8:40 a.m. - Yesterday hurt...three games and last night's game at UTHS featured a last minute come-from-behind win by UT.  Today is recovery day again...pretty much like last Sunday.  I'm going to try to get some things done around the house.  Plus I'm going to pay a visit to my parents, and I think my brother is in town, so I hope to see him.  Later today, we are heading to Amber's parents for her dad's birthday.  Two more weeks of basketball left, and then life will slow down a little.

6:00 a.m. - I learned news of someone dying earlier this week that is a bit of a "gut-puncher".  When I took a teaching job at AlWood now several years ago, I was middle-aged and hoping to rebuild a coaching career, so I took a teaching and coaching job at AlWood and proceeded to start building a program the only way I know how - build a youth program.  And we did all the right things - camps, a weekend youth league, a youth league board, travel teams.  But one coach can't do all of that himself.  He can spend hours and hours at the gym, but he (or she) still has to have a few people that will put in the same level of time and energy and frustration.  One of those was a man named Todd Greenman, and his wife Brandy worked in the office at the middle-high school as an administrative assistant.  She was also one of those few that helped me.  Todd passed away from complications of a recent diagnosis of colon cancer.  I'm sure the news of the cancer was devastating, but this week he was to start chemo in what I presume was an attempt to prolong his life as much as possible.  While I don't know the details, I can only assume that the chemo was something his body rejected, and the treatment went wrong.  After I left AlWood and started officiating, Todd was on the bench for his son's team, and he often worked the scorer's table.  He was also a local insurance agent with an office right there in town in Woodhull.  He was passionate about his boys and his wife, and he was passionate about basketball but hard on officials during games.  I find it "gut-punching" to look back on life and remember the folks who were so instrumental in helping me accomplish things that need to be done, and then losing them.  I hope I'm one of those people for someone else in my life.  I hope when I go, I made that kind of an impact on someone else's efforts to do something that needed to be done.

Friday, February 26

6:28 p.m. - Today is going to be a mess a school.  It's presentation day, and I'm not exactly sure how it's all going to work.  Having students present with chromebooks and webcams and projectors and virtual learners....ugh....confusion, student stress...it all comes together today.  We will learn as we go and do our best to make it worst the best we can.  That has pretty much been the 20-21 school year in a nutshell anyway.  Last night we had the grandchildren over - Kenzie's three and Kourtney's one.  I was able to hold Luke for awhile...he napped and I dosed off here and there.  There isn't much better than filling your belly with a good supper and holding a sleeping newborn and dosing yourself.  Life was good.  I'm always enthralled at holding those little ones...just amazing how fast it all goes.  I guess that's something an old person would say.  Tonight we officiate Sherrard and Orion - a good old fashioned rivalry game!  My knee needed a break from officiating last night, so hopefully I'll be a little better off tonight.  Did I mention it's pay day AND one of our tax refund deposits came in...whoop, whoop!  It's nice to see the bank account so fat, but I still have the mortgage payment and that recent truck repair check to have come through, so my balance will be back to normal weakness levels very soon.  On the other hand, I am getting a bit of a savings nest built up...not much by normal standards of folks my age, but more than I've ever been able to save up.  And the House of Representatives is set to vote on a stimulus package today...I'm not sure if Amber and I will qualify for any additional government stimulus dollars, though.

Wednesday, February 24th

"There's something about this place.  You just sort of forget the rest of the world exists." - from Devils Within by S.F. Henson.

This morning I picked up my truck from Slayden's.  The new tires and shocks weren't cheap, but driving the truck home before school started with the sun coming up ... man, was it nice.  The different tires are much quieter, and the new new shocks definitely smooth the ride.  I got to thinking of camping all over again, and then when I was reading my book, that little segment from the book seemed to accurately describe the effect camping has on me.  Indeed, when you are at the campground, especially where there is no wi-fi available, it's an opportunity to set aside the rest of the world.

Things that I NOW think about with the coronavirus. (2/24)

On the news this morning, there were stories that are discussing good signs of returning to "normal" - stories about safety of seeing loved ones without masks on and stories about infection rates declining by 50% over the past month in Iowa and Illinois.

Monday, February 22, 2021

6:16 a.m. - Yesterday went fairly well...just one little hiccup.  I picked up Chase and we went and had a good breakfast.  If you have never had a biscuits and gravy omelet, I highly recommend the choice at Deerefield Restaurant in Silvis.   After the breakfast we stopped and got some hitch parts I needed for my truck, and then we came back home, so I could have my tutoring session with Arda.  Then we dropped my truck off at Slayden's and went for a walk at Blackhawk State Park.  After that we went to B&B Hardware to pick up a couple of things Chase needed, and I dropped him off back at his home in Sherrard.  I had planned on stopping to see my mom and dad, but I had a little time before mom would be home, so I stopped down at Luli's to kills some time and play some slots.  In the process of leaving, I dropped my license, so after seeing my mom and dad I had to run back there and get it.  On that second visit, I just decided to order something to go, so I ordered a crispy chicken sandwich and some tater tots.  The evening was spent with Amber watching some episodes of Longmire and then reading my book.  I really couldn't have asked for a better day.

Today, students are going to be working on a project for English III.  Other than me explaining the project again, my part is pretty minimal.  I need to get their blogger assignments reviewed and entered into Lumen.  Tonight I'm headed to Riverdale, for a 5:30 start, which is a little unusual for a varsity game, so I'm wondering if there is actually two games or perhaps one of the teams doesn't have a fresh-soph team.  I need to figure an hour to get there, so I'll pretty much be leaving after school.  Good news this morning regarding temperatures....temps this week are suppose to be in the 30's, and that means some of this snow will be melting.

5:07 p.m. - It's been a very nice day today...this morning featured playing with Brinley and Brooklyn, and then today's game at Macomb between Lewistown and Macomb girls went well with no major problems, and now Tucker is here.  I did try to put some air in my tires on the truck just to see if they will hold air.  I think I'm going to be able to get the truck to Slayden's tomorrow without too much trouble, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.  Tonight, I think it's couch potato night - probably watch some episodes of Longmire and soak my leg in some ice water.   Tomorrow I'm going to spend some time with Chase.

7th Period 2-19

Honestly, today, there have been several students share their thoughts on both sides of the argument of the value of sending a craft to Mars, with positives, negatives, and fence riders.  I'm normally not an fan of riding the fence on an issue, but that's where I'm at.  I suppose I'm riding the fence because I don't know what potential benefits are hoped to be obtained from the mission.

For example, if exploration of Mars this way helps better understand climate of a planet that could somehow help us to learn how to better manage our climate and reduce the number of weather disasters, then the 27 billion dollar price tag may be worth the value.  If exploration of Mars is just to see if we can beat another country to achieve the feat, then perhaps the price tag is just too high.

I honestly think I remember some other country doing something with Mars not to long ago...was it Russia or Japan or China or maybe even like Saudi Arabia....I can't remember if it was a satellite or perhaps even another machine on the planet.  Maybe I'll have to look that one up.  With that in mind, I'm not even sure the United States is the first country to do this.  And to be honest, I don't know how many attempts have been tried and failed...maybe the price tag for this accomplishment is beyond 27 billion dollars.

I can say this...I feel happiness for the folks in that command center.  Seeing that joy of accomplishment was uplifting and inspiring.  I bet there were a few parties that evening, right Mr. Peterson?

Taylor, Jacob,

2-19 4th Period

When the animation shows the parachute deployed carrying the rover across the landscape of Mars, I get a funny thought about how some tiny undiscovered Martian and his wife are out on their land growing some unknown crop of some kind ... they are working away and there comes this parachute looking thing and the rover.  What in the heck might be thinking?

"Hey Martian wife, what do you suppose that is?"

"I don't know Martian husband, but it sure is funny looking?  Do you think we should call 911 and report it?"

I know that sounds crazy right?  And I know supposedly there are no life forms on Mars because of what we believe to be the uninhabitable conditions, right?  But the uninhabitable conditions are uninhabitable for humans, so how do we know what is or isn't uninhabitable for any potential creatures on Mars?

Okay, okay...maybe it's a little far fetched, but I'm guessing there are people on Earth who have seen extra terrestrial things flying in the sky or landing on our planet that have been laughed at - perhaps even ridiculed or labeled as just plain nuts.  But if we can place a rover on Mars, isn't it possible or even likely that some other life form could do the same on Earth?

Is it possible or likely that some life form already has and only a select few individuals on our Earth really even know about it?  For example, is Former President Trump on his golf course right now with all that information?

Logan, Aiden Leemans, Daniel,

2-19 3rd Period...

I didn't get any shared responses from second period, but I'm guessing I'll have at least a few folks in this class period share their thoughts.  As I mentioned, I hope I'm not stepping on the thunder of a teacher in science classess today.  Do we have earth-space science classes, or is it just basically biology, chemistry, physics, and human anatomy?  I haven't heard any student yet tell me that this was a topic in their science class, so maybe I'm okay.

I thought this topic was perhaps a little lighter than the other topics, and it's relevant because it happened yesterday, and you will likely hear about the data that Perserverance is going to be sending back to Earth in upcoming days.

Someone first period reported that the trip for Perserverance from Earth to Mars was seven months.  I wonder if someone in your lifetime will pilot a seven month trip to Mars and eventually land and step foot on Mars like someone once first did so with the Moon.  That would be remarkable, but I'd like to think that eventually someday it will happen.

Something else that I haven't talked about is that if humans have figured out how to land an vehicle of some sort on Mars, it should be conceivable that another group of folks from another planet from another galaxy should be able to figure out how to land a rover on Earth, right?  I have trouble believing that we are the only life form in existence that could do that.  Or maybe it's already happened?

Cade, Tyler, Damonte, Anton, Wyatt, Kaleb

2nd Period 2-29

I enjoy seeing the spontaneous joy of the folks in the command center after the successful landing of the rover.  It's unimaginable to me what many of those folks must have been going through - the nervousness, the lack of sleep, the investment of so much thinking and effort.  I mean just imagine of one little thing goes wrong...the parachute doesn't deploy, a cable breaks, the landing spot is wrong and it crashes into something.  What an awful picture it would have been in the control room to see failure.  I heard on the news this morning that a helicopter of some sort is going to be utilized to travel by air as well as the rover itself traveling on the planet, so that will be interesting.

I would say last period most students who shared and responded to this topic were generally supportive, but I would not fault anyone for saying we should postpone spending so much in money and time and effort until we get things figured out for everyone on earth.  Heck, we are in masks trying to get through a school year and trying to get as many folks vaccinated as we can before the dang U.K virus or South African virus or Brazillian virus become the dominate strains and we determine if of if not the vaccines are going to be effective.

So if you are in the camp of saying that we shouldn't explore other worlds until this world is okay, that's entirely understandable.

2-19 1st Period

So is all that time and effort and money on the Perserverance mission to Mars worth it?  I'm not a fan of playing the fence, but I have mixed emotions about this one.  What I don't know and what isn't shared in those video clips is how the United States or perhaps the world benefits from this mission?  Determining value is being able to way the benefits versus the consequences right?  It's true that the money spent on all that project and personnel is like likely a staggering figure - dollars that could be spent on other worthy projects.  On the other hand, what if this space exploration somehow benefits people in ways that I don't understand.  Maybe some students tackling this one will be able to share some benefits, because I'm sure they are some aren't there?  At some point, our planet ends, right?  We know that because of the exploration that science has completed with other planets - they are stars that just don't last forever.  Understandably, my generation nor your generation is expecting our planet to end anytime soon, but at some point the population of this planet will have to be relocated, right?  Perhaps this exploration mission to Mars is a step towards improved space travel and exploration.  Perhaps determining how or if life on Mars can exist is important for future exploration to even more distant planets and galaxies.

I suppose the argument, though, can be made that those things are too far off in the future to be concerned about now, when we have much closer problems that are affecting humanity.  Somehow we can get a rover to Mars, but we can't get mass vaccination sites up and running fast enough to take care of all Americans?

6:23 a.m. - It's a mixed morning today...feeling very blessed that my right leg is holding up through all this officiating and still able to earn some extra money to help out the savings account.  The combination of cancelled games due to weather and COVID along with consistent at-home treatment things I think has kept me going.  My years of officiating basketball are winding down...to much pride and enjoyment just yet to call it quits.  While I'm feeling blessed about that, I'm troubled by recent events with a family member; I don't really want to discuss the details here, but it's apparent as I get older and older that as much as we might try to love and assist and care for family or friends or anyone else, ultimately everyone has to make her or his own life decisions.  Realizing that doesn't make the situation any better, though.

So it's FRIDAY!  I work with a couple of different officials tonight at United High School.  The last time I was there last week the United spectators had several unsportsmanlike individuals that were a cause of frustration.  Maybe tonight will be different.  The games will be challenging; Wethersfield has the best player in the conference, but United may be the best team in the conference.  Tomorrow, I travel to Macomb for a girls game.  It's an afternoon game, so I'll have the night available.  I think Brinley and Brooklyn are spending the night tonight, so it will be fun to see the girls this weekend.  At some point, I have to figure out how to get the truck down to Slayden's for new tires and shocks.  The poor truck is in my driveway with two flat tires, but I haven't messed with it because it's been so dang cold.  With temps forecasted to be in the 20's this weekend, I plan to try to air up the tires to see if I can at least keep air in them for 10 minutes to get to Andalusia.

6:22 a.m. -   Kevin Phelps says the cold temperature right now is an all time low for this date - yikes!  The temp sits at -14 degrees, and that's without the wind.  Despite the cold, we are heading back to school, however.  Last night I survived three high school games in one night.  The paycheck was good, and the games went fine...I'm still not moving how I would like, but I intentionally kept myself slow to survive the evening.  Tonight I'm headed to United for a girls night - 2 games.  At school this afternoon, I think I have some kind of technology training thing...not really sure about it, but it was something Mr. Lehtola sent out, and I agreed to participate.

Tuesday, Feb. 16th

6:06 a.m. - School was cancelled today.  I think we received more snow and wind than was forecasted because a lot of other schools cancelled as well, but mostly to the south.  So I've been up this morning changing lesson plans around, and now I'm not sure whether or not I'll be officiating at Geneseo tonight.  I'll definitely be working on clearing snow from the driveway again today, and there isn't a whole lot of space to put it anymore.

Monday, February 15th - President's Day

12:26 p.m. - No school today...Thank you to all former and current presidents for your sacrifice.  My agenda has been active.  I went over to Davenport to pick up  my shin guards and Kenzie's slippers.  On the trip I also picked up a couple of items from HyVee from Amber, filled up the gas tank in the HHR, and stopped by Slaydens to schedule my truck for new tires and shocks.  After getting back home, I've completed some schoolwork things and some other little items like writing out some checks to make payments and getting mail ready to ship out.  My truck currently has a flat tire, but I'm not dealing with it today because it's just too dang cold.  I'm suppose to be officiating tonight at Monmouth-Roseville, but I'm guessing that it will be cancelled because of the cold temps...and there it was - a notification that tonight's game is cancelled.  So now, I'm going to go downstairs and get a workout in to try and work my knee a little.  I'll have to wait to pick up a couple of things at the farm store in Monmouth until I head that direction a little later in the week.

Sunday, Feb. 14 - Happy Valentine's Day

7:28 a.m. - Yesterday, Former President Donald Trump was acquitted of impeachment.  Immediately afterwards, the leading Senator of the Republican Party said he was responsible for the riot at the Capitol, but he was one of the Republicans that voted not guilty because he didn't believe a former president could/should be impeached according to the Constitution.  I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I'm not.  I hope in some way Former President Trump becomes irrelevant.  Last night Amber and I went out to have supper with two other couples.  The place wasn't really all that great, but the food was good.  Even though it was bitter cold, it was still nice to get out.  Today we are going to see the new baby, and that's about the extent of our plans.  Maybe I'll see if Amber would like to go to the casino for Valentine's Day.  It was so nice today to wake up and not have this be the last day of the weekend.  We have no school tomorrow, and that's wonderful.

Saturday, February 13, 2021

9:10 a,m. - Man, it's cold outside!  I did, though, get the driveway cleared of last night's snow and wind.  Carmen spent the night after we went to West Central - me to officiate; her to take a tour and talk to the principal and others about a possible teaching position.  The weather coming back wasn't so good, but we took it slow and made it.  This morning I think we will go visit my folks and check on them, and in the process, I'll make my trip to the bank and the mailbox.  Today may feature an additional trip to see the new baby.  And a final trip might be to head out for a drink and visit with some friends.

Holy Spirit...
Help me have...

    a humble heart, that I may hear;
    a heart of love, that I may serve;
a heart of faith, that I may abide in the spirit.
