Friday, October 29

5:42 a.m. - The crummy weather continues, but hopefully the rain will move aside by this afternoon.  The Eagle is loaded by not hooked up.  That process isn't a long process, so the goal is to get the camper rolling before 4:00 p.m.  I'm pretty sure we are headed to West Lake campground because I can't get three nights in at Loud Thunder.  Last night I stopped in to visit with mom and dad, and we had a nice visit.  Today, I'm feeling a little better than yesterday, but I'm still really cold.  I'm trying to price out water heaters for the house, and I'm hoping I can get it all done for under $1,500.  Yesterday at school I had a couple students challenge me for dropping their participation grade because they hadn't done anything for the writing assignment.  I'm hoping to talk with one of the students today, but the other one I don't want any part of.  A third student is officially off the "hope list" - he talks a good game, but I'm now convinced he's just a jackwagon and always will be.  That's okay - even jackwagons need an education whether they think so or not.

Thursday, October 28

5:57 a.m. - I'm feeling pretty crappy this morning...my body is working hard to create antibodies for that dang COVID.  The achiness and chills started last night after school.  I didn't sleep very well, and as I'm typing this up I'm cold and have a headache and my joints ache.  I'll probably end up taking some Tylenol before heading off to school this morning.  Last night I wanted to get some work done for school, but all the grandchildren were here, and then I started to feel bad.  Needless to say, I didn't get any work done.  Hopefully I can accomplish that work at school this morning.  The weather is looking crummy today, and the temps are starting to decline in the weekend forecast.  I'm uncertain whether I'll take the Eagle out this weekend or just call it quits for the season and put it into storage.

Wednesday, October 27

5:59 a.m. - Rockridge lost its regional volleyball match last night, and that was a bummer.  Before that I went into Milan to get some kitty litter, and I decided while I was there to get a COVID booster shot.  So far I'm feeling okay without any side effects.  The weather forecast continues to look good for camping weekend at Loud Thunder, so that's positive.  I decided to take Monday off as a personal day; I think I will just take the camper from the campground right to its winter storage home on Monday.  Today is Free Read Wednesday after yesterday's distribution of the writing assignment.  For many of the students, they got right to work.  I would say about 20% of the students just wasted time - can lead a horse to water, I guess.

Tuesday, October 26

5:35 a.m. - I officiated another junior high girls basketball game last night, and the knee felt a little better.  The plan is to get another walk in this morning and maybe walk again today after school. I might go to the volleyball match over at Sherrard tonight; I guess that depends on Amber and her schedule.

Monday, October 25

6:08 a.m. - There will be no walk outside this morning.  The very cruddy weather continues - cold, windy, rainy...yuck!  Yesterday I helped a the church breakfast, which didn't go very well.  There was plenty of food and plenty of help, but the cold rain kept a lot of folks from coming out.  I felt bad for the workers and planners of the event, but I also was so impressed with their efforts.  They are such good people, and it was good for me to be around them.  At the end of my shift, I grabbed a to-go order and continued my camping in the backyard experience.  I turned the heater on in the Eagle, along with the electric heater.  I also turned on the television.  I then commenced to eating my to-go order in the comfort of the camper while listening and watching the rain.  I suppose some folks would consider my actions quite weird, but I enjoyed my quiet, peaceful time.  Amber had gone shopping and didn't return until mid-afternoon, and in that time I had relaxed in the rocker, watched some football, and even took a nap up in the bedroom, which felt great!  I don't have the water or sewer hooked up, so I did have to dodge raindrops occasionally, but it was all good.  After Amber got home, she even "camped" with me for a bit and told me about her day.  Later in the afternoon, we went down to the new Bally's Casino to celebrate Karrigan earning her RN license.  I didn't do very well at first, but I finished in a flurry, which was nice.  We also had a little supper at the little cafe in the casino.  Then we came home, and I worked on entering Khan Academy grades for the students and assembled my lesson plans for my Monday.  Oh, I also made a phone call to Cole in Atlanta to see how he was doing, and it was nice to see him via video call.

Today I have one more junior high girls basketball game at Rockridge, and then my schedule looks clear of officiating for a week.  I'm keeping an eye on the weather for this coming weekend.  I'd like to get the Eagle out to Loud Thunder one last time.  The weather forecast this morning suggested that another rain system is coming in Thursday, so I'll have to see how that goes.  I was considering a personal day on Friday to give myself a three day weekend, but I need the weather outlook to be a little better.

Sunday, October 24

6:09 a.m. - While watching the morning weather segment this morning, I became very glad that we didn't challenge Mother Nature today.  My decision not to go camping this weekend was a good one.  The radar is lit up right now with all sorts of colors indicating heavy rain and thunderstorms, and it's supposed to last all day into tomorrow.  So today I'll head off to help with the church breakfast and take a raincoat with me.  Then I may just sit in the camper in the rain and watch the Bears game.  Then I think Amber and I are going to the casino with Jack and Rhonda.  In between there somewhere I need to get some schoolwork done.

Yesterday I got a few things done, but mostly I spent time with family - all the grandkids, the step-daughters, the in-laws, and my mom and Chase.  It was so nice to get to see Chase.  We roasted some hot dogs on the fire in the backyard, and I made him some of my famous smores.

Saturday, October 23

5:06 a.m. - Normally there should be a very good reason that I'm up at 5 a.m. on a Saturday morning.  Nope, I just woke up and decided I probably wasn't going to go back to sleep, so I might as well get up and get the cats some breakfast and start my day.  Yesterday, in the mail the license plate for the new trailer came in, which was exciting.  It be more exciting if the camper and me were at a campground somewhere, but the forecast is still for an awful lot of rain tomorrow, so I just probably am better off staying home and seeing if I can get one more weekend in next weekend.  Today, I'm going to start my day with a nice long ski-walk, and I've got my brain set on trying to get some weed-wacking done before all the rain arrives tomorrow.  This morning I'm thinking I'm going to work on an email I'm going to send out to area athletic directors and assignors regarding plans for volleyball in 22-23.

Friday, October 22

6:08 a.m.  - We are not going to be taking the camper out this weekend because Mother Nature has other plans than good camping weather.  I did take a peek at next weekend, and so far the extended forecast looks good, so perhaps one last weekend next weekend is in the cards.  We got good news yesterday that Karrigan is now officially a nurse - she passed her boards.  I'm very happy for her because that was putting a lot of stress on her life.  I'm very happy for me because last night was the final night of volleyball officiating.  I was ready be done; I guess more importantly I'm ready for a little time off to get in mental and physical shape for the upcoming basketball season.  And the basketball season is going to be a grind.  At school today, I'm hoping to have a good discussion regarding the literature passage we are looking at.  "Sinners In the Hands of An Angry God" is challenging for students because it requires a lot of creative and critical thinking.  Honestly, I don't know how many current English III students are going to be able to handle it.  Maybe a good discussion will help, but discussing things is also something students really don't want to participate in.  I'm going to give it a go before dispensing out the assignment.  So today could be fun and rewarding; it could be frustrating and a test of my patience.

Something I just thought of...maybe tonight or tomorrow night I'll try camping in my backyard.  The pool is put to bed; I could just bring the fire pit up closer to the house, and we could sit by the fire and spend the night in the camper as if we were at the campground.  I'll have to think that over.  Something else I might do when I get home from school is try a little weed wacking of the swamp.

Thursday, October 21

6:03 a.m. -  One more volleyball match later today, which is good.  Rain on Sunday is going to wash out camping plans this weekend, which is bad.  Today is Thursday, which is good.  Yesterday was professional development, which is bad.  Our topic was to explore what teachers could do to enhance student engagement.  As I wrote on my evaluation of the activity, I'm tired of hearing that teachers need to do more to promote student engagement.  It's about time for others to promote student engagement.  At least I partnered up with Ms. Peterson, so that helped pass the time along.

Wednesday, October 20, 2021

Wednesday, October 20

5:48 a.m. - I guess I was just tired?  Yesterday after school, I had a notion to go for a walk or workout downstairs or do some type of exercise.  So came home and sat for a bit just to sit, and then we grilled some hamburgers and chicken breasts on the grill since it was such a nice day.  Then Karrigan came over, and while we were visiting I laid down on the floor and took a little post-supper snooze.  I woke up and made my way to the recliner and started watching the Blackhawks, still thinking I would go for a little evening walk.  Needless to say I fell to sleep again.  Then when I woke up around nine o'clock, I headed to bed but thought for sure I would have trouble sleeping through the night. I figured I had my book, so I would read if I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep.  Nope...slept right through the night.  Geez.  So NOW I'm going to watch a little news to catch the weather and THEN go out with the walking sticks and get some fresh air and a little walk.

Today at school, we have an 11:30 dismissal day...apparently the subject is mental health.  I'm probably going to struggle with today.  I'm probably going to hear about all the troubles that students have and how we teachers should be more sensitive and more understanding.  I'm probably going to hear about how the pandemic has had such a negative impact on students.  At some point I'm probably going to be just more frustrated.  Life is hard; it involves hard work; it involves perseverance; it involves tough decisions; it involves doing things we don't always want to do.  So while I may be frustrated today with my professional development, it's basically a "day off", so I'll take it.

Later today it's back to officiating - this time basketball but just up at Rockridge with junior high girls.

Tuesday, October 19

5:59 a.m. - Just one more volleyball day left (I think).  Last night's match was a good old "barn-burner".  It was a rivalry match with a full house of spectators.  The home team ended up winning in three sets.  I don't have a lot of fun officiating volleyball, but that was fun.  This morning the weather forecast for the rest of the week is looking favorable for a little camping get-a-way this weekend.  I'm thinking Scott County Park.  And the extended forecast is also calling for warmer than normal temps, so next weekend at Loud Thunder looks doable too.  Today at school we start to transition to our next unit which involves a new literature piece and a writing assignment.  I think I might design the final product a little differently, but I'm still tossing it around in my brain.

I get an evening off tonight (I think).  I told Amber I'd like to put something on the grill one last time since the weather is supposed to be very nice.  After tonight, I'll probably load the grill up and return it to the garage for winter storage.

6:28 p.m. - The morning after "pool closing day" is a bit of relief feeling.  It's the feeling of accomplishing something that had been on the mind for weeks.  This week is another one of those same feelings as the end of volleyball officiating arrives.  Tonight I go to Annawan, and Thursday I go back to Sherrard.  I've been to both places this season, so the comfort level is good.  Tonight's match could be a good one, but Thursday at Sherrard should be a blowout.  This week at school, I hope to finish up presentations today and transition to our first writing assignment.  I'm mulling around in my head the idea of writing the paper in class in good old-fashioned paper and pen, but I haven't quite figured out the procedure.  Either that, or I need to come up with a different prompt somehow that decreases the chances of plagiarism.  I think I almost need to go with the Google Doc first, so I can stalk and assist, and then go with the handwritten assignment.  Now my next important decision of the morning...what shall I wear to school today?

Sunday, October 17

8:45 a.m. - I missed a post for yesterday, but it was a blur of a day anyway - officiated all day at Sherrard volleyball tourney, but I needed the money.  Then it was off to watch over the Harrison children at a wedding and a reception.  Then we brought the children home with us.  Today, is a big day for accomplishing a lot.  The main goal is winterizing the pool, but mowing the yard and spraying weed killer and completing schoolwork grading are also on the agenda if possible.  I have one more week of volleyball officiating, and then I can put that gear away and focus on basketball.  Winter is approaching.

9:36 p.m.  Winterizing the pool was accomplished, but so too was mowing the yard, spraying the weed killer (mostly) in the landscaping, and completing schoolwork grading (mostly).  Rhonda and Jack once again were a big help this year in helping close the pool...couldn't have accomplished it without them.  I tried to take the empty anti-freeze jugs to Milan recycle, but apparently that doesn't exist anymore.  So with all of that still in the back of my truck I proceeded to drive to my Aunt Mary's house for a little visit with my mom's brothers and sisters, along with Kenny and Steve.  They were sitting by a nice bonfire on a beautiful night.  I wish I could have stayed longer and maybe had some beverages with them, but as they are all retired, I am not.  So I came home and worked on entering some schoolwork scores.  I think I'll see if I can catch the end of the football game before turning in.  It's been a very, very busy weekend, but it was also a very, very productive weekend.  There wasn't much fun, but maybe I can accomplish some fun next weekend if the weather cooperates, and we can get the camper out somewhere.

Friday, October 15

5:47 a.m. - Today is Friday, and even though it's been a 4-day week, it hasn't felt that way.  Today is also pay day, which is always a good thing.  Yesterday's presentation day was a bit of a #%$#show, but that was to be expected.  Today, we will get through a bunch more of them, even though we probably won't finish everyone.  Honestly, the presentations that have occurred already have been impressive.  Last night I had my last volleyball officiating experience of the season with Braeden.  We have a good time together and ride back-and-forth together to games - one more volleyball match down.

Thursday, October 14

5:45 a.m. - I am woefully out of shape.  I had a junior high girls basketball game to officiate, and I struggled.  The gym was hot and humid, and I am fat and out of shape.  Those aren't good combinations.  In other news, I was disappointed to see the blatant disregard for using masks by the spectators.  It was painfully obvious that there were adults and their families that wanted to make statement by not wearing masks.  I just hope that these statements don't prolong the pandemic or potentially cause a mutation to occur.  And there was no one from the school district enforcing the mask usage of the spectators, which was also disappointing.  We teachers are told to enforce the mask usage, but the administration apparently doesn't hold itself to the same expectations at indoor sporting events.

Today is presentation day at school, so naturally I woke up to emails from students asking for additional time and "shared" messages versus the students using the "shared folder".  All of this despite the students having over a week to complete the assignment and consistent reminder/direction to use the shared folder.

Wednesday, October 13

5:46 a.m. - Many of the English III students are completing the PSAT today.  Hopefully, I will have a better appreciation from students regarding the things I'm trying to accomplish after today's experience.  So today will have some extra time that will allow me the opportunity to work on our next unit in class, which will be the unit surrounding "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."  Tonight, I'm officiating junior high girls basketball at Rockridge.  I'll get a little exercise, and I won't have to drive very far.

The fact that it's already Wednesday is comforting.

Tuesday, October 12

5:29 a.m. - I didn't sleep well last night.  I ate too much food yesterday, and I guess the camping weekend was still on my mind. Plus, I really didn't get a whole lot of exercise.  Now that the weekend of "relaxing" is over, I need to get my brain fixed on getting in some kind of physical shape for the upcoming basketball season.  I'm going to have a lot of games with a new crew, and it's going to be physically challenging.

Today, should be relatively quiet.  The students (and me) will have a three-day sluggish start to a Tuesday, and there is PSAT testing tomorrow.  After that, we have our first presentations of the year on the schedule for Thursday and hopefully finish up on Friday.

Tonight it's back to officiating volleyball...ugh. The good thing about officiating this week is despite going 4-out-of-the-next-5 days, I am with a partner friend I know and appreciate.

Monday, October 11 - Happy Indigenous People Day

6:25 p.m.

Today..."pull-out" day at Loud Thunder.  Amber and I took our time, so we had breakfast with Shawn and then started cleaning up the camper and then brought it home.  He was smarter than me and hooked up when it wasn't raining, but I didn't want to wake up Amber.  So I hooked up and pulled out in a steady rain.  When I got the trailer home, I decided to make lemonade out of lemons, so I took my scrub brush to the camper in the rain.  I was already wet, and there were bugs all over the nose, so why not wash it off.  Then just about when I got that done and finished unloading the camper, the rain eased off and we backed it up into it's spot next to the house.  After that project was finished, the Harrison kids arrived and Jack arrived to help with installation of the kitchen light we needed to replace.  We had to think a little bit about it, but eventually, we got the dang thing installed.  After that, the Harrison kids were the project, and then the Southwell kids arrived.  Once they left we had some supper, and then I worked on school work.  I think I should be wrapped up with all my "stuff" for the day, so I can concentrate on watching the Bears game tonight on television.

Yesterday (Sunday at the campground)....we had rain in the morning, but then the rest of the day was dry and even turned out pretty nice.  In the morning, my mom sat with us for awhile as her horse show she was supposed to have a Loud Thunder got rained out.  Later, Shawn helped me finish the installation project to the roof vents that I wanted to accomplish, so that was something that I wanted to get done.  Then Kristi and Mallory came later in the evening, and we went for a nice hike.  In between we played some bags and had some beverages and visited.  The bugs - gnats and flies - were awful from about new to dusk, so we did spend a little time indoors.  In the evening, we sat by the campfire - even Amber got to join us on this night.

Saturday at the campground...Shawn and Mary and Chloe were at Chloe's volleyball game, so I had Harrison girls duty.  Yes, Amber and I babysat all three Harrison kids in the camper at the campground for the weekend.  Honestly, it went fine.  The girls wanted to constantly be doing things, so I got exercise as we went to the playground and went on hikes and just generally ran around.  Shawn and I and Mary and Randy Heisch and Chloe sat around the campfire and talked while Amber was with the kids turning in early in the campground.

Friday night at the campground...Shawn had a football game to officiate, so he didn't come out.  It was just Amber and I and the Harrison kids.  The weather was great...those gnats were brutal.  We watched movies and played and had fun...we did have a campfire, and Jack and Rhonda joined us for a bit.

OVERALL...it was the kind if weekend that had just about everything.  I needed it.  I wish it didn't have to end.

Friday, October 8

7:15 a.m. - We stayed at the campground last night.  I took my time getting the Eagle set up and played around with backing it up and leveling it.  Plus, I messed with the black water tank rinse function and the slideout stands.  Mr. Strachan brought Big Red, and he pulled in opposite, so the front of our campers face each other.  After a bit of a struggle with some damp firewood, we had a good fire going with a couple of beverages and solved some of the world's problems.  Amber was there too; when she arrived Shaun cooked some burgers on his Blackstone and Amber made some macaroni and cheese; it was a nice little evening campground picnic.

Today...just want to get through the day and get back out to the campground and live the simple life (sort of).  We will be making our first attempt to babysit three grandchildren at the campground...Lord, give us strength.

Thursday, October 7, 2021

5:38 a.m. - Okay!  I made it through volleyball again this week, and the weekend draws ever closer, and I'm going to get the Eagle out tonight.  Now that is something to look forward to.  The weather continues to be a little bit of a mix, but that's okay.  Amber said she packed a lot of "stuff" into the camper last night, so I just need to get some clothes in and roll on out.  Pull-in and set-up shouldn't be as challenging as the last trip - there will be more space; there will be a pull-through, and my guess is I'll be a day early from most of the reserved campers.  Plus, I don't think Amber is going with me, so I'll be able to take my sweet old time and think everything through.

Today at school, we'll continue on our way through giving students time to complete their projects.  We are going to have a journal write and share, and then we'll take a mask break, and then students can finalize their projects.

Wednesday, October 6

5:58 a.m. - The day's are getting shorter.  I'm going to enjoy early darkness when we go camping this weekend, and each day brings us one day closer.  Another volleyball night out of the way last night.  I took my first varsity match with Chad Hamerlinck, so that was good.  Varsity volleyball is just faster, and touches are going to get missed and line calls are going to get missed because we don't have line judges normally, and my eyes aren't as young as they used to be.  So it's off to MonRose again tonight, and Brandon is going to take the varsity match.  This should be interesting.  After the match, we are going to stop at City Limits in Viola and have supper because he knows the owner.  That will be nice.

It's a Free Read Wednesday day today...bless Wednesdays.  Get through today...get through tonight...get through tomorrow... the camper out to Loud Thunder tomorrow afternoon...keep the eye on the prize.  The weather is looking "mixed" - maybe a little rain Thursday and Sunday, but that's something I can work with.  I wouldn't have any problem at all having nothing to do Sunday but sit inside my camper at the campground and watch football.

Tuesday, October 5

5:45 a.m. - Last night I had my last Iowa high school volleyball match on my current schedule.  I've found that "last" is generally a relative term in the world of officiating and umpiring.  Inevitably, whenever I think "last", something else crops up, or someone needs a last-minute sub, etc...  So for now, that was my last Iowa volleyball match.  Yesterday before the volleyball match I was able to get into Central Pool Supply and get some liquid chlorine - chlorine (or money) I'll be pouring into the pool soon, perhaps as early as this morning when the sun comes up.

At school, I pushed out the presentation assignment for students to begin working on.  Many of them saw the October 14 due date and just then wasted time.  As the old saying goes, you can lead the horse to water, but it's got to decide to drink.  Okay, maybe that's not the exact saying, but it's my version.

Today, should be a manageable day, and I don't have to cover a study hall, which is nice.  I didn't enjoy that at all.  It's true my patience with students seems to decrease every day, but throw a few squirrely freshmen in the mix, and I'm about ready to turn in my retirement papers on the spot.

Tonight it's back to varsity volleyball.  This time I'm at Sherrard, and they host Riverdale.  Sherrard should win everything, and I might just take the stand for the varsity game.

Monday, October 4

5:05 a.m. -  Yesterday's activities were attended church, mowed the yard, watched the Bears, cleaned the pool (again), helped Amber watch the Harrison kids, tried to watch Sunday Night Football, went to bed.  This week, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are going to be busy.  Thursday, I'll have my sights set on a little camping weekend.  So let's get through this week.  I'm going to get some downtime during the end of October and beginning of November prior to the start of basketball season.  I need to use that time to get in some kind of basketball shape to be able to get up and down the floor.

Sunday, October 3

7:23 a.m. - I was able to accomplish some things yesterday, but most importantly, I had a chance to meet with Carmen and her boyfriend Tyler.  They both are very happy, and he seems like a really good guy.  We didn't spend a whole lot of time together; did a little shopping for some West Central apparel, and then we had lunch at a little restaurant - all of this taking place in Monmouth.  I miss Carmen a lot, as as miss Cole and Chase too.  Later on in the evening I had a chance to spend some time with Mom and Dad at the farm.  It was nice to let life slow down and just visit with them.

It's going to be rainy today, which doesn't really lend itself to mowing the yard, spraying weeds, or continuing to try to regain the pool from the algae.  I think Amber and I are going to church, and I'd like to watch some football today and get some exercise in.  Maybe I'll exercise while I'm watching football down in the basement.

I don't have a lot of schoolwork to accomplish, so I should be able to get that done.  One other thing I did yesterday was to buy some different bird feed.  I hope the birds come back; apparently the economy bird seed I bought a few weeks ago just wasn't appealing.  I looked this morning, and no birds had arrived yet to discover the new birdfeed blend.

Saturday, October 2

3:50 a.m. - I was really tired last night, and I could no longer watch Maryland just turn the football over and get killed by Iowa, so I went to bed early.  Iowa went on to win 51-14, and I still think being rated #5 is way overrated, and I woke up and can't now get back to sleep because I went to bed too early.  Today I get to visit with Carmen and her new "friend".  Apparently she is in a "relationship"?  Apparently people don't "date" anymore or "go out with" anymore, so it's now "in a relationship".  I'm going to meet her and Tyler in Monmouth to do a little shopping for her birthday, which was last Sunday.  And then we are going to have some lunch somewhere.

I just noticed on my list below...I don't have anymore junior high volleyball matches.  From here on out it's all high school.  Lord, give me strength.

5:14 a.m. - I'm usually not up this early working on schoolwork, but that's what I just did.  Hopefully, that means I'll have a little more time to do other things this weekend and Monday morning.
