Thursday, June 30

6:10 a.m. - Today is going to be a doozy.  I'm not excited about working five games today.  I'm not excited about the warm temps, even though I do appreciate the breeze that is supposed to be present.  Thank you Mother Nature for that.  Yesterday wasn't much fun...three games, and I had to sit around for a couple of hours between game two and game three.  Plus, the games were all terrible.  I know all the girls need a chance to play, and I know the coaches want to get them games.  I really struggle, though, when it seems like no one really wants to be on the field.

So today...two games in Muscatine and then three in Burlington.  I'm going to get home late; I'm going to be dead tired; it's going to suck.

I received the name of the dumb ass that decided to grab Cole last Sunday while Cole was trying to umpire his game.  Apparently time expired and things escalated to the point where the coach was ejected and then went and grabbed Cole.  He's apparently just an ass...but muscle head dude that apparently wants to throw his weight around.

I still don't have my truck back.  I left my check with them yesterday, but Trent said there were some additional problems that needed some work.  I'm going to give them a call today and try to get an update.

Tomorrow's forecast has some rain, but it looks like temps are going to cool off, and most of the weekend is going to be cooler, which will be nice.  I'm going to keep a camping weekend in mind as I try to get through the day today.  Even though we are just going to Loud Thunder, I'm excited to get the camper out and get to the campground - it will be the official start to my summer break.

Things to do

  • get a haircut
  • pick up officiating shoes
  • HHR oil change
  • get truck back from Slayden's
  • make sure National Passes are in camper/truck
  • put new seals in the pool motor
  • July 6 - 9 a.m. - association meeting

Wednesday, June 29

6:17 a.m. - I voted yesterday and then went to umpire softball at Assumption.  I returned home and then played with the Harrison kids.  After that, Amber and I walked up to the middle of the new I74 bridge to see where there is a clear deck to the bridge.  Before that we went to the Riverhouse and had some supper, which honestly wasn't very good.  Then after the walk we went to the casino....thankfully I didn't lose much.  Today and tomorrow the weather is supposed to be very hot, so of course I have a lot of umpiring - at least three games today and perhaps five games tomorrow.  I'm not real crazy about that idea, but I honestly need the money.

Things to do

  • get a haircut
  • pick up officiating shoes
  • HHR oil change
  • get truck back from Slayden's
  • make sure National Passes are in camper/truck

June 28

6:42 a.m. - I got the pool vacuumed and the weeds sprayed yesterday afternoon after the Harrison grandchildren went home, and that was an accomplishment.  We also decided to take the camper out to Loud Thunder this weekend, and that will be fun.  I also spent over $250 on pool chemicals, which was not fun.  I'm trying to order them online this time and at least try to save a little bit of money.  My financial picture is just not very good right now.  I've tried and tried to avoid umpiring/officiating youth sports, but it just may have to happen.

This week will wrap up Iowa high school softball umpiring, and that's a good thing.  I'm tired and ready for a break from that.  It's voting day today...I need to go do that.

Things to do

  • get truck back from Slayden's
  • make sure National Passes are in camper/truck
  • put new seals in the pool motor - ordered replacement kit

Monday, June 27

8:31 a.m. - Yesterday's clinic at University of Dubuque was amazing and just what we needed.  The evaluators were very helpful, we didn't have to work too much to get good feedback, we saw a presentation from a legendary official - Rick Hartzell, and we spent a good day together thinking about the upcoming shot clock that will be used in Iowa.  IT WAS AWESOME!

Today...we have the Harrison grandchildren who spent the night last night, but I have the day off to recover from basketball officiating, so that's good.  I'm really not sure what today is going to include...I need to get some work done around the house, but I'm not sure what will get done and what won't.  The schedule for upcoming softball and basketball officiating is nearly done...only three days left.  It's been a very, very busy June.

I would like to get my truck today.  (UPDATE) - truck is not ready.  I hope it's ready by Friday because I just booked a camping weekend.

Things to do

Sunday, June 26

5:14 a.m. - It's too early for me to be up on a Sunday, but I'm headed to another officiating camp today in Dubuque with Shawn, Marcus, and Tucker.  I'm really, really tired and really, really sore after yesterday's work.  I think I worked 5 games, but I'm honestly not sure. I know when the last games were cancelled that I didn't mind at all.  I will be glad when today is over, but I hope it is a good day.

Things to do

  • get truck back from Slayden's
  • make sure National Passes are in camper/truck

Saturday, June 25

6:46 a.m. - Yesterday was another long day.  We did get to spend some time with Rosie and Tucker before I had to leave, so that was nice.  Then it was off to the hot gym at Rock Island High School.  I worked four games and then had an officiating clinic to attend.  We did go out to eat after that - just some pizza and a beverage with Shawn and Marcus...it was nice to be together in that setting.  I don't think Amber was too happy about it.

Today....back at officiating again.  I guess it's a good thing I didn't have softball scheduled or we aren't at a campground because there are storms rolling through now, and we've gotten a lot of rain.  I won't have to put any water into the pool today; that's for sure.

Things to do

  • get truck back from Slayden's
  • make sure National Passes are in camper/truck
  • put new seals in the pool motor - ordered replacement kit

Friday, June 24

8:37 a.m. - Today is a mess.  I was supposed to do softball this morning and no basketball in the afternoon; now I have no softball in the morning and perhaps three games this afternoon.  Plus tomorrow is a mess as officials seem to be canceling left and right and the director of officials is scrambling.  I did manage to remember to get my truck to Slayden's...I hope that work doesn't cost too much.  I don't need a big repair bill right now.

Yesterday's softball umpiring was like working a rec league, and the field at DeWitt makes no sense to me at all...basically the whole morning was just weird.  In the afternoon I came home and worked on a little project, talked to my mom and Aunt Mary who were swimming, talked to Amber a little after she arrived home, and then and worked two sophomore games at Rock Island High School.

Things to do

  • make sure National Passes are in camper/truck

Thursday, June 23

6:53 a.m. - I survived yesterday...working basketball is not easy.  I'm not in good enough shape, I'm too fat, and the knee is not healthy.  Today I'm headed to DeWitt, then I'm back working a little basketball at Rock Island.  This morning I discovered that I'm sometimes not a very good communicator and crew leader - I'll get through it.

Tuesday, June 21

6:36 a.m. - After a little nap yesterday afternoon, I managed to trim the bushes AND wack the weeks in the ditch.  I may sound arrogant, but I was very proud of myself.  The temp was in the the 90's, but I had a nice breeze and some shade because I waited for the sun to go down.  I think I finished around 8:30 p.m., but that's okay...I got those jobs done!  Today is a double-double.  Two games this morning in Muscatine, and then I have another two games this evening in North Scott.  It just so happens I have Bettendorf both times.  Seriously, I think I have had Bettendorf seven times within a week.

Monday, June 20th

6:29 a.m. - Yesterday I was able to spend some time with Cole, Carmen, her husband Tyler, my parents, and Amber's parents.  I'm not sure where Chase was, but he did send me a Happy Father's Day message yesterday.  I had a chance to play some cards and play Cole in a couple of games of chess -  I even managed to get a stalemate in one of the games, which for me is a win because he's pretty good.

Today, the hot temperatures return.  I'm at Bettendorf .... again...this time with Jason.  Then I need to get some yard work done.  I'll also be spending some time in the pool to cool off.

5:53 p.m. - Update....Softball went long today....almost two hours for the first game.  And then unexpectedly, Cole appeared.  After the games were over, he and I went to Pizza Ranch for lunch.  I don't get to do that very much with him, so that was really nice.  The temps are still pretty warm, but I think I'm going to head out and do some yard work

Sunday, June 19 - Happy Father's Day

12:49 p.m. - Happy Father's Day Jim Bizarri!  I'm just sitting down to the computer after we got back from our camping trip to Sankoty Lakes for the weekend.  Honestly, the weekend worked out really, really well.  There was a break from the heat, we got a lot of relaxing time but also did some different things like kayak and sit on a beach.  We also used a golf cart at the campground to due some sightseeing including going down to the nearby beach of the Illinois River.  We also went to the casino a couple of times, including a trip yesterday to the Paradice Casino (where Amber won a major on Friday, which was nice).  And then finally, Jack and Rhonda and Amber and I had a supper at the Wooly Bugger, which was a restaurant in the campground.  This "resort" was a little more money than I normally spend on camping weekends, but it was a different experience, and I don't have any regrets.  I'm not sure I'll go back real soon, but it really was a nice weekend.

So today we are going to have some family over for a little Father's Day cookout.  I'm never sure who all might be arriving or might not be arriving, so we'll just visit and enjoy all who attend.  This coming week is going to be a very, very busy week.

2:48 p.m. - I think I'm headed out to the pool, but I got the yard mowed, which was great!  This morning I was camping in Central Illinois; now I've gotten home, unloaded everything, mowed the yard, and it's still not 3:00 p.m. - not a bad day of production!

Thursday, June 16

5:45 a.m. - Yesterday was a long day.  We had the Southwell children overnight, and then I had softball at Bettendorf - twice.  I was scheduled in the morning and then again in the afternoon.  The afternoon went a little quicker, as we only got a half inning into the second game, and the storms moved in.  I'm scheduled to work at Durant this morning, but I'm thinking maybe there will be a rainout.  While I could use the money, getting a jump on this weekend's camping trip to Sankoty Lakes in the Peoria area has a nice ring to it.

Things to do

6:24 a.m. - Yesterday was a busy day.  Rain finally allowed me to mow the yard, and then I cleaned half of the pool.  Then it was off to Carmen's reception to supply the soda and water.  After a stop at Circle K and $50 in ice, we made it to the fairgrounds.  Carmen's and Tyler's party went real well.  I didn't get a chance to talk to Tyler's family, but other than that, the event was great.  Sue did a great job with the decorations and the taco bar, and folks this way were able to see Carmen and Tyler in their happiness.  They even showed a video of their wedding, which was nice for everyone to see.  After that, I stopped at Shawn's and my mom's and returned coolers, and then I unloaded all the extra soda and water back into the garage.  The order for drinks was overestimated, but that's okay...we always can use water and sodas back here at the Bizarri Edgington resort.  After that, I finished the cleaning project in the pool and poured three poly containers of chlorine in to get ready for what will be a pool week this week due to the high heat we are going to be getting.  Needless to say, I slept pretty well last night.

Today....I'll be umpiring, and then I have an RTA meeting.  I'm not sure where the meeting is going to be, but I guess that will get figured out eventually.

Things to do

  • put new seals in the pool motor
  • register for Iowa officiating crap
  • pay middle of month bills
  • get eye drops prescription (and Meloxocam)
  • trim bushes

Sunday, June 12

6:04 a.m. - Yesterday was a grind.  I left the house about 8:45 a.m.  I got back around 7:15 p.m.  I had maybe 15 minutes of a break to eat a sandwich between games two and three.  All four of the games I had went seven innings...all of them were beyond 90 minutes.  All of them were close games.  The first two games I had a partner who was in his first varsity games...he was nervous, and I tried to give a lot of suggestions.  He did great, but in his plate game, there were a couple of calls that were controversial.  I felt bad that one of those was on the last play of the game.  That just doesn't happen very often, but it did yesterday.  He handled himself well, and I think he enjoyed his experience.  Working four varsity games in a row, though....that's a grind.  I'm really tired this morning.

Today, I think the weather is supposed to be good for Carmen and Tyler's reception.  My job is to have the drinks iced down and ready to go for the guests.  I've got the coolers; I've got the drinks; now I just need to transport all of those things to the Mercer County Fairgrounds and pick up some ice along the way.  I wonder how much ice is now-a-days.

  • register for Iowa officiating crap
  • pay middle of month bills
  • get eye drops prescription (and Meloxocam)

Saturday, June 11

7:18 a.m. - After getting home yesterday, the day went downhill.  Amber cut a tire at Kenzie's house.  So the rest of the day and evening was spent with that project.  By around 8 p.m. we had figured out the weird spare tire with her van, gone to Muscatine to get a new tire put on, and installed the new tire and returned the spare.  She then went to pick up the Southwells at the airport, and I went to bed.  I was tired.

Today I thought was supposed to be a great weather day...apparently the rain will return this afternoon.  We may only get in a game, if the event is even held at all.  There are teams coming from a great distance, and we had a lot of rain yesterday.  I would be surprised if the event was just cancelled.  I've got a new umpire to join me today, so I was hoping to at least get a game in for him.  If it does rain, there won't be much to do other than watch the rain.  I suppose I could work on writing checks and paying bills that are middle of the month bills.

Things to do

  • register for Iowa officiating crap
  • pay middle of month bills
  • get eye drops prescription
  • trim bushes

Friday, June 10

5:50 a.m. - Yesterday was a long day - 2 5-inning 9th grade games at Durant...some lunch at Hong Kong Buffet in Muscatine....2 more varsity games in the evening at Muscatine.  I was glad to be done with the day.  I didn't even come home - just found a shady spot at the ballpark in Muscatine and took a little snooze.

Today?  Well, the weather doesn't look great this morning, and I'm supposed to have a couple of games at Bettendorf at 10 a.m., and I'm supposed to do the games by myself.  This is doable, but not preferred.  Clinton is usually terrible, so working the games 1-man isn't going to affect any outcomes.  On the other hand, it's been a long week.  If I could take the day off, wait until the rain clears, and then do some trimming of the pushes along the pool, I'd take that - especially since I have four games tomorrow.

2:42 p.m. - We got through game one with Bettendorf winning 15-0.  We started game two, but the rain started to fall very steady a couple of innings in.  I had to do some "bending" of procedure, but we got all the girls an at-bat before I called it.  I got home and started washing umpiring clothes to get ready for tomorrow, and then I went to mom and dad's and got their coolers and sat and visited for a bit.  I think I'm already for Carmen's event on Sunday.  The only thing I need to do is get some ice, but I want to wait to do that until that day.  Today's a rain day, so I can't work on anything outside, and I don't really want to pay the bills or do any registering.  The eye drops prescription isn't in yet, so that can't get done.  I think I'm going to hang out here at home, maybe read a little from the umpiring publications I purchased, and then take a little snooze until Amber arrives home.

Things to do

  • register for Iowa officiating crap
  • pay middle of month bills
  • get eye drops prescription
  • trim bushes

Thursday, June 9 - Happy Birthday Darren Bizarri

6:16 a.m. - It's a beautiful morning, and it's a double-double day.  On these days, I umpire somewhere in Iowa in the morning - usually 10 a.m., and then I umpire somewhere in the afternoon - usually around 5 p.m.  Today it's Durant in the morning and Muscatine in the afternoon...makes for a long day.

Yesterday was supposed to be umpiring in the morning and officiating basketball in the afternoon.  We only got a few innings in the morning before the rain hit, but we did get a couple of basketball games in the evening.  The knee didn't feel as good as I hoped, but it wasn't terrible either.

In between those assignments, I got some chlorine at the Central Pool, and there was time with the Harrison grandchildren.  Little Luke Jason is looking better after getting his head hurt a couple of days ago.

Things to do

  • June 24 - get GMC scheduled for radiator flush and oil change and inspection
  • get eye drops prescription (and schedule annual eye exam?)
  • trim bushes

Wednesday, June 8

6:47 a.m. - Yesterday's softball work went fine....working 1-man is sometimes interesting, but working at Durant is always fine.  And I'm always impressed with the quality of the field facilities at the Iowa school.  The diamonds are always immaculate.  Today this morning we are at Assumption, and it's one of the nicest facilities in the area.  It's beyond immaculate.  We had rain last night, and I'm still sure that we will play the games today.  Then later today, I'm going to work some basketball at Sherrard.  This will be a chance for Shawn, Tucker, and I to work together.

Yesterday afternoon, I spent some time with Harrison grandchildren in the pool.  After that, Amber took me on a movie date night to see the new Top Gun movie.  We hadn't been to the theaters since before the pandemic, and the movie experience was great.  I highly recommend seeing the movie in the theaters.  I'd definitely go back and watch again.

Things to do

  • get GMC scheduled for radiator flush and oil change and inspection
  • get eye drops prescription (and schedule annual eye exam?)

Tuesday, June 7

7:10 a.m. - Umpires never appreciate arriving to a field for a game with no teams.  Yesterday's game was rained out, but no one called me.  I made a trip to Wilton, then, but my only effort was to get the HHR filled with fuel.  I guess that's not all bad because E85 in Muscatine is $3 a gallon.   It's $3.18 in Aledo at Blick and Blick, and I think I might go ahead and get an account there.  Speaking of Aledo, after my rained out game in the morning, I completed some tasks in Aledo.  I got propane tanks filled - one for the camper and one for the grill.  Also, I picked up the drinks for Carmen's reception.  So once again, rather than working at umpiring and making money, I spent money...ugh.

After the run to Aledo, I came back home to see the Harrison kids, and then later my afternoon umpiring gig was also cancelled.  So there goes more income for the day, but I ended up getting to spend more time with the grandchildren.  Today if I get rained out this morning, I'm going to complete a couple of items on my to-do list.

Things to do

  • get GMC scheduled for radiator flush and oil change and inspection
  • get eye drops prescription (and schedule annual eye exam?)
  • get more chlorine
  • confirm Aug. 22 at Morrison VB with Braeden and get him to respond about Rockridge
  • trim bushes

Monday, June 6

6:50 a.m. - This week marks the first full week of summer break.  It feels great not to have to face those students...I just need to be away for awhile and recharge.  I'm still going to be around high school students, but it will be on the softball diamond, not on the classroom.  And the students I will be with are students I don't know.  Although, maybe I won't have much work today as we had rain overnight and are forecasted to have more rain later today.  A complete day off wouldn't be such a bad thing.  I have two things on my mind - Carmen's reception on Sunday and our next camping trip the on June 16-17-18.  And those things on my mind are near as stressful as end of the school year and state finals softball.

I could use some extra cash .... it's out there, but I'm waiting for checks to arrive from recent softball work I've completed.  Maybe those checks will start arriving this week.

Sunday, June 5

5:57 a.m. On June 2nd - I umpired some JV softball at Muscatine in the morning, got packed up after that, and headed to Peoria.  I found the Louisville Slugger Complex and attended the "celebration" for the IHSA girls softball state finals.  I met the IHSA staff, the UIC, and all the other 11 umpires that had been selected for the event.  We had a sandwich style meal in the dome, and the umpires and coaching staffs and players were all introduced.  It wasn't a long ceremony, which was good.  After that, I headed to the hotel - the Pere Marquette in downtown Peoria.  Finding the hotel and the hotel parking ramp wasn't the easiest, but I figured it out.  Amber decided to drive down and arrived around 9 p.m.  As I was waiting for her to arrive, I had a beverage with the "big wigs", and it was nice to hear their stories and thoughts, and it's never a bad thing to rub elbows with those folks.  Oh, and that evening after the celebration we had a meeting with the umpires to go over expectations and get our assignments for the weekend.  It was nice that I was working with the same two partners each day.  I knew on Thursday night that I would have a 2A semi-final and then work the 1A State Championship the next day.

On June 3rd, I wasn't scheduled to work until 5:30, so Amber and I had some time to run out to Sankoty Lakes where we are going to do some camping on June 16-17-18.  The campground wasn't quite what I expected but it's nice and will be a different place to spend a weekend get-a-way.  After that little adventure, we just went back to the hotel and relaxed before heading to the ballpark around 2 p.m. because Rockridge played the game before mine.  We watched the game together before I had to leave to go get ready.  (Rockridge ended up winning and advancing.)  My two partners were great.  They had both been to the state tournament previously, and I had worked with one of them in basketball this past season.  So the three of us seemed comfortable right away.  The game we had was between Freeburg and Tolono Unity, and it was a great game through the early innings.  Freeburg pulled away on a couple of big home runs, and the score ended 9-0.  Our debriefing for our crew went well, as we were told by our UIC that we had performed well.  Honestly, though, there wasn't a lot that happened for us to screw up.  I had third base, and I really didn't have many calls...I mostly just ran around a lot.  I was somewhat nervous, but that was to be expected.  Once the game got going, I was too busy thinking and preparing for each pitch to really be nervous about much.  I have to admit, felt honored to be part of it all.  Honestly, the most nervewracking thing was just waiting to take the field.  Jason Danner was there helping on field, and that was cool to have him there with me.

Yesterday, June 4th I got to the park around 10 a.m.  It was pretty much the same routine as the previous day, except this time I was on first base.  First base can be a bit more complicated.  Our game was a 1-0 extra inning exciting game between Casey Westfield and Illini Bluffs.  Once again, our crew performed well, but once again, we really didn't have anything crazy happen in our game.  After the game we exited the winning side's gate and got our debriefing.  The debriefing again was positive, which was great.  What was really special about this day was that Cole was there.  He cut his vacation a little short just to drive down to Peoria and watch the event, and it was great to have him there.  We spend the day together, which was great because I hadn't seen him for a couple of weeks.  The weekend ended with the 2A championship which featured Freeburg and Rockridge.  Rockridge ended up winning 5-4 in 12 innings in the longest 2A championship in the event's history.  It was a thrilling game, and it was a shame to see someone have to lose.  Our game that day went extra innings, but I think we went 9 innings.  It was a bit difficult to sit in the stands and listen to the crowd yell at the umpires...it's amazing to me that it doesn't really matter if it's a 10-u youth game on a Saturday morning in Moline or a 2A high school championship game...the stupid comments are still the same.

On the way home, Cole and I got a pizza, and I got home around 9 p.m.  That was my weekend.  Wow....what a weekend.  It all happened pretty fast, but it was so much fun to be a part of, and I feel so blessed to have had such a positive experience.

Thursday, June 2

5:45 a.m. - Today is the day...the state finals.  I've been working for this weekend for a long time.  I was hoping it would be basketball, but I've been working at softball for a long time too.  I got more information on the weekend yesterday - a little late, but better than never I guess.  I have to be in Peoria at 5:45.  I'm getting myself good and tired by working some softball this morning....I'm hoping I will be able to sleep better tonight.  I'll have some nervousness; plus, I don't sleep well in hotels.

Yesterday went great, and I hope today goes smoothly too....I might actually spread some weed and feed on the yard today.

Wednesday, June 1

8:14 a.m. - Today we have the Harrison kids.  Amber went to an exercise class, so I was flying grandparent solo while she was gone.  No major catastrophes occurred.  I think they will be leaving sometime mid-morning, and then the Karrigan dogs will be arriving.  I have softball tonight over in Bettendorf.  So ya, it's the first day of summer break.

3:08 p.m. -  Got the yard mowed; got my haircut; got gas and nearly cried - $117 to fill up my truck and the mower gas can.  Good grief.
