Wednesday, July 31

5:46 a.m. -  More showers and thunderstorms this morning.  The dang grass is growing at too good of a clip.

Yesterday was a good day.  I met the new music teacher, and I met with Mrs. Robinson, and I met the lead kitchen cook, and I met with Mrs. Lum, and I went to CBI Bank to get authorized to oversee the activity accounts, and I got those dang boxes of workbook materials to return ready to go with labels on them.  In the middle of that, I got the HHR back from Slayden's and left the GMC with them to get that work done.  Then, I had a meeting to attend with the BOE discussing thoughts on the new elementary building proposal, which I felt better about than the last meeting.  After getting home I watched the Olympics and spent a little time with Knox, as Rosie and Tucker spent the night here.  (Pat and Kourtney picked up Knox on their way home.)  So yesterday was busy and effective.

What will today bring?  That's a great question.  I'm going to continue down the "to-do" list and hopefully head down to Fort Madison and see Caleb (and Carmen and Tyler).

    Tuesday, July 30

6:29 am. -  It's pay day!  That's always a good Tuesday!  The weather sure is yucky, though.  It's hot; it's humid; it's going to storm off-and-on for the next three days.  Is this the Amazon Rainforest?

Yesterday was a decent day.   I continued to knock off some items off the to-do list at Illinois City Elementary.  Today I'm going to meet the new music teacher and in the early afternoon I have a meeting with the district business office director to get some of those "financial things" done.  Later today there is a BOE meeting I have to attend.  I guess today should go by fairly quickly.

      Monday, July 29

6:25 a.m. - Well, I guess it's a good thing I put so much time and effort to reclaiming the yard this past weekend because we received a lot of rain last night.  I'm not sure what that means for the neighbors' yards downstream, as I had a lot of grass and weeds on top of the ground that may have made a downward passage in their yards.  I see outside we do have standing water, but hopefully that water will drain sooner than later.   Yesterday I assembled the new fire ring, which was something that I have needed to do; I also worked on the hot tub and worked on getting it inflated more.

Today, I'm headed back to work, but I really would like to get the HHR back and get the GMC for it's needed service.  If I can get the car back, I can make arrangements to visit with the Bizarri kids and see baby Caleb again.

        Sunday, July 28

6:51 a.m. - Yesterday was yard day extraordinaire.  I'm still not finished with getting the yard back into shape like it was before we left for our vacation, and technically I only checked off one to-do item off the "other things" list, but that was a big one-liner.  Getting all the weeds in the swamp and two ditches was a big job.  I'm glad I got it done, though, because this morning the rains have arrived as forecasted.  And other than helping Amber move a bed, the rest of the day was spent trying to recover, which basically meant laying around and watching coverage of the Olympics.

Speaking of Olympics, I watched team handball, which looked pretty fun, and I watched field hockey, which didn't seem to have as much scoring as I thought it might.  I also watched some kind of judo or karate event which seemed interesting as well.  I like to watch the sports that we don't normally see on television.

Today I have some little things I could accomplish.  I guess the first thing I have to do is help Amber install a ring doorbell.  Why do we need such a thing?  That's a very good question.

          Saturday, July 27

6:37 a.m. - Since I couldn't be in the building at Illinois City Elementary yesterday, I tried to get other things done.  I did manage to get an investment account started for Caleb, and I got the pool cleaned.  I also spent some time with the Harrison grandchildren when they were here.  I did go with Amber on a date night to the casino which was nice, and then when we got home I watched the opening ceremonies to the Paris Summer Olympics.  I guess I'm not just very culturally aware of France, because the presentation just confused me.

Today is a day to spend weed wacking.  It's going to be a long, challenging day.  Hopefully when I'm done, the yard will look a little better.  I'm not running the 50th running of the Bix 7.  I really wish I could, and I could probably limp my way through walking it, but that's not a fun walk and by the time I finished there wouldn't be any goodies left at the post race party.  I'd also like to swing down to Fort Madison and see Caleb this weekend, but my car isn't ready yet, and the brakes on the truck aren't very good, so I won't be making that trip.

            Friday, July 26

6:49 a.m. - We got to go see Caleb James last night in Fort Madison!  We drove down and Carmen and Tyler picked up some Casey's pizza, and Amber, mom, and I took turns holding the little guy.  Tyler was wiped out from a lack of sleep and working the whole day, so we didn't stay too long...we were back home by about 9 p.m., but it was awesome to get to hold him, and he was awake and in a good mood the entire time we were there!  I'm probably going to get down there again this weekend sometime and spend some additional time with him.

Yesterday, the report on the HHR is two bad front tires because the tie-rods went bad...cha-ching.  I asked Trent to look at the brakes too because I think new pads are needed, so there's a nice summer bill for auto repair.  I know the HHR has got a lot of miles on her, but I just don't want to buy something new right now.  And I know for the last few years, I've said to myself just to try to get another year out of her, but I think I'm going to say it again.  Hopefully, the HHR can get fixed up today, so I can swap the truck and get the brakes and exhaust manifold project fixed on that vehicle.  Isn't it just the case when I get a little extra money come my way that something comes up to consume that extra money?  I guess the man above provideth, but provideth doesn't mean a lot of extra!

I'm not quite sure what today is going to look like.  The Harrison kids are going to be hear early this morning, so I need to factor that in.  I can't go to Illinois City Elementary today because the building is closed due to waxing of the main hallway.  I have some little things I could work on, or I could run up to the high school and take my chromebook and do a little work there.  Maybe I'll just see the Harrison kids a bit and then figure out the rest of the day from there.

6:16 a.m. - Yesterday was a good day.  I was able to continue to whittle down more "to-do" things at school (Illinois City Elementary), and then I was able to get home and get the yard mowed.  Well, I was able to mow most of the yard.  I have the swamp that needs knocked down, but that's going to take the old sickle mower, and I won't be able to do that until this weekend.  This weekend will also feature some cleaning work on the pool, some spraying of weeds, and working on the bushes a bit.  Basically, this weekend will be dedicated to recapturing the yard from our 16 days of vacation.

Today I just want to get through the day and get down to Fort Madison and see little Caleb.  Amber, my mom, and I are headed down as soon as we can after I'm finished with the day at the office.

                Wednesday, July 24

7:17 a.m.  Yesterday I survived the day at the office and then at a meeting at the high school for the proposal of the new centralized elementary building.  That project seems to be taking a different direction than I perceived at the beginning, but we'll see where it goes.  At the office, I continue to work on becoming more and more familiar with the programs and policies and processes of the building.  All the while, I know that stuff is only a small percentage of being prepared for staff and students when that time finally rolls around.

Today it's back to the office and then at home I need to get some yardwork done.

                  Tuesday, July 23

6:34 a.m. - Yesterday was back to reality day, but I survived it.  I worked on tackling a host of little emails and little things for school at Illinois City Elementary.  Before school, I also got a few things done around the house.  In the evening, I went to the farm and visited with mom and dad and gave her a few little goodies from our trip to thank her for taking care of Bella while we were gone.

I'm still struggling with my knees and coming off of the meloxicam, but I'm seeing signs of improvement.  I think I'll hop in the hot tub this morning before going to school and also try to get a stretch in downstairs to help me continue to recover.

Today in the evening I apparently have a meeting at the high school that I have to attend, so I'll go to that, and hopefully it won't be a long meeting.

I've got a lot of yardwork to complete, but that might have to get done later in the week.  It's possible that tomorrow after school may offer some time as well if the rains will move out and the ground can get dried out.  I also need to get both my vehicles serviced, so it looks like I'll be supporting Slayden's Auto Repair this month.

                    Monday, July 22

6:04 a.m. - We're back!  I'm writing from good ole Sweet Home Edgington!  We got back home yesterday around 2:30 p.m., and we unloaded everything from the camper.  I wasn't feeling the greatest and would eventually have to just lay down early in bed.  I've been trying to ween myself off my arthritis medicine, and the combination of doing that with all the driving we have been doing finally got to me.  That meloxicam is awesome in reducing inflammation in the joints, but when I'm not umpiring or officiating, I try to stay off of it.  After completing our hiking on our vacation, I decided to go ahead and stop taking it.  The withdrawal symptoms are definitely real.  I was freezing yesterday, and my knees wouldn't bend.  And then I'd go from freezing to sweating.  I couldn't get comfortable overnight to get a lot of sleep in, but I did get a little sleep, and the chills and sweats have seemed to subsided.  I think I'm over the worst of it.

So today, it's back to life and back to work.  I'd really like to see Carmen and Tyler and baby Caleb, but that may have to wait until tomorrow evening.  Carmen sent me a message and said should has something going about 5:45 p.m., so perhaps tomorrow evening will be a better time.  I definitely have a lot to do today, so my plan is just to try to tackle emails and tasks one at a time and chip away at them.

Our vacation return went a little more smoothly than Mr. Strachan's.  His party has been stranded in Atlanta for the weekend and may not get a flight until Monday evening.  The whole problem is that IT meltdown that occurred across the country; his airport in Atlanta was especially hard it - lots of flight cancellations.

                      July 20, 2024

5:45 a.m.  - Today is our last full day of summer camping trip 2024.  I know it sounds crazy, but I'm already thinking about trip 2015, and I'm thinking Michigan, particularly Michigan's Upper Peninsula via Wisconsin.  I'll have to do some thinking and researching on that one.  There is a national park in Michigan...sort of.  It's actually an island in Lake Superior only accessible by plane or boat.  We won't be camping there.

Our campground that is the last stop is called the Flying Goose.  It's really big, and it's really nice - asphalt roads to get around the campground, a nice office, nice bathhouse, beautiful lake, big trees, etc...  Amber is struggling, but hopefully we will make a good day out of today.  She's just tired and ready to be home.  She misses her family - especially the grandchildren.  I miss those folks too, but I'd still like to make the most of the last day of our vacation.

Last night, I actually did some computer work - a couple of things in the IHSA for OFFICIATING and a couple of things for school.  Our options for television stations were limited, but that was okay.  There will be plenty of time for television upon returning to Edgington!

                        OFFICIATING/UMPIRING UPCOMING

                        July 19, 2024

6:20 a.m. -   Yesterday, we had a long day, and I think Amber is over vacation.  I think she's ready to go home.

We joined Michael and Karrigan yesterday and spent most of the day with them.  They drove us to Lake Itasca and the Mississippi River headwaters.  Of course I took my shoes off and walked in it, and of course I went around in the visitor center to learn about a little history.  I was intrigued to see who "discovered" the headwaters.  Kind of like Columbus discovering America, there is someone that is credited with discovering the headwaters.  Of course the indigenous people weren't all that impressed.  Lake Itasca State Park is another feature in this area that we could have spent more time at.

After viewing the headwaters, we drove to Bemidji, and we got a picture with Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.  That was fun to see that, and then we went into town and did some shopping and had a nice lunch.  After that, we went in to Walker and did some more "shopping".  Not surprisingly, we have a lot of gifts to dish out once we arrive at home.

Today, it's head south.  It's going to be a long day of driving, and we have just two days left of vacation.  I hope Amber can make it.

7:00 a.m. update - I almost forgot.  Yesterday I finished the last book of the Proenneke journals.  I read journals of his covering decades of his life, and yesterday was the last day.  Basically, his age finally caught up to him.  Physically, he was just unable to maintain his lifestyle in the wilderness.  I was curious about his final years, and there was an addition to his journal supplied by the author of his books to explain his final years.  After no longer living at his cabin year round, he basically "retired" to Port Alsworth, Alaska continuing to do odd jobs and living with a variety of folks who helped look after him.  It sounds like he did not return to Primrose, Iowa, to live the end of his life, and nor did he spend his final years in California with his brother.  In reading his final journal entries, he seemed to know his health was declining, but he didn't express any regrets or issues in his fleeting health.  He dedicated himself to recording his adventures and daily duties and tasks, and it's an interesting look at one person's life over time.  He definitely changed; his environment definitely changed.  And I'm not sure that all the changes were necessarily good changes.  And in sort of a bad ironic twist, his dedication of sharing his life may have contributed to too much human activity in the Twin Lakes region.

                          July 18 (sort of)

                          It's actually 10:39 p.m. on the 17th as I write this.

Today was a long, but fun day.  We left early from North Dakota, and the drive was about four and a half hours - not an easy drive either once we crossed over from North Dakota to Minnesota.  There is a highway that is closed that would have made the drive much easier and shorter; instead, we ended up driving on a lot of blacktop county roads.  We did finally make it just after noon.  Our site isn't the greatest regarding ease of set up, but the site is beautiful.  It just needs to be more level to make it easier to drop.  It still isn't as level as I would like it, but it is what it is.

Amber and I went on a little bike ride, and we discovered there are a lot of bike trails in the area.  This is probably another place that we could spend a week instead of just two nights, but I guess that's better than a couple of the other places we have stayed on our journey.  I guess I'd rather be wanting to have stayed longer than not.

After the bike ride, we drove into Walker, and it's a nice little town; of course we found a casino, and fortunately we didn't both lose.  In fact, we both won a little.  After that, Michael and Karrigan met us at our campsite and we walked over to the bar and grill and had supper.  My French dip was awesome, but I picked up the tab, so while I didn't lose at the casino, I ended up spending money anyway.  After supper we walked back to the camper and sat by the fire and visited for awhile until everyone got tired.

Apparently in our campground there is a "neighborhood bear" that like to see if it can get into the garbage can.  I'd really like to see it, but apparently he/she arrives around midnight or after, and I just don't want to stay up that long.

Tomorrow (today) Karrigan and Michael are coming over for breakfast in the morning, and then we are headed to do some tourist stuff.  We are going to Lake Itasca to see where the Mississippi River begins, and we are going to see Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox.  Then I think we are going to Bemidji (sp?) where I'm sure we will have to do some "shopping".  I'm looking forward to being the guest of Michael and Karrigan and letting them drive around.  (At least I think we are riding with them....I hope so.)  I really like it here.  I could see us coming back here.

Now it's 5:16 a.m. on the 18th - I woke up around 4:15 a.m., and I couldn't get back to sleep, so I might as well get up and going.  I think this is the coldest morning we have had on our trip so far.  I even turned the electric heater fireplace on this morning along with the dehumidifier.  When it's cold and heat is running inside, the dehumidifier needs to also be turned on to prevent condensation on the windows.  It's the type of morning that reminds me of Loud Thunder in September or October.  That's one thing about this particular campsite in Minnesota...reminds me of being in the woods at Loud Thunder.  I looked up our next drive we have tomorrow....it's a long one - about five hours (that's long for me).  I'm glad we are making one more stop before the final leg home.  An 8-hour plus drive to finish up the 2024 summer vacation tour would have been a lot to ask on my old eyes.

I was just looking at a map of the start of the Mississippi River that we are going to be visiting.  How did I never know that the Mississippi travels north and east before actually turning south to be the river I always thought of going through the Quad Cities?  I guess I just thought it started at the top of Minnesota and worked its way on down as the eastern border of Minnesota - not so!  Here I am 58 years old now, and I'm just realizing that...sheesh.

July 17, 2024 - from Jamestown, North Dakota

7:16 a.m.   My last entry was on the day of our boat tour on St. Mary Lake.  The tour was very informative and pretty.  The next day, we took another bus shuttle trip into the park and actually went to the west side after catching a transfer at Logan Pass.  Wow, it's great to have those shuttles because the west side driving is definitely "mountain driving"  - up and down and switchbacks and "cliff driving".

Now we are back on the road on our route home.  We spent the night in Jamestown, North Dakota, and today we are headed to Minnesota to see Karrigan and Michael on their vacation trip.

July 12 - from St. Mary KOA in St. Mary, Montana

8:29 a.m. - Coming to you from St. Mary KOA via Amber's Starlink technology on a Chromebook. We've been very blessed so far at the sights and activities we have had, as well as traveling.  I hope that continues.  I have been checking a few emails here and there...at least the ones that seem to need a response now versus when we return home.  We have a couple more days here in Glacier National Park, and then we will start making our way back to the Midwest.  Today, we are going to take a boat lake tour on St. Mary Lake.  The weather is as cool as it has been since we started our journey, so perhaps that's a good thing.  This morning we got up early to go to a different entrance point to the park called Many Glacier.  The weather didn't cooperate, but it was still a good trip; we did get to see a bear.

Friday, July 5 - Pull Out Day! (from home)

5:49 a.m. - The launch countdown is set, the Eagle is ready to go, and we are nearing pull-out for summer camping vacation 2024.  I started working on this back in December/January to get reservations, so it's interesting to realize and get set to see what happens.  We don't have to be in any particular hurry, as check-in isn't until 2 p.m., and our drive to our first stop in Jackson, Minnesota is 5-6 hours in length.  It's been awhile for a long trip because last summer we flew to Cancun for Carrie and Tucker's wedding.  It was two seasons ago that we went to the Black Hills of South Dakota.  Yesterday, I did pick up a floor jack, which is something you hope you never have to use but is nice in the event that you do.  So this morning after the Today show and a second cup of coffee, we'll load up the last of the items on the list, do a final check through all the other stuff, and set off.  Of course I'm probably loaded down too much, so hopefully I won't have to go through any weigh stations, and hopefully the truck can take the pull and the weight.  My cash flow isn't great, so I need to somehow get to the next pay day to feel comfortable, so I'll monitor expenditures until the 15th.  That's something I haven't done in awhile, which is to fuel up while hooked up.  It's always a bit of an adventure to get gas pulling a 5th wheel trailer.  We won't be back until the 21st, so adventure awaits!  I hope the weather cooperates - flood waters recede and wildfires stay away.  And I hope I have set a travel plan that avoids driving in mountains.

Yesterday was a bit of a battle with the weather.  I did get my mom's baby blanket to Tyler to start the day, and then I worked on the yard when I returned.  Mother Nature wasn't exactly helpful, and I finished in the midst of some sprinkles.  After that Cole came over for a visit, and we had a nice visit.  We event took a little drive and saw the Illinois City building and took out some water that Kourtney had requested.  After that visit, Amber, Karrigan, and I went back to the Southwell's for a fourth of July party and home fireworks display.  The boys shooting off the fireworks had a few interesting moments, and Darrin Harrison even managed to get a cut on his face.  Everyone survived, though, and it was a real nice family event.  I felt a little out of place, but that's okay.

I talked with Carmen, and she and baby Caleb continue to improve and get stronger.  Caleb still needs to finish his antibiotics treatment, but he and parents are now together in Carmen's room instead of Caleb in the little NICU.  Carmen thought that perhaps today or tomorrow they will all be able to leave the hospital, which is great news.  Carmen and Tyler will feel better when they get home and can sleep in their own beds.

Thursday, July 4 - Happy Independence Day

7:13 a.m. - Yesterday I was able to see Caleb...he's a big one - 10 lbs., 2 ounces, 23 1/4 inches and born at 6:06 a.m. on July 2, 2024.  Carmen and baby are doing better after struggling a bit after delivery due to a pretty hard birth.  On my way, I picked up some Jimmy John's sandwiches and some flowers, and I had the elephant blanket that Amber had purchased for a gift too.   I forgot my mom's blanket, so I'm going to meet Tyler today and take that down to them.  We had a real nice visit, and my heart and brain were comforted because the both are looking good.  Caleb has few tubes hooked up to him, and after receiving a couple of pints of blood on delivery day, Carmen is looking and sounding better.  I didn't hold little Caleb, but I did get to touch his hands and feet and head when I was allowed to accompany Tyler and Carmen in the nursery.  I'm so glad and blessed that all now are doing well, and I appreciate Caleb arriving before we head out on our camping adventure tomorrow.

Speaking of that, I woke up last night after falling to sleep on the couch, and then I couldn't get back to sleep.  There are just too many things to think about with Caleb's arrival, a new job, and our camping trip.  This was supposed to be a simple summer!  It's definitely been an eventful summer instead.

I'm scheduled to mow the yard today, but the weather isn't cooperating.  We are supposed to have a pool party today, but again, the weather isn't cooperating.  One thing I do need to get done is finish packing the camper.  I have clothes and a lot of other stuff to make sure to take with us.  I've got a list, though, so that should help.  It's also been a summer of a lot of lists!

                                    Wednesday, July 3

6:36 a.m. -  My daughter is struggling with her delivery, and I'm worried about her.  I woke up last night and couldn't get back to sleep because I was worried about her.  Eventually I was able to get back to sleep.  The delivery was very rough, and Carmen's strength is weak.  Her son, Caleb, also is needing additional care.  I'm told that both will be fine, but I'm going to head down to West Burlington today and see for myself.  I have tried to be respectful and wait as I was asked, but I'm worried, and I just want to see both of them (and Tyler too).

Rains fell last night, so in anticipation I got home and mowed the back yard and put some chlorine in the pool and went and picked up more chlorine.  I'm glad I got all of that done.  I also did get work done at school.  I met with Mrs. Bollman, got more items off the to-do list, and with some help of a couple of staff member, discarded some stuff out of the teachers' lounge that needed to go.

                                      Tuesday, July 2

6:13 a.m. - Yesterday was the first day of the new job.  I had two meetings in the morning, and then I spent the rest of the day in the ICE office trying to continue down the "to-do" list.  I got some things done, but I also added a bunch of stuff too.  There are a lot of moving parts to this principal thing.

Most importantly, Carmen is having her baby as we speak.  She went to the hospital yesterday afternoon, and I received a message from Tyler that she was getting ready to push about an hour ago.  I haven't received any messages for updates.  They have had a long night.  The last I spoke with her over Facetime was about 9:00 last night.  It's tough being so far away and getting news via text messages; I just hope she and the baby experience a smooth delivery and both are okay.  Carmen has her mom and Tyler with her, so that's good...they will help give her strength.

Today, I hope to hear good news this morning, and then I have a meeting at 9 a.m. with Mrs. Bollman.  After that meeting, I hope to drive down to Burlington and see how everyone is doing.

July 1 - first day of new job

6:34 a.m. - My things to do lists are small here, but my "IC to-do list" is growing and growing.  Yesterday after getting the camper parked and settled, I did have some down time, which was nice.  On the other hand, I also had a lot of little things to do.  I spent much of the night working on the master schedule again.  I've spent too much time on that thing, but maybe we are getting closer to finalization.

Today is my first official day as principal.  I'm starting the day with meetings about MAP testing, MTSS, and reading interventions - not exactly a celebration of a new job, but it is what it is.  I'll suffer through those meetings, probably add more items to the t0-do list, and then head to the office to see what else I can knock out.
