm instructor and in the reserves.  Another outlet is saying the guy is still on the loose.  Another outlet said there is mental illness involved.  What the hell?  

Yesterday went well.  I enjoyed reading from my book, and I got a few things accomplished even thought I didn't get many essays scored.  I only have one more class left, and hopefully I can accomplished that today.  I enjoyed officiating junior high girls basketball last night with Shawn.  In fact, he drove the team bus to Orion, so I rode with him and the teams.  That was a first for me.  

I would like the consistent rainy conditions to stop.  A little break in the weather would be nice, as I'd like to have some nice, pretty fall days for the upcoming camping weekend.  Mother Nature, could you please help me out?

Wednesday, October 25

5:39 a.m. - Yesterday was good.  The school day went okay, I scored more essays, and I pushed out the William Byrd presentation.  I continue to be amazed how many students only half-heartedly listen to instructions and details about an assignment and then get upset because they don't perform well.  After school, I had a nice "camping evening".  I set up the Eagle in Site 21.  There were only two other campers in the park, and only one of those had someone there, so I pretty much had the campground to myself.  Despite the afternoon rain, Mother Nature stopped the rain in time for me to get everything set up, start a fire, and have a nice evening.  I roasted some hot dogs and had some quiet campfire time.  I went on a little walk in the early dark hours, and I watched some MeTV, complete with the M.A.S.H. and the Beverly Hillbillies.  Because it was going to rain overnight, I decided to come home last night and just sleep at home.  I did sleep well, and I'm pretty sure I'm just about completely over my cold.  Today is a Free Read Wednesday, and I'd like to get the rest of the essays scored.

Tuesday, October 24

5:47 a.m. - Yesterday went fast and was productive.  Last night's game were lopsided, but working with Geoff Long was fun.  He just started officiating last year, and he hasn't done many junior high games, but he said he worked a lot of youth games.  I even got started scoring some essays yesterday, which was nice.

Today I hope to get the camper out to Loud Thunder and maybe spend an evening there.  We'll have to see if the weather is going to cooperate.

Monday, October 23

6:16 a.m. - We are on to a new work week.  The wedding weekend is behind us.  The car repair is behind us.  The eye appointment and all the errands on that day are behind us.  Volleyball officiating is behind us.  So now a new work begins, and I'd really like some help from Mother Nature regarding the weather.  I'm not seeing sunny, calm, fall conditions.  The forecast from TV6's Kevin Phelps was not encouraging.  

I do think my cold is getting better, but it's been a long recovery.  I slept fairly well last night, and I didn't seem to have many coughing episodes.  Maybe I'm on the downhill slope of my first cold of the winter season.  I suppose this week will be partially dedicated to basketball since the rules videos and exams open up.

12:36 p.m. - I didn't expect to make it home this early, but we did, which is a good thing.  It was a bit of hectic time, as we left here about 9:15 a.m.  We arrived up in Waukegan in time to grab check into the hotel, grab a bite to eat at Culver's, and then get to the wedding around 3 p.m.  It was a great event...a little chilly for an outside wedding, but it was perfect for the bride and groom and for Ron and Jen.  All of "the boys" had a nice time together too.

I drove a different way home today, much to the chagrin of Amber, but I enjoyed the drive much better.  Now, I need to get some things done before getting some downtime hopefully tonight watching football.

7:43 a.m. - I'd really like to be camping right now, but it's also going to be nice to drive somewhere new and be at Ron's daughter's wedding.  I'm still not feeling the greatest, but I think I'm feeling better today than I did yesterday, so maybe there is some improvement to this cold.  

Yesterday was productive.  I was able to finish all the school stuff I needed to do.  I didn't go to the football game, but I listened.  Darren was broadcasting the game, and then he stopped over to chat and check in with the details of his life.  I guess he's doing okay..."riding the chaos".  

I think I'll try to get in a little exercise this morning, figure out what I'm going to wear, and then pack up some clothes to wear tomorrow. 

I'm not liking the extended forecast for next weekend...please Mother Nature, give us some nice weather to do a little camping on the last weekend of camping season at Loud Thunder.

Friday, October 20

6:25 a.m. - Yesterday was not a day off.  I wasn't at school, but I sure was busy.  I moved the hot tub, attended my eye appointment, dropped off the jugs at the pool place, dropped of the pool motor at RIEMCO, went to HyVee, dropped off the weed trimmer at Huffman's in Aledo, stopped at Mercer Market, came back home and connected and filled the hot tub, grilled burger and steaks for supper, visited with the Southwells, and then went to RHS volleyball senior night.  While there, an official wasn't feeling well, so I was asked to fill in.  ALWAYS when I think I'm done with a season, there's just something left.  That was a busy day.

And now I have a terrible head cold, but I'm heading off to work to finish off the week.  It has been a very, very long week.

7:02 a.m. - We've made it to Thursday!  I'm taking the day off today because I have an eye appointment.  I hope to get more things done than just an eye exam.  I'm going to the pool store to return some antifreeze; I'm going to the motor store to get our pool motor repaired for next season.  And I may try to find a hearing place to see about getting my ears checked.  

Yesterday was unique.  I was able to view about thirty junior complete the new digital PSAT NMSQT.  It went really well, and I like the new style for the simpler role of the proctor.  I don't know if it's better or worse for students, but I'm going to send a survey out to students tomorrow after today's group finishes.  Then yesterday afternoon there was junior high girls basketball at Mercer County with Sherrard.  The seventh grade game was a blowout, and the eighth grade game was a little tense.  I was working with a second year official, and he needs some work, but he did fine.  

I wish it was Friday, but I'll take my day off on a Thursday all the same.  Now I need to get the garbage to the end of the driveway!

Wednesday, October 18

6:31 a.m. - Luke Jason spent the night with us.  I am seeing him this morning, but he was already sleeping when I got home after last night's volleyball match.  The best thing about last night's match was that it's the last volleyball of the season!  I'm getting better at volleyball, but it's just not as much fun.  Plus, as well as Jacqy did in her first season, I missed working with Braeden.   After the match, we went and got some pizza at the Hillsdale Truck Stop to celebrate the night.  And then it was home.  I took a little NyQuil because I have caught a bad cold.  With the medicine and not sleeping the night before very well, I slept hard   I woke up at 6 p.m., and really could have stayed in bed.

Today it's PSAT day.  I'm not sure how the students will do, but we tried to get as prepared as possible.  Then later today, I'm at MerCo for a little junior high girls basketball.  Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming.

Tuesday, October 17

5:59 a.m. - Yesterday went as planned until the afternoon when I received an email from Annawan stating the volleyball match was postponed until Wednesday.  And because I'm officiating junior high basketball on Wednesday, I can't go.  That didn't help my wallet, but it did help my spirits, since I really want volleyball to be over anyway.  And with an afternoon off from officiating, I took the opportunity to get home and mow the grass.  It didn't really look that awful bad, but then I got into it and decided it was a good plan.  With Mother Nature's help with some cooler temperatures, perhaps that will be the last mowing job of the year.  I even capped the night off with a little time in the hot tub.

And because I didn't check the filter and add some chemicals last night, the first thing I did this morning, since I couldn't sleep anyway, was to jump back in the hot tub this morning.  It feels good to get out there on a cool morning and then jump in the hot water.  It almost feels equally cool to get back out and dry off in the cool air.

So another day is arriving, and today shouldn't be awful.  The last scheduled volleyball match is today at Riverdale.  They've been on a bad losing street, but Bureau Valley isn't very good.  So this might be senior night for the Rams, and it likely could be a good old "highly competitive" match.  I'll keep my sights on truck stop pizza to get me through the evening.

Monday, October 16

6:10 a.m. - This is going to be a weird week, but first, a recap of yesterday.  We went to church service; I visited with mom and dad and their friend Jack; and then we commenced to attempt to work on the pool after determining the Bears were going to lose to Minnesota.  The pool was a challenge because the return on the steps is damaged.  The plug I had purchased first didn't work.  I then went to Lowe's to try something else.  I doubt it will work, but we went with it.  Maybe with divine intervention the pool will make it through the winter.  I then watched a little more football and had some chili that Amber had made and went to bed - by myself since Amber slept with Sailor and Sophie - the granddogs.

Now on to today.  Actually this week is going to be a weird week.  This is the final week of volleyball season, and it's PSAT week, and I have an eye appointment on Thursday, and we have a wedding north of Chicago on Saturday.  So this week is survival mode - get to next week...get to basketball season, get to the last week of camping season, settle in to the fourth quarter grading period, and look to the holiday season.  Right now I need a lesson plan for today, so I think I'll do that and then stretch in the basement because I'm really tired and sore from closing the pool this weekend.

Sunday, October 15

7:41 a.m. - Despite the weather being crappy, I was able to get some things accomplished with the pool yesterday.  Plus, I was able to get a lot of stuff into storage in the storage shed.  Today, the task is to winterize the pool with antifreeze and get the cover on.  Those are easy things to do, but perhaps Mother Nature will give me a little nicer day to accomplish all of that.  

Also yesterday, I was able to watch some football.  Illinois and Notre Dame both won, so that was nice to see.  

I think we are going to church service this morning, and I would like to get some assignments scored.  I also need to get a lesson plan figured out for tomorrow.  The Bears are on at noon...it would be nice to watch them.  I'd like to go see mom and dad sometime too.

Saturday, October 14

5:35 a.m. - Yesterday afternoon after school I went into Moline and picked up supplies for the pool winterization project.  On the way home one of the jugs of antifreeze broke in the truck, so that's $20 down the drain.  I hope I have enough now for the job.  I'm not sure when I'll be getting to that job because the rain and cold and wind continue today.  It's just gross outside.  Yesterday at school, the day went okay.  I did forget to cover Mrs. Carter's sixth period for about 20 minutes .... oops.  I now have some assignments to score, but hopefully there will be time this weekend to do that since we are not camping.  I also need to get a lesson plan figured out for Monday.  

Today I'd like to get a start on closing the pool, but I don't see that happening.  Maybe I'll get lucky with the weather, and it will clear.  If not the pool, I'll score some assignments, get some exercise, and maybe watch some football.  

Late last night I did accept some softball games - four of them from Foremost.  I've already got a lot of softball dates scheduled for next Spring.  On top of that, I had an assignor contact our basketball crew for the 24-25 season - crazy. 

After last night's purchases...the checkbook balance isn't looking so good.  And next weekend we have a wedding that will feature some expenditure...ugh.  I'm just really struggling to keep up with the cash flow right now.

Friday, October 13

5:58 a.m. - Yuck!  It's Friday, October 13; it's rainy and cold and is going to be rainy and cold all weekend.  How about we cancel school and all stay in home and drink hot apple cider and watch fall Hallmark movies?  No?

Okay...it's off to school we must go.  I have some things to do, but it should be a pretty light work day.  I will need to score some assignments this weekend, and I'm hoping there will be time to get that done.  

Yesterday was okay.  It was fun to go officiate with Tad and see Jason.  It's always fun to get together with those guys.  I heard from my son Cole on my way home from Oneida.  Apparently he spent three days tent camping in the Arctic Circle, and now he's back in Alaska.  He said that they didn't do much by stay in their tent because it was so cold.  Ya, I guess that makes sense.

I think after school today I'll go get antifreeze and chlorine .... maybe the rain and wind will stop sometime this weekend, and I'll be able to work on closing the pool.

And in other news...it's PAY DAY!  Maybe there is at least one good thing about Friday, the 13th!

Thursday, October 12

5:24 a.m. - Yesterday was an okay day.  The rain fell.  I started reading a new book.  I got schoolwork done that I needed to get done.  I visited with the Harrison grandchildren and Jack and Rhonda after school.  I officiated some junior high girls basketball at RRJH.  All of that got done.  Oh, and I also scheduled the HHR for repair next Friday.  

Today after school, I'm headed to ROWVA junior high for some more junior high girls basketball.  Plus I get to work with Tad.  That means I'll get to visit with Tad and Jason, and that will be fun - as fun as a night of junior high girls basketball can be.

I have only two volleyball matches remaining on my schedule - both are next week.  I'm ready for volleyball to conclude.  The match on Monday should be fast...A-Town doesn't have a very good record.  Tuesday's match could be highly competitive; the match-up looks fairly even.  I'm just ready to focus on basketball.  Basketball is looking busy.  From November 8 to December 21 I have just two open nights other than Sundays.  I guess its a good thing, because my cash flow is very low right now.

Wednesday, October 11

5:37 a.m.  - Last night wasn't fun.  In the sophomore match, there was a line-up problem.  I've had it happen before, and I'm not sure whether it's my fault or the players' fault or what happens.  All I know is that somehow the team gets the first server wrong.  But not only did I miss it, so did the scoring table.  That's really not supposed to happen.  And then to correct it, I'm not sure I did that right either.  On top of everything, I'm really over the volleyball season.  I'm ready to move on to the basketball season.  

Other than that, yesterday was productive.  I got the scoring of assignments I needed to get done, even if the majority of the students didn't exactly have a busy Tuesday.  The slate is now set to continue writing instruction for the remainder of the week, and today is a Free Read Wednesday, which is always nice.  

Also today, I officiate junior high girls basketball, which at least is at Rockridge, so I don't have to drive.

In other news, I was able to get a doctor's appointment scheduled for a physical.  And I discovered that I'm going to need to get the HHR fixed...another bigger bill that I wasn't expecting this fall.  It's a little disheartening to try to earn extra money only to have other things suck it up.  Oh well..I guess it's only money.

Tuesday, October 10

5:28 a.m. - The good news is that it's already Tuesday.  The bad news is that I didn't get enough schoolwork done yesterday.  Now I'm really behind, but I'll have to live with it.  Maybe I can work to catch up today.  

Yesterday was a mix of good and bad after returning from the camping weekend.  I got the oil changed in the HHR only to find out what has been causing the little shake I'm feeling.  Apparently the steering control arms need replaced, but I don't really have the cash right now to do that.  I'll have to figure something out for that.  Next, I did get my prescriptions picked up, which isn't always easy to do on a work week.  Finally, the pool motor doesn't seem to be working, which could be the motor dying, or it could be the capacitor within the motor that has failed.  Either way, that problem presents a bigger problem of trying to shut the pool down without a motor to drain the pool.  I'll have to figure that out too.  It's always something, isn't it?
