Saturday, December 31

8:57 a.m. This will be another short one...I've been sick since about 11 p.m. last night...frequent trips to the bathroom...no fun.  Yesterday's game had a bad situation that we got incorrect, but those things happen.  I'll send a message to the coaches and explain and apologize...it's all I can do.  I hope to go back to bed and start to feel better - not sure if it's the flu or the food I ate after the games yesterday.

6:40 a.m. - We had the Southwell grandchildren spend the night last night, so this one will be short.  Yesterday's game went fine...ate well at the hospitality room...grabbed our checks.  I did finish reading my book, so I accomplished that this break.  Today will be the last day of officiating for the weekend - two games at Saint Bede Academy.

6:14 a.m. - The trip to Saint Bede went fine yesterday.  It's a long 90-minute drive there, but I had never been in that gym, so it's always a good day to take an adventure to a new gym.  The first game wasn't pretty, but it's hard to work a game with one or two teams lacking good basketball skills.  The second game was better, then we got a little complimentary lunch and headed home.  I even beat Amber home!  (She worked at SnowStar.)  I spent the evening watching a little television, and then we went to bed.

Today we once again head to Erie.  We only have one game, and it shouldn't be very good, but it may be another ugly one.  Most importantly, we are going to pick up the checks we earned for working four games there, and we are going to enjoy their hospitality room and awesome food.  I'm not sure what is on tap for tonight...maybe grandchildren...maybe spend some time with Cole...

7:32 a.m. - Yesterday went fine...one of the games was ugly because the play was just ugly.  Unfortunately even the best efforts of officiating can't necessarily help ugly play.  The hospitality room was great, so all of the ugly play was out of mind as I ate the chicken lasagna and potato and ham soup.  

Today, we are headed to Saint Bede for its girls tournament.  The games don't look so great, but it's a new gym, so it will be an adventure.

6:35 a.m.- This is going to be a short one.  Yesterday's games went fine.I came home to two grandchildren because one went home sick.  That was just a preview.  Prior to the main show, Carmen, Tyler, Chase, and Cole came over and we watched a movie.  I probably won't see Carmen anymore over break, so it was nice to see her.  The "feature show" was Luke getting sick, which started about 9 p.m. and still is on-going.  He has the flu, and now I'm really hoping I don't get sick.

Monday, December 26

7:13 a.m. - We had another full day yesterday on Christmas day.  I went and had coffee and visited with Darren and Mom and Dad in the morning before Darren left at 10 a.m. to head back to Missouri.  Then Amber and I drove to Jack and Rhonda's where Jack had grilled steaks...yum... Steak, baked potato, and baked beans on Christmas...I like it.  Then we played some euchre and Rhonda and I beat Jack and Adam!  (I hardly ever win against Adam.)  Then the five of us headed to the casino and played some slots for awhile, and just in time for Christmas, I wasn't a loser!  We ended the day by watching Christmas Story 2, and it's definitely not as good as the first, but it wasn't a total waste of time either.  Oh and I did spend a little time on the treadmill in the morning, even though it won't be enough to feel completely out of shape today.

So today begins our holiday officiating week!  We have five days of basketball and hospitality rooms, even though there may not be a hospitality room today.  We just have to survive the week and then there is another three days off before the long January stretch and back to school.

UPDATE - 9:24 a.m. - It's been a busy morning, but a good one.  I didn't get in a stretch, but I may still have time for that before Shawn picks me up.  I did clear the driveway of our light snow; I burned the wrapping paper - a Christmas tradition; and I broke down some boxes for recycle purposes.  Now it's time to shower and get ready for the day.

Sunday, December 25 - Merry Christmas

8:06 a.m. - Merry Christmas!  Yesterday was everything we had hoped...started with Amber's girls and their families arriving around 8:00 a.m. along with Jack and Rhonda.  We had breakfast and opened gifts.  Then around 11 a.m., my kids arrived along with Tyler and they had some food and we opened gifts.  Then around 12:30 we headed to the farm to see Grandma Cathy before they had to head back to Carmen and Tyler's church for its Christmas Eve program.  They left the farm around 1:30, and so I headed back home and watched the Bears lose...again.  Then Amber and I went back to the farm to have some oyster soup and sandwiches and open gifts - that started about 5 p.m. and we got home around 7:30 p.m.  What a day!

Today won't be as eventful...I think I'm going to go have a cup of coffee with Darren before he heads back home down in Missouri.  We'll probably go to Jack and Rhonda's for a bit, and we'll probably head to the casino for a bit.  

I do need to exercise a little and eat less today...I think I've gained 20 lbs in three days without officiating!

Saturday, December 24 - Happy Birthday Mom!

6:35 a.m. - Yesterday we ended up having lunch at El Barrill with Darren, so that was nice.  Other than that, we pretty much stayed hunkered down out of the cold and wind and blowing snow.  The wind is still strong outside this morning, but it's not as bad as yesterday.  Today is my mom's birthday.  My mom is one of the strongest and most compassionate people I know.  

This morning the Kiddoo girls and their families will be arriving.  I don't know yet about the Bizarri kids since Carmen and Tyler couldn't travel from Fort Madison yesterday because of the storm.  Later, Amber and I will head to the farm and have some oyster soup with my mom and dad - not sure who else will be there.

Ho, ho, ho!  The most wonderful time of the year!

7:19 a.m. - Baby, it's cold outside!  Tomorrow worked out well...except for Amber needing to go to Farm-n-Fleet, but even that went okay.  I got all my Christmas wrapping finished...now I hope all the flannels I got every one fit.  Because we didn't get much snow, I don't think I'll need to do much shoveling, but I'll probably check the driveway once the comes up a little bit more.  Carmen and Tyler were considering a visit today, but the winds are still pretty bad...not sure if they will make it or not.  Hopefully things will start to die down before tomorrow Christmas Eve.  And now the forecast is calling for temps near 50 degrees towards the end of the week...crazy!

I think I stayed within my budget for Xmas shopping; now I hope the gifts are well-liked.

UPDATE - 9:06 a.m. - The GMC won't start.  It's just too dang cold out.  I went out to clear the driveway, and fortunately there wasn't much to clear.  I had to come in a couple of times just to warm up....the wind chill is really brutal.  I did manage to go to the backyard and fill up the bird feeder - can't believe those birds still want to eat in this kind of weather.  I think I've been assigned the task of washing the showers...this is a job I get because I'm taller.  I hate the job, but I do it.  I'm not sure if Carmen and Tyler will be coming today...it's pretty nasty out.

6:48 a.m. - Games for today have been cancelled....that helps give me some time to wrap gifts.  The storm is not supposed to drop a lot of snow...that helps with clearing the driveway.  I got all my Xmas shopping done last night, I think....that helps ease my mind a little.  Now I just have to get into the Christmas spirit and wrap, wrap, wrap.  Before shopping last night, Amber and I did go to the casino and had some supper and played some slots.

6:44 a.m. - I am not sleeping very well.  Today I need a good day.  Last night's game was awful.  That's my report for today.  Since November 1, I've worked 75 games...varsity boys, varsity girls, f/s boys and girls, and junior high.  If this snowstorms cancels games tomorrow I won't be disappointed.

6:03 a.m. - Yesterday was first day of semester exams...not fun...long day.  Today will be even longer because I have three exam sessions today.  Last night we officiated at Monmouth-Roseville....not fun...long game.  Tonight we go to Davenport North...will be even longer, Davenport West isn't very good.  In other news, a winter storm is getting closer and I need to get some Christmas shopping done.  Uh-oh.

5:00 a.m. - I've been up since 3:30 a.m....just too much to think about I guess.  We had Massey Christmas last night; I had a nice visit with my parents yesterday afternoon; I did some Christmas shopping; and we went to church service and watched the children's program.  

Plus, I've got potatoes boiling now to have some mashed potatoes for the potluck at school today.

And there still is officiating and wrapping gifts and finishing some Christmas shopping...oh and a major winter storm is possible?  And of course there are semester exams and scoring the exams and getting grades turned in...

Yes...there is a lot going on in my brain at the moment.

7:39 a.m. - I missed yesterday's post.  I woke up to the Harrison girls who had spent the night, so there wasn't any time for computer work.  

Friday - The day went as expected, which was good.  The half day with students rolled by with a surprising number of students actually in attendance.  Then the professional development experiences was as expected - brutal, but I was able to stay awake.  And then the game at Moline vs. Quincy was everything we had hoped - big crowd, tough teams, great atmosphere.

Yesterday - I was up early to watch some cartoons with Brinley and Brooklyn and make them some breakfast.  We also played downstairs while Gigi ran some errands and went to the store.  Then I had to pick up Shawn and Marcus for a long day.  We had two games in Mendota, and then we had to drive to Abingdon for a game at a shootout.  I think drive time was about six hours yesterday; I was really tired.  None of our games weren't very good games, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing.  After last night's game in Abingdon, we ate in the hospitality room and headed home.  I was really sleepy, so I think I turned in at 9:30 after having a weekend ending nog and rum before bed.

6:01 a.m - So when you are scheduled to work the last place game in a tournament - in this case the determining game of 7th place out of 8 teams...well, you just have to be ready to have basketball that's just not very good.  And most spectators, despite the shortcomings of the teams they are watching, just don't understand that the officials can't make bad basketball look better.  In the end, we got through it.  And after the second game, which wasn't much better, we had good food waiting for us, which was SO nice.  

And at school....the semester is winding down to a close as I would hope.  Today is a half day, and my guess is that most students will not be in attendance, which is great.  But then we have in-service, which won't be great.  Because with 9 days until Christmas, professional development isn't exactly on the minds of teachers.  

Later today, though, is our trip to Wharton Fieldhouse for the game between Quincy and Moline.  I'm just tired enough now from another long week, that I'm not feeling the same level of nervousness that I might feel.  I'm excited for Shawn and Marcus that they get to work a game at Wharton, as it is the best place for basketball in the Quad Cities.  The place is just "old-school" and it has so much history.
