Wednesday, April 30

6:48 a.m. - I'm headed to therapy a little earlier today - 9 a.m.  After that, I have a vision appointment to check my eye pressure.  I also hope to get to ICE this afternoon a little like the past two days.  On the way home, I'm going to stop in and check on mom.

Yesterday was an okay day.  I did get my exercises in, and I was at ICE for a couple of hours.  I did feel ready to get home, as being in the building eventually just led to a discomfort level that I had had enough of.

Tuesday, April 29

7:34 a.m. - Yesterday went as planned...completed a PT trip, got a haircut, picked up some chlorine, and eventually later in the day got to ICE.  They had just finished their assessment kick-off assembly, and I was able to see students when they were coming in the building from their 2:00 recess.  I stayed for less than an hour, but at least I got there.  I think this afternoon I'm going to try and go again.  

I'm noticing that the pain and discomfort in my leg is decreasing in size.  I'm still not able to sleep very well at all, which makes for very long nights, but I'm still making progress.  I'm also trying to transition to a cane instead of the walker.

Today this morning I'm going to focus on exercises and an ice treatment.  And then I'll go from there.

I started "the morning" at about 7 a.m. because I didn't sleep well last night, so even though Amber was up and about at 5:45 a.m., and I was in the recliner, I went back to the blue room and slept until about 7.  When getting up, the first order of the day is to use the bathroom (of course) and then get some coffee in me.  I find that the coffee energy helps lift my spirits and gets me going.  I then watch some news (Today Show) and next make a little breakfast - today it was an egg, cheese, bacon bagel.  I need some breakfast to have a little food in the belly for the morning pills I'm supposed to take - baby aspirin, iron, and stool softener.  I also take one Tylenol because I know I'm going to need it for my morning "at home therapy exercises".  Then I'm  back to the recliner to let the Tylenol sink in for about 30 minutes.  Then it's off to the blue room (spare bedroom) for therapy exercises - butt cheek squeezes, quad set (push knee down), active leg raises (using my lift belt), and the dreaded assisted heel slides.  All of these exercises are done three sets of 20, and I need to push the limits of discomfort in order to gain strength and flexibility.  And truth be told, between the official ORA PT sessions, and the home sessions, I see and feel improvement every day.  After exercises, then I give the knee and ice therapy session with the polar cube machine.  Now it's 9:15 and I'm typing away.

Monday, April 28

6:05 a.m. -   Yesterday was a good day.  Physically, I stayed off the narcotics pain killer, and I completed all of my exercises and was up and moving around quite a bit.  I also did a test drive and passed my self-test.  I drove to ICE and Casey's, and I was able to get in and out of the car well enough to make the decision to drive myself to my PT appointment today.  

In the afternoon, Mr. Strachan came and helped me with the mower deck.  He got the deck off and cleaned it, and we determined that the only repair needed is the deck belt, which is good news.  

The rest of the day was spent watching television and icing the leg.  

Today is another PT appointment day.  I'm also going to try to get chlorine for the pool on the way home.  And then I'm hoping to make a surprise visit to ICE around 2 p.m.  Let's see how today goes.

9:35 a.m. - It's Sunday, 11 days after surgery.  People are getting tired of me being laid up...Amber's tired, the staff at ICE are tired, I'm having to lean on family and friends for help.  I need to recover faster.  Yesterday I tried to go without the narcotics for pain, and that wasn't easy.  I think tonight I may take one just before bed to try to help me sleep a bit better, and then stick to the Extra Strength Tylenol the rest of the day.  

I've gotten my morning pills taken (iron, baby aspirin, and stool softener) with a little breakfast Amber made for me.  I've also completed my a.m. exercises, so now as I'm typing this up, I'm applying and ice bag treatment.  I think I'm going to experiment with some driving starting with the HHR to get it out of the garage.  It needs to get out of the garage in order to put the mower in there, as Shawn said he could come over and help me get the deck off to see what kind of parts I need to get it fixed.  I'm still hoping it's just a belt.  

I'm also going to try the truck out and see how driving that goes.  Nobody will be in the school parking lot today, so that's going to be my experiment area.  I'm also going to see if I can drive the tractor up in the garage, but that might be the hardest of the three experiments.  I just have to figure out how to get my walker with me.  

And if all works well, I might drive out to ICE to get my cane and see how I can use the bathroom.  I'm a little worried about the bathroom thing, since I still have to pee every 2-3 hours.

12:05 p.m. - It's been a good day so far...breakfast, exercises, medication, lunch, finished my book I wanted to finish, balanced the checkbook...I know these are pretty mundane things, but they are important in my current world.

Yesterday was a good day - had a PT appointment, and then mom and I watched Conclave after we got back.  It was an interesting film, and I can see why the Catholic community wasn't exactly a big fan.  I was thinking there would be a surprise ending, but I didn't anticipate the ending that occurred.  Later in the day, Cole helped again get the pool opening finalized (sort of).  Cole also helped with finishing the lawn (sort of).  Unfortunately, he burnt up a belt on the mower deck, and I'm hoping that's all it is.  

Today, I need to get down to the shed and figure out the model number of the mower in order to get a deck belt ordered.  I also need to check on the pool.  I may even see if I can physically get in and out of the HHR and the Ford.  I'm not sure about trying to drive yet, but if the parking lot gets cleared of cars, I may give it a try.  Amber is away looking at wedding dresses with Karrigan and Kourtney and Kenzie (among others).  I'm not sure when she's getting back.

6:59 a.m. - Yesterday was productive.  I got all my exercises and icing and "recovery stuff" done as needed in the morning and during the day, and then Cole came over to the house from substituting at the high school to help Amber with mowing the yard.  Then he helped me with opening up the pool.  While it didn't help Cole, Amber's friend Deanna brought us some enchiladas, which were awesome for dessert.  The pool isn't completely open yet...there are some issues that need to be worked out, and the pool cover still needs to be folded up and stored back in the shed.  Cole said he would be able to come over again after school today and help with that.

I have another physical therapy appointment this morning, and mom is going to help me with that.   I'm hoping I can drive to appointments next week.  She and I are going to finish off a movie when we get back home.  I hope this afternoon to get some rest because I did too much on the leg yesterday when I was trying to do what I could to help Amber and Cole.  I didn't sleep well last night, but that's not a surprise.  It's just hard to get comfortable.  I think I have an idea to try next week, though, that will help.  I'm going to try to have an ice bag on my quad above my knee to help with the discomfort.

9:25 a.m. - It's been a decent morning.  I've got the windows open to let in some air, which is nice.  The Safelite guy has come and gone, which is good.  That's a lot of money for a 20-minute job, but if it saves the windshield, I'll be saving money on replacing the whole windshield.   I've gotten my exercises done this morning, and I've managed to respond to a couple of emails.  I wish I could do more, but I can't stand for very long nor sit for very long, which is not a great combination of struggles.

8:32 a.m. - Today won't be easy.  I got up and got showered to get ready for two appointments today.  My mom is taking me to both.  First up is the tough one - PT at ORA - 20 minutes of agonizing hell, but it has to be done.  The second appointment is with Hussein in Silvis.  That won't be as physically painful, but I've been wrong with just about everything else so far, so I wouldn't be surprised if that appointment is horrible too.

In between, mom and I are going to watch Conclave.  

Let's hope today goes well.

3:13 p.m.

It's been a relatively quiet day.  Shawn and Amber visited around lunch time, but other than that it's been me in recovery mode.  I did watch some Ted Lasso episodes, and just now I was on the Chromebook for a bit.  The leg is feeling stronger...I can almost put enough weight on the leg to not need a walker.  I've also completed my PT exercises for morning and noon.

Tomorrow is another PT session and a visit with Dr. Hussein...perhaps I can find out exactly what was done to my knee.  My mom is going to take me to the appointments, and in between we are going to watch Conclave.

Yesterday was good...Cole, Chase, and the Hoenigs were all here in the afternoon.  I couldn't do a hole lot but it was nice to visit

11:09 a.m. - Just got back from ORA PT appointment...boy those hurts.  Yesterday was relatively quiet for an Easter.  I watched a lot of NHL hockey and NBA basketball.  I'm settling in to trying to help my recovery.  It's going to be a grind.

Happy Easter 2025 - Sunday, April 20

This is my morning briefing for Tuesday.

Good Morning Illinois City Elementary Staff,

The box of goodies and cards that Wendy dropped off were awesome...thank you.  The surgery and initial recovery have all been tougher than what I envisioned.  I had surgery at 7 a.m. last Wednesday, and the procedure lasted about  30 minutes longer than expected because of how bad the knee was.  After the initial anesthesia from surgery (including a spinal tap) the pain in my leg in the afternoon was pretty much unbearable.  I'd like to consider myself a person with pretty high pain tolerance, but my entire right leg was throbbing and aching and felt like it was on fire.  I'm pretty sure the nursing and nursing tech crew thought I was just a big baby, but it was awful.  They thankfully decided to give me some pretty good "stuff" and morphine, and I could at least stop crying and moaning for a few hours.  The wall hit again in the middle of the night (when I wasn't getting any sleep anyway.  Plus, I was retaining fluid and couldn't urinate - if you have ever considered catheters fun, they aren't.  So then it was another round of the good stuff, morphine, and what appeared to be an IV-sized bag of urine removed from my bladder.  

So after that night I figured there was no way I was going to get to go home on Thursday, but I was cleared after I could demonstrate that I could pee again, use the walker well enough, get up and down a couple of stairs, and complete initial in-patient physical therapy.  Amber and I picked up the meds at Walgreens, grabbed lunch at McDonalds and were home around 1 p.m.  Unfortunately, we don't have handrails for the steps into our house, so I basically went backwards and slid my butt to a couple of chairs just to get into the house.

Since getting home Thursday afternoon, I've figured out I have to take the pain meds about every five hours.  And I slept that night in the power recliner that Amber had gotten for me.  The only time I've been out of the house was Friday morning when I went to the first scheduled physical therapy appointment.  My friend picked me up and helped me get in and out of the truck but lifting my right leg up for me as I don't have any strength yet in my leg to lift the foot higher than just off the ground.  I must have looked really bad coming out of the ORA physical therapy clinic because all the "old people" where offering words of encouragement and telling me the worst was over - I pretty much just wanted to punch everyone in the face as I tried to figure out how in the hell I got to this point in my life when just yesterday I was a senior at Rockridge High.

So now as I type this, it's 11:14 on Easter Sunday - Happy Easter!  I was able to get to our home office room and spend some time in front of the computer, but staying in any one position with the leg for any length of time just gets uncomfortable as hell.  I think I will be able to get some screen time throughout the day, but it will have to be in short doses.  If what my surgeon and the PT people and the "old people" at ORA are right, I should start to feel better in a couple days, and according to my PT I should be able to drive in a couple of weeks.  I've been told not to rush things but to also work hard at PT and work to gain strength and range of motion - to make recovery like a part-time job.

Wednesday, April 16

4:02 a.m. - Today is finally here, but it wasn't until I dealt with another challenging and long day yesterday.  I went to the dang "clearance" appointment with my primary doctor, where I found out that he had nothing to do with the appointment - basically it's a "liability appointment" for the anesthesiologist and the surgeon.  If I die on the table today, they have an additional layer of protection that my doctor "cleared" me for surgery.  

After that, it was off to a meeting at the unit office, and then it was back to ICE for meetings there along with a couple of student issues.  After getting out of the last meeting about 4:15, I thought I was in the clear, but no.  Then there was a "situation" at my house that dropped in that I needed to take care of - too much to try to tell here, and it would be difficult to believe if it wasn't true.  

About 9 p.m. I followed all the instructions I had received for today - showered, wiped with disinfectant cloths, didn't eat or drink anything after midnight, etc.

So now I'm up early and ready to be at the hospital by 5:30 a.m., surgery by 7 a.m., and hopefully in recovery by 8:30 a.m.  And then after that I guess I'm going to follow orders and read my book(s) and hopefully be back tomorrow morning as soon as possible.  Let's get this done.  I need to get back to work, I need to get the pool opened, and I need to be able to walk and get exercise and lose some weight.

Tuesday, April 15

5:48 a.m. - Got through yesterday...lots of meetings at school and then a BOE meeting.  After school, the GMC went to a new home.  Yesterday, I also received notice that I have to go to my primary care doctor today to be "cleared" for my surgery tomorrow.  Seriously?  And people wonder why the healthcare industry is hated.  

So this morning I'll drive to Coal Valley to get "cleared" and then go to school and have many more meetings and get home.  I may try to get the pool opened today because it may be awhile before I can attempt that.

I'm just ready to get this surgery done, get recovered, and get back to life.

Monday, April 14

5:59 a.m. - Last week was crazy.  This week will be the same.

Yesterday was the last day in the campground, and we had an Easter lunch here at the house, along with an egg hunt.  All of Amber's girls and grandchildren were here - it was quite the gathering.  It was great to see them all together, especially after the Harrisons experienced Brinley's diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes.  

For me, the day started with getting up to a quiet camper and beginning the process of pull out.  I only did a few things, though, as I had jobs waiting at home.  There was no way I was going to get everything done in time by 11 a.m. to meet the campground expectations, so I just bought another day - $26 to Loud Thunder for the opportunity to go back in the afternoon and take my time with the camper was well worth it.  

So I got back home around 8:30 and commenced to complete my jobs.  I got the yard partially mowed for the Easter Bunny to hide the eggs, and got some things moved around inside for the party.  I also had a visitor look at the GMC, and she made an offer.  I asked for a bit more, and we reached an agreement.  She's supposed to be here after school with a payment, and hopefully we can make the exchange quickly and smoothly today before I have to head up to the BOE meeting.  

After the Easter lunch party was over, it was back to the campground to take care of the Eagle and bring it back home.  I took my time and cleaned and put everything back in place, as I don't know the next time I'll be able to get it out.  I was careful and slow hooking up the camper, and getting it backed in next to the house was a bit different than using the GMC.  My neighbor helped me, which was nice of him.  

Then after getting the camper down and truck pulled away, I finished mowing the yard, which was a struggle...my knee isn't getting any better, so push mowing was not fun.  I finally got done and went inside and read my book for a bit and turned in to bed early - I was tired.

Today...I'll be in the building to scurry and try to catch up on paperwork and attend IEP meetings and try to get ready to be gone for the next ten days.  And because I really need time to work and there is a full moon, that means I'll be dealing with student issues all day.  It's all part of the job.

Saturday, April 12

8:21 a.m. - Yesterday was kindergarten screening day.  I did a lot of walking, but it was a break from being in the office at ICE.  Later I went to the campground, but nobody took up my offer to visit and sit around the campfire....I spent over $100 at Dollar General, so I have a lot of food to cook up now for just me...yikes.  It's a good thing I don't mind leftovers.  Brooklyn and Luke were with us in the camper, as well as Sophie - not exactly a quiet peaceful night, but we got through it.  

Today I have Luke for a little while, so we are going to do a couple of things here at home and then head back to the campground.  Other than cooking and eating and having a fire and using the last of the firewood, I'm not exactly sure what is going to happen.  I do wish that I could sell the GMC.

Friday, April 11 - Happy Birthday Cole!

6:15 a.m.  - Yesterday was a long one.  Parent meeting at 8, admin meeting at 9, funeral at noon, luncheon at 2, ICE family night at 4.  Needless to day, I crashed in the camper by 8:30.  

Today...kindergarten screening...I'm going to need to muster up some energy, put on a happy face, and play the part.  The truth is that I really can't wait until this week is over.

Thursday, April 10

5:41 a.m. - Yesterday was a challenging day.  I had an principals' meeting at UTHS with area principals, which started out with a student issue before I even was able to get to UT.  The meeting ended around 11:30, and then it was off to school at ICE and dealing with the student issue.  Then I got through the ICE student council meeting only to have another student issue between two boys waiting for me after the meeting.  Then in the middle of all that, another situation popped up.  Eventually the school day ended, and then it was off to check on things at home and then go to the visitation for Bill.  I stayed most of the time but checked out just before it was over in order to get back home and see how things were at home.

Today....another challenging day awaits.
