Tuesday, May 31

5:48 a.m.  Yesterday's Supersectional went about as well as it could go.  I drove two and a half hours, worked a fairly uneventful 1-0 exciting game at first base while my partners did their things at the plate and at third base, and then I drove two and a half hours home.  Then I got in the pool with the Harrison kids.  Then I went to Erin Danner's graduation party.  Then I came home, watched a little television, and went to bed.  

Today the focus is on getting the school year wrapped up and my room all packed up.  No softball today.

Monday, May 30

5:27 a.m. - Yesterday was a GOOD ONE!  I got up and got a quick bike ride in.  I then worked on weeds and mowed the yard.  I got that done early enough to make it to church service.  I wanted to do that because Pastor Paul is retiring, and he only has a few services left.  Because I wasn't camping or didn't have grandchildren or wasn't umpiring, I needed to go see him, and I'm glad I did.  He's such a wonderful person, and I'm so happy for him that he gets the opportunity to retire.  After church service we had our first official "pool day".  Pool days are far and few between...basically family and friends join us in some pool time, conversation, and a meal.  I grilled up some brats and burgers, and folks brought potato salad and baked beans and mac-and-cheese and even some pie.  It was a good old-fashioned holiday weekend spread! My mom and dad came, as well as Amber's parents.  And Greg and Georgia joined us too.  

Today, in a little bit I'll be off to Bloomington for my Supersectional game.  I've been to the campus of Illinois Wesleyan, but I've never umpired there, so it will be a bit of an adventure.  Over two hours driving there and over two hours driving back, and I will probably umpire on the field no more than two hours.  That makes for a long day.  I have first base, which is fine.  I don't have to get on my plate gear, and the temps are supposed to be warm, so I will take it.  I get to meet two new partners, so that will be fun.  I'll probably get home and jump in the pool and relax.  

Tomorrow is looking like a "rain day", and I had tomorrow open tomorrow anyway to take care of last day of school responsibilities.

Sunday, May 29

5:58 a.m. - Yesterday was fairly productive.  I got a little yardwork done after taking a bike ride and before going to umpire a couple of freshmen games at North Scott.  On the way to the ballpark, I stopped at Farm-N-Fleet and pick up some things I needed.  Then when I got home, I considered mowing the yard but thought better of it.  I think I'm going to mow today.  Then we cooked some steaks on the grill and had a nice supper.  Yesterday, I had a chance to see my neighbor's new camper.  It's nice, and I like the steps it has...definitely better than what we have.  I'm a little concern about that brand of step but I like that it's much more solid and not as steep.

Today I'm going to work on the yard and then have some pool time, as the temps are supposed to warm up.

6:01 a.m. - Yesterday was yet another productive day.  The vast majority of the school year is now over.  One student was absent and needs to take a semester exam on Tuesday.  Then I need to do all my grade verification stuff and pack up my room and complete the end of the year checklist, and head out.  Last night, my sectional championship game couldn't have gone much better.  Final score was 2-1, and there were no controversies.  I really enjoyed my partners and the experience.  Rockridge won its softball game and plays later today.  Speaking of today...should be a nice one.  I've got a couple of games to work, and it should be a nice day.

6:26 a.m. - Yesterday after school, I was productive.  I vacuumed the pool, and I assembled and installed the new hitch bike carrier I purchased for the camper.  It's not on the camper yet because the bumper adapter hasn't arrived yet, but it's on the truck and operational.  The set-up isn't as strong and stable as I had hoped, but I wasn't prepared to spend $700 or more on a unit, so we are going to try this $250 version and hope it works out.  A side note on the pool cleaning is that I think I have a fairly large garden snake that has taken up residence near the pool area.  I can't tell if it's attempting to make a home under the heater or under the filter, but I fear there's an interest from the snake in one or both of the areas.  I don't like snakes at all, and Amber wants me to kill it, but I don't really want to do that.  I tried to convince it to move along last night.  Maybe if I just try to continue to convince it to find a new residence, it will agree.

Today is the last full day of the 21-22 school year.  It will be a long day for me, as I still have three semester exams left to administer and supervise.  I also have a late night tonight with a softball game in Williamsfield beginning at 6 p.m.  There was a lot of rain, though, yesterday, and they may be getting rain this morning, so I'm wondering if the game will be able to be played tonight.

We got paid today!  That's a nice little Friday surprise.  The cash flow is still currently a problem, but I'm going to try to work on that by picking up some extra Iowa softball games, even though I'm tired and don't want to.  I need to beef up the cash flow for that trip to South Dakota in July.

6:15 a.m. - The last regular day of school was completed yesterday.  Now on to semester exams today and tomorrow.  My game at Bettendorf was cancelled last night, and even though I need the work, I didn't mind.  I came home and played with the Harrison kids for a bit and then had a quiet night.  Amber was late getting home because she was a chaperone for the 8th grade Great America trip.

I have first period free today, so I'll be working on packing up my room.  Then I have two semester exams - 3rd and 7th period.  Tomorrow I have three exam periods - 2nd, 4th, 6th.

The weather seems to be forecasted to be improving this weekend, so that will be nice.

6:23 a.m. - Ugh last night was a long night.  At Williamsfield - two sectional semi-final games - two extra inning games - didn't get home until 11:00.  I'm tired.  That's two late nights in a row.  I need a rainout today.

Yesterday there was a school shooting in Texas...elementary school - 19 children and two adults were killed.  It's just sickening.

I want to get through the day...get to semester exams tomorrow and Friday, get to the sectional championship Friday night...have the pool ready to go this weekend, and just relax for a bit.

 7:44 a.m. - Last night I was reminded why I don't want to work Iowa High School softball.  I got home at 10 p.m.  I can do it; I just don't want to do it.  Today...happy birthday to my oldest son Chase.  I hope he has a nice day.  At school, show movies and tie up loose ends.  I may actually also start packing my room up.

5:56 a.m. - The weather forecast for the week is looking cool again, and there is rain moving in, but perhaps the rain will wait until Wednesday to get here.  That timing would be great if it happens.  The sectional game night I'd really like to get in at Williamsfield is tomorrow night.  Wednesday I'm supposed to have an Iowa game night, and I really am okay if the JV DH at Bettendorf is postponed.  Tonight, I'm headed to DeWitt.  I'm not really sure what to expect going there.

This morning the temps are cold again, but I think I'm going to get out on the bike anyway and get the legs moving.  Today...working on scoring journals, scoring exit surveys, and students are watching movies of the novels we just finished reading last Friday.

Sunday, May 22

5:12 p.m.  - The Harrison kids spent the night, and then today we packed in a lot of stuff...bike ride, went to the farm and rode horse, played on the swings outside...we did a lot of stuff.  Plus I got the weeds sprayed and I mowed around the pool again....those were two big accomplishments.  Now the house is quiet, and it's a beautiful day, but it's cold.  I need to lose some weight, so I'm trying to drink lots of water and do better with my eating...that being said...some ice cream right now sounds really good.  

So now I'm catching up on my computer stuff.  Graduation was today...I didn't go; in fact, as the ceremony was going on, I was outside with the grandchildren, probably being watched by some people in the gym, as the doors were open.  

This week...survive and move on.  I need to score the journals, record the exit survey completion scores, get the semester exam scores entered, and move on.  The key to the last week of school is having enough work for me and the students to keep the week moving but not have too much work to be unable to finish it all in one week. 

I bought a bike rack carrier yesterday, and I'm hoping I made a good choice.  I wanted something that wasn't too cheap, but I also didn't want to spend $700.  This is something I'll be able to put on the back of the camper and also use on my truck.

Saturday, May 21

4:34 a.m. - I woke up about an hour ago and couldn't get back to sleep, so I got up.  Somehow I got to thinking about negotiations, and that was enough to keep my mind whirling.

Yesterday went well.  The school day went well, and then umpiring went well.  I had the plate in our regional championship game.  For me, I enjoy umpiring softball.  I've been doing it a long time, and the post-season is where the magic and the excitement are at.  I know that sounds a little weird, so let me explain.  I enjoy officiating because I get to be around the game, and I get to be around my umpiring friends.  (For example, I love the crew that we have for this week and next week.  We just have fun.)  At my age now and my experience level, though, the regular season just doesn't have the same "edge" that it did when I first started out.  I'm not trying to sound arrogant, but the regular season - especially in softball - is really more about trying to stay warm and dry and survive.  But around the end of May when post season arrives, the energy levels are higher.  The games are louder; there are more spectators; there's nervousness in the air; big plays draw big applause.  Yes as an umpire I have some nervousness, but it's nervousness about want to get the game right...not nervousness that I'm not prepared or ready for the game's atmosphere.  I just really like being "in it".  It's like being in a storm...it's fun to watch a storm from a distance, but it's much more fun to see it and here it and feel it from the inside.  We aren't the players; we aren't the coaches; we aren't the parents and other spectators; but we are still in the atmosphere and are a part of it.  That's what makes umpiring the regular season worth it (along with some extra spending cash).  Completing the regular season allows you to get into "the storm" that is the postseason.  It's not for everyone, but for me and many others, it's a lot of excitement and fun.

TODAY...I may help Shawn and Tucker move Tucker's (and Carrie) to his new house in NewWindsor.  I also need to work on the pool and work on the yard.  I'll have to watch the weather this morning and see if Mother Nature is going to cooperate.

5:52 a.m. - It's garbage day!  I think Mother Nature is going to let me get a little bike ride in this morning.  Today should be another survival day at school...we are turning in textbooks, so we'll check that off the end-of-the-school-year checklist.  Students were supposed to have finished reading their novels by this morning....many of them will have accomplished that; many will not.   No umpiring tonight...instead it's another round of negotiations between RTA and District #300.  I really hope we make significant progress tonight.

5:44 a.m. - I was going to get up early and get a bike ride in, but Mother Nature put the brakes on that one.  Apparently we are going to get some showers and perhaps thunderstorms this morning.  Yesterday went fine...another day to survive the school day, but I did reserve a camping weekend at a new place near Peoria for the weekend of June 16-17-18.  This might be the only weekend camping trip until July, which is a bummer, but I guess that's a good reason to book a little nicer weekend trip.


Last night's softball game was fine.  It's always different working three-person mechanics instead of two-person.  Each season, we just don't work a lot of 3-person, so it just takes a few innings to get back into the swing.  3-person does have better coverage of the diamond, so there is a reduction in the number of calls each umpire needs to make.  Yesterday, I also finalized a spot in a basketball officiating clinic on June 26.  This was important because my basketball officiating crew needs to learn shot-clock mechanics because Iowa high school officiating is going to feature a shot clock next season.

Today...survive the day again, but I think I have the rest of the school year pretty much planned out, so that's good news.  We are going to get the novels finished, so the second semester exams will cover the novels.

6:05 a.m. - Yesterday after school was a scramble.  I picked up some chlorine, tilled my mom's garden, worked on my mower, mowed a little, and sprayed Weed-B-Gone on some weeds around the house.  We also took Luke on a little bike ride with the new pull behind cart.  Today it's just another day at school and then some softball umpiring in Kewanee.

5:59 a.m. - An 18-year old white guy drove three hours to a black neighborhood grocery store with the intent to kill black people and livestream it on his social medial platform.  The action is horrendous, but the education/experience that young man must have had to act out such an event are what trouble me the most.  

Today the temps are cooler, which will be refreshing.  I need to get to my moms and help her till her garden, and I need to pick up some chlorine.  I'll probably do both of those things after school, and then I hope to get home and perhaps work on the yard and spray some weeds.

Sunday, May 15

6:41 p.m. - This weekend went very, very well.  I'm feeling very blessed to have been granted the time and circumstances.  The rain avoided us at the campground at Scott County Park, and the temperatures weren't as hot.  We had a lot of time with little Luke Jason, and Rhonda and Jack came out and visited Saturday afternoon for awhile.  I read my book; I had a chance to use the Blackstone griddle again twice.  I like the organization scheme I have right now for storage.  I'm feeling better and better about pulling the fifth wheel trailer, even though backing up into a specific area is still a struggle.  I'm sure I'll get better with more experience.  I had a chance just to be with Amber, and that's something we need.  I slept very well too.  Weekends like that just make retirement all the more enticing.

Today we returned home a little earlier than a normal pull out day because there was a chance of rain in the afternoon, and it did rain.  I got a bunch of little things done around the house, plus I went a got a haircut.  If I don't have a softball game tomorrow, I may run and get some chlorine.

Today, I also assembled the little bike trailer that we got for Christmas.  Luke Jason was the first participant to take a ride.  Now I just have to figure out how to get bicycles and the trailer with us when we go camping.  I'd like to purchase a bike rake for the RV, but they are a bit pricey.

5:51 a.m. - I didn't particularly care for the weather forecast this morning.  Saturday looks great.  Today looks a little scary with strong thunderstorms this afternoon, and then Sunday appears to be a "rain day", and I don't really want pull-out day to be a rain day.  I think we'll just hope for the best.  Life's an adventure, right?

I took a personal day from school today to get ready here at home and be able to roll out as soon as possible.  I feel a little guilty taking a personal day today because the seniors have their last day today, and they will be squirrels.  With IHSA postseason softball coming up, though, I won't be able to do any camping the next three weekends, so I really want to get the Eagle out and relax this weekend.

Yesterday went better than I had hoped.  The students did pretty well with the socratic seminar activity.  I hope they don't give the substitute much trouble today.

7:48 a.m. - Internet still isn't working at home.  I got up and vacuumed the pool today, which was big because it's now fairly presentable.  I did swim in it yesterday, and I also did swim in it this morning before vacuuming.  It's very hot for middle of May...I'm sitting on my desk at school and sweating at 7:49...that's not good.

Today...survive it and get to tonight's wonderful softball event at Monmouth-Roseville.

Tomorrow...busy day...mow the yard...load up the camper...get to Scott County park before the storms hit.

7:47 a.m. - Internet wasn't function at home this morning.  We are supposed to reach a record high temp of 93 degrees today...the room is already hot; smells like the beginning of the school year.  The students will be very cheerful.  Yesterday's half day was survived...I did get a lot of stuff done.  Yesterday's softball game at Knoxville wasn't exactly fun.  I worked with a new partner, which was fine.  The game was awful...22-12...ugh.

Today unless I get a last minute call to work softball, I'll be headed home.  If the wind is calm, I might be spraying weeds.

Tuesday, May 10

6:12 a.m. - My game at Galesburg was cancelled.  I then came home and planted some flowers in the flower bed and checked on the pool.  The Harrison kids then arrived, and the rest of the evening was spent with them before going to bed.  I did cook up those morels that Kenzie and Darrin gave to us on Sunday.

Today is a half-day early dismissal...for what I'm not sure.  I'm not going to turn it back at this point.  The weather is supposed to be warm again.  I'm supposed to work a game at Knoxville...I guess we'll see.

Monday, May 9

6:18 a.m.   - So yesterday I was vacuuming the pool with a stocking hat on.  Today apparently the temps are suppose to climb to the mid-80's.  Hello Summer...sorry we missed you this year Spring.

Yesterday - vacuumed the pool, mowed the grass (again), helped mom ride horses, went to get flowers with Amber, went to Aunt Mary's for Mother's Day celebration, came back home and worked on flower garden, watched the Cubs vs. the Dodgers but fell asleep watching the game - Cubs lost 7-1.

And now on to another week!

Sunday, May 8

9:04 a.m. - Through what must have been divine intervention, to pool opening occurred yesterday.  And just this morning the first vacuum of the pool occurred - not an easy process.  So when it turns 90 in a couple of days, and people want to swim, the pool may not be completely ready, but it will be ready enough.  And speaking of 90 degree weather....I was out in a coat and stocking hat just now working on the pool.  Hard to believe summer will arrive in a couple of days.

Yesterday after pool opening we went to Brooklyn's game, then I helped mom transport a horse, then we went to Tucker's birthday party, and then we went to the casino...it was pretty full day.

Today...Happy Mothers' Day.  I'm going to soon go help mom with the horse, then go to Aunt Mary's for a cookout, and then go back home and try to work on the pool some more and mow the grass again.  It's bee a pretty hectic weekend.

6:16 a.m. - I got the yard mowed yesterday after school and before the birthday/Mothers' Day party in the house.  It was cold, cloudy, and raw.  It's hard to imagine that the weather forecast has temps near 90 degrees by mid-week.  The pressure is on to get the pool opened up, and that's what I'm going to try to accomplish today among and between attending a youth soccer game and another birthday party.  I'm just hoping the pool open process goes smoothly...there are a lot of question marks, the filter, the motor, the water level...it's all up in the air.  If everything goes smoothly and everything is operational by tomorrow afternoon, it may be a miracle.
