8:06 a.m. - I got a good night's sleep last night, and this morning I finally had a "not awful" trip to the bathroom. My stomach is still sort of tight and "gurgly", but I don't have the aches and chills, and I feel a higher level of energy. I think I'm going to live. So now, I'm going to work from home to clean and disinfect my isolation area in the house, and try to get some schoolwork done. The weather is supposed to be nice today; I'd really like to get my work done and perhaps get out for a walk somewhere and get some fresh air.

6:38 a.m. - My game last night was a good one...last one of the season. I came home, and within an hour little Brinley was throwing up and Luke was wide awake and screaming - welcome back to reality. Now after getting intermittent sleep trying to attend to a sick grandchild I'm headed to a softball clinic. I guess the good Lord will never give us more than we can handle.

I'm hoping to get back and get a nap, so we can have a fun night out tonight at the Jeff Dunham show.

6:18 a.m. - The issue between Ukraine and Russia has now escalated to the point that all 18-16 year old males in Ukraine have been ordered to defend the country. There was a story this morning on the news of a man exiting a police station having been issued two guns. He was asked if he knew how to use them, and he said he did not. Another story interviewed two brothers that were headed into the country from Poland, and they said they were going back to fight. The situation is heartbreaking ... citizens that are not trained attempting to hold off a superpower's fighting forces. Geez.

Tonight is my last basketball game of the season. I wish it wasn't. I wish I had a boys sectional game, but I'll have to be satisfied with working a regional championship tonight. The game is between Ridgewood and United. I know both coaches very well, so that will be fun to work with them. I also know Wethersfield's gym very well. And finally, I know my two partners very well. The gym is going to be full; it's going to be hot; it's going to be loud. Honestly, this type of game and atmosphere makes the grind of officiating an entire season very rewarding - I totaled up the games I worked - 115 - all high school games. I would feel a little better if I had worked a girls sectional final or a boys sectional game, but I wasn't selected to do either. I know I should be happy with what I was selected, but basically, I didn't advance at all this season from the previous season, and that's the disappointing part. I worked my ass off for an entire season, worked all those games, and I didn't advance.

Today should be fairly quick at school. I'll get a journal write in and allow students to express their thoughts on the Ukraine situation or anything else they want to express. Then they can wrestle with Thoreau and transcendentalism.

6:37 a.m. - Overnight Russia launched attacks on Ukraine...not good.

My game last night went fine, but then I stayed to watch "a little" of the second game. The game went 7 overtimes...my goodness. I got home late, but it was worth it. Just when you think you have seen everything, you haven't.

I have the night off tonight before getting my final game tomorrow night. Then Saturday I have a softball clinic. No rest for the wicked. The good news is that after that Amber and I are going out with the old basketball officiating crew to a Jeff Dunham show in Moline. That should be a fun night.

Today...survive and move on...get to tonight...grade some essays...hope Russia doesn't start WWIII

6:31 a.m. - Last night's game went fine...I was a little nervous at first, but that's okay. There was a big crowd, and Geneseo and Washington were two very good teams. That's a wrap for the girls season, and now there are just two boys games remaining. I got home late, so I'm a little tired, but I'll make it. Today, should be a fairly quick day, but then I'll head to Wethersfield.

5:55 a.m. - And it's 2-22-22 today...that seems a little weird to me. Not weird is that it is Tuesday, and it's always nice to start a week on a Tuesday. It's also FFA Week, so students have some fun on this week. Yesterday afternoon I did get some papers assessed, and I did make it to my meeting at church. Amber made it home safely, but she did say the flight was a little bumpy.

The weather has turned colder than it was over the weekend. There's even some rain in the forecast for this morning that could turn a little icy. The weather guy says we aren't supposed to get that until later this morning...had that icy mix come in earlier, we might be looking at a delay.

I did not get all the essays scored, but I got a start. I'll get more of them scored today. Then tonight is a long trip to work a girls sectional game. I did find out yesterday that I didn't get a boys sectional game, which is disappointing. I think I need to just accept that I won't ever be a state finals official in basketball. I don't think I have the years left in my knee to make it happen.

Yesterday, Russia decided it will be sending "peacekeepers" into two provinces of Ukraine. Yup, the Olympics is over, and now "peacekeepers" are going to travel across Russian borders into a neighboring country. This doesn't look good.

7:31 a.m. - No school today...Happy Presidents' Day. Yesterday I was pretty busy actually - church service, visit with my parents, got the car cleaned and put back together for another week of officiating, visited the casino, talked with Cole on the phone, and watched a documentary on Lincoln before going to bed. The only thing I didn't get accomplished was getting to visit with Chase.

Today, Amber will be coming home, and there is a meeting at RUMC that I may be able to attend. I need to score those essays, get a lesson plan prepared for tomorrow, and I'd like to go have a cup of coffee with Darren before he heads back to his house in Missouri. Maybe I can still find a way to reach Chase too.

In international news, the Olympics are over, and the world is now focused on whether or not Russia will now invade Ukraine. The United States is sure launching an information campaign indicating that Russia will make an attack. I hope the United States is wrong, but its position certainly seems like it's trying to "tell on Russia" to try to stop its leaders from ordering an invasion.

1:05 p.m. - I got in a walk, then I went and visited Darren and Mom and Dad and Peyton and had a cup of coffee before Darren headed back to Missouri. Before then I got some laundry done and washed some dishes. Then I went to Milan and got Amber's prescription before heading back home. Amber should be arriving sometime around 4:30. I do have a meeting at the church to attend. I think I will try to score some papers now, but I may be taking a nap today too.

7:38 a.m. - The laundry is going - getting officiating clothes cleaned and ready to go for next week. I've got a cup of coffee, and I'm going through my morning "computer readiness for the day" routine. The cat occasionally talks to me, but Amber is still in Nevada. I've got an ice pack on the back of my knee, and I watched a little of the top stories of the news with Willie on the Sunday Today Show. Today should be a good day...may even get a little ski-walk outside as temps are supposed to be in the 50's before another week of snow and ice are forecasted.

In and around the ski-walk will be perhaps a church service. If I find out where Uncle Bill is at, I might pay him a visit. I will also visit mom and dad at the farm. Finally, I hope to get some time to visit with Chase. Maybe we'll do something together if he's available.

No school tomorrow, which is awesome. Maybe I'll start scoring some essays tonight and then continue on them tomorrow.

7:46 a.m. - Whew...that was not an easy drive home last night. The game was fine; the team that should have won did, and the ending was decided early in the fourth quarter. I took a different route home and battled blowing snow, but I'm glad I went the route I did because the route I took to get there would have been worse. I finally cleared the blowing snow when I got to I180, and I thought I was home free, then around Annawan, there were snow squalls....say what? So my trip home from Annawan almost to the Bally's casino was a struggle too. I made it, though, and it was just me and the cats with Amber in the warm temperatures of Laughlin, NV. She did say they had a good flight and walked around a bit; unfortunately, she hasn't won any jackpots yet.

I have a game today at 1 p.m., and it should be another quarterfinal lopsided affair. After that, the "crew" is going to grab some grub and my guess is a little "pub" too. I'm really glad we are going to get one more game together to have a season ending celebration.

I got information on the 3A girls sectional I'll be working at LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday night. The game is between Washington and Geneseo, and that should be a good one! New gym, different crew of officials, and a Sectional semi-final...that's the type of energy that makes the grind of the entire officiating season worthwhile.

I have some essays to score, but that's not going to happen today. My goal is to get them scored before returning to school on Tuesday.

I took my softball test yesterday, and I didn't score high enough. I'll have to take that again, dang it. Also, I entered my softball schedule below on my blog. It's going to be a long Spring, but I have blocked out weekends to get the camper out and enjoy some outdoors. I know I could work Fridays and Saturdays at umpiring, and I know working more games would potentially get me more ratings and to 15%, but I am looking forward to getting the Eagle out...even for just some weekend trips.

6:55 a.m. - The snowstorm didn't materialize in our area, but it apparently did down south because my game at Varna was postponed until tonight. That news was welcomed. This morning I drove Amber and Kristi to the airport, as they are taking a weekend get-a-way trip to Laughlin, Nevada, along with Amber's mom and dad and some other of their friends. So it's a quiet house now, except for Bella the cat talking to me. The start of the day, then, has me getting up early and driving, and the end of the day will have me arriving late and driving, as I won't get home until around 11 p.m. tonight.

6:28 a.m. - The storm that was forecasted for our area missed us, and it even looks like it's going to have less of an impact south of us. There are some schools closed, and the host regional school I'm supposed to work is closed today...that's a good sign, but I have not yet received a message that the game is postponed. I'd really take another night off tonight and then make that drive tomorrow night.

Last night, the Harrison children did arrive, so we played for awhile and had fun and had some supper. I've acquired a head cold somehow, and I didn't sleep the best.

Today, I need to get to school and finish my lesson plan for the day and then start on scoring essays. That won't be fun.

6:26 a.m. - Yesterday wasn't easy...got through it. The games at Farmington went well, and it was nice to carpool with Andrew Teel. He was a play of mine at AlWood when I taught and coached there, and it's always nice to get to visit with former players. The visit definitely made the long drive to Farmington and back much more bearable.

This next statement is one that you won't hear often. I don't really care if we get a snow day tomorrow or not, but what I really want is for Marshall County to get the big snow they are predicting for tonight into tomorrow. If they get that snow, then I won't have to drive to Midland High School tomorrow night, and I can then drive on Friday night. Plus I won't be getting back late on Thursday night and then having to get back to get Amber to the airport on Friday morning. So as long as Marshall County gets the ice and 4-to-8 inches of snow, and the game gets pushed to Friday night, I'm good. If southern Rock Island County gets ice and snow and a few inches of snow that cancels or delays school tomorrow, then that would just be a little icing on the cake.

Today, it's FRW, and it's a night off from officiating. I'll take it...my knee/leg really hurt last night. I just might be looking at the light at the end of the tunnel for basketball officiating, and with a little help with the snow from Mother Nature, this weekend could turn out just fine.

The whole "yellow sheet" thing yesterday apparently helped the administration keep hallways less busy. I hope the hole process has a lasting effect. It's a bit of a pain in the ass for me, but there has been so much pain in the ass things the past couple of years that I'm getting use to a sore ass.

6:33 a.m. - Well, Marshall County is lovely this time of year. The drive to Midland High School was a long one, but most of it is four-lane road, so it's not difficult. Plus, there is a Casey's strategically placed for me on the west side of Henry, Illinois, so that worked out well. Last night I worked with two familiar officials, so that was good. Plus, I got there early and met the two officials I'll work with on Thursday. They are new to me, but I think we'll get along fine. The "veteran" is a 26-year "C"...it was interesting that he asked me how long I've been officiating, which leads me to believe he wasn't exactly happy to be officiating a 1A girls regional. He's from Peoria, so he's probably thinking this game is above him. The other partner is a 15-year official; he's younger than me, and he appears to be an "up-and-comer". He's from Bloomington. His drive is only about an hour. I'm wondering how the hell I was assigned a 2-hour drive...wonder if I did something wrong to piss somebody off.

Yesterday was a half day at school for an "in-service day", which means the day seemed longer than a normal day. Part of the staff meeting involved coming up with a solution for frequent flyer restroom users...I just listened. It's hard to come up with solutions fro any problems that exist for immature teenagers that really don't care about school. I had hoped during the "school portion" of the day that more English III students would have finished a rough draft of their essays - and that folks was just wishful thinking.

Today will be challenging.

6:19 a.m. And so it begins...this will be a wacky week. Today is Valentine's Day and a half-day at school and a day that features a two-hour drive to officiate a basketball game. Tomorrow a day at school and then drive 90 min. to work two basketball games. Wednesday, so far, will be a night off, and a potential rain/snow mix is supposed to be coming into our area Wednesday night. Thursday, features rain/snow and then another two-hour drive. Early Friday before school, I have to take Amber to the airport, and then Friday night so far...no officiating. And then Saturday, my "regular crew" gets to work a boys quarterfinal regional game at Monmouth United at 1 p.m. In the meantime at school, we are going to try to get in an essay and then switch units over to "modern" authors. Yep...it's going to be a wacky week.

Yesterday, we played with the Harrison kids or a bit, I struggled watching the Illini try to blow a basketball game against Northwestern, and then we went to Jack and Rhonda's to watch the Super Bowl. We had a nice time, and the game was a good one.

8:04 a.m. - I survived a couple of very lopsided games yesterday, and I got to see Carmen and her fiance. Yes, I said fiance, as I can now report that she is going to get married this spring to Tyler. They are very happy together, and I'm excited for them. Today the Harrison children are going to visit, and then we are headed to Jack and Rhonda's for Super Bowl viewing. This coming week is going to feature a lot of driving, but I may also get a couple of nights off. I'm driving to Varna on Monday and Thursday and Farmington on Tuesday. Saturday, I'm headed somewhere, but I'm not sure where yet. Wednesday and Friday may be nights off. I did find out yesterday I'm on the lead crew for a regional at Wethersfield, which is exciting. Now I would really like to get a boys sectional game somewhere, even if it's on a trail crew game.

7:20 a.m. - The Super Bowl is tomorrow. I have two girls regional games today. I survived yesterday with trying my best to offer assistance for the essay assignment to the English III students. I survived yesterday's girls basketball game at Davenport North - the last Iowa game of the season (as of today).

8:35 a.m. - I received a lead regional boys assignment....that's good news. My good friend Jason did not get a lead...that's not good news.

6:20 a.m. - Another Friday has arrived; apparently my cat Bella needs extra attention this morning. I wonder what that means. Yesterday was as expected...group projects mostly with half-assed effort from the students, absences that I know were more related to not being prepared than an actual reason for an absence, and just in general poor quality. Oh well, I gave an effort to have a group project assignment. Last night's games were both wide margin games, but working with Colin Mix was good. I did receive a Sectional assignment from the IHSA, but it wasn't the assignment I was hoping for. Maybe I'll get a boys regional and then call it a season. It would be nice to get a boys sectional, but I don't see that happening either. On the other hand, I have almost made it through the season, and while i know I have gained my weight back, I did survive it, and we did get a new crew with a year of experience. Now I really need to focus on slimming down again.

Today I'm assigning what will likely be the final SAT essay of the school year. I'm trying to plan it, so I can get back grades fairly quickly. I'm then going to get the research paper in just prior to the training path presenter series, which will give me that time to score the research papers. With the pandemic mess, the research paper is something I haven't done for a couple of years. I want to get back to that...well, I don't really want to get back to that, but I need to do it.

This Friday should go fairly quickly today, leading to another wide margin game tonight. Then I have a couple of regional games tomorrow - one at 1 p.m. and one at 5 p.m.

Thursday, February 10

6:29 a.m. - I had a real nice time playing with grandchildren last night - a good ole fashioned birthday party for Brooklyn and Luke but with Rosie, Tucker, and Brinley also in attendance - presents, cake, food, pictures....ALL THE GOOD STUFF! I needed a night like that.

Today it's presentation day...already this morning I've woken up to student questions...nevermind that the assignment was issued last week. One thing that is wearing me down is these juniors eventually realizing that poor time management and immaturity and absences from class really does lead to negative consequences. It's a battle of keeping my patience and emotions in check.

After a night off, I'm back to officiating...heading to Port Byron with Marcus to work Riverdale and Bureau Valley girls. Our third is Colin Mix, and I haven't seen him in awhile. He's a good dude and official, so it will be nice seeing him.

I heard from my last training path presenter I wanted to line up. Gone are the electricians; in are the plumbers/pipefitters. I still have to see what I can work out with ISAC, but if that falls through, it's not the end of the world.

Wednesday, February 9

5:46 a.m. - Yesterday was deflating. I think the end of my teaching position at RHS is nearing sooner than later. This school year has really been a series of deflations all along; officiating basketball with a new crew and family has kept me going through these winter months. Last night's officiating gig at West Central went better than expected, which was nice, and tonight I have a night off to be at home and celebrate some grandchild birthdays. Plus, last night I got to see Carmen again, which was nice.

Today is Free Read Wednesday, so maybe some enjoyment reading and a night off from officiating spent instead with grandchildren will be just the medicine for my condition. I'll get through it.

Uncle Bill is in the hospital, and that weighed on my mind yesterday too. He has been in poor health for awhile, and my mom took him to the hospital yesterday. He's having some heart issues, and it may be the beginning of a downhill slide for him.

Yesterday, I had a student tell me he was intentionally doing nothing in class and then planned to take credit recovery. I know there is an interest in school districts to find alternate pathways for students to complete course credit after failures, but when the pathway motivates a student to intentionally do nothing during the semester, I question the value of my existence. What the hell are we doing as an educational system if we have a system to permits a student to just waste his/her/my/other students' time and energy? And what if that earned credit recovery appears to be the same course I teach on that student's transcript? And if students are just allowed to miss school whenever/however they want and then permitted to make up work, what are we teaching? I honestly just feel like an overpaid teenage daycare teacher...I feel like many folks just want a place for their students to go - unless they are taking a vacation or playing softball or volleyball or football somewhere during the school week - and have the teachers provide a few little easy activities that are then scored with a bright shiny "A" to make sure the children all have beautiful GPA's. And then through those easy activities, parents want to make sure their students aren't getting any schooling that might involve "bad books" or topics that are critical of white people. And then I here on the news that some schools are looking into cameras for every rooms so parents can see what is being taught and schools can provide transparency. What in the hell is all of this leading to? Well, like I said above...maybe my end is sooner than later. Maybe I just don't have the patience and trust and love and energy anymore.

On the other hand, maybe I just need to stop feeling sorry for myself, collect my paycheck and stop fretting over all this stuff. If the school district want to continue to make me a highly paid teenage daycare provider, why should I worry about it? In fact, maybe I should instead be thankful and appreciative that I get paid a lot of money to do what I do? Maybe I just need to roll with it...not care if we continue to decrease the value of an education, not care if we are turning out more and more underskilled immature arrogant teenagers in the world and let someone else deal with them.

Ugh.
