6:01 a.m. - I'm watching the radar today...I want to get out to Loud Thunder and set up the camper, but I don't really want to do it in the rain. Right now, it looks like the rain is coming in when I was expecting to set up, so maybe I can go earlier or later. Then again, I guess I could take my rain gear and just do the set up in the rain. I need to go get some pool filter sand, so maybe I'll just do that in the rain, and wait for the showers to pass through before taking the camper out. In summary, I'm just not exactly sure how this is going to work out today---it's going to be a work in progress.

Yesterday was pretty routine - wake up, go to school, survive the day, umpire, come home.

This morning on the news, the weather forecast for this weekend had a little good news and a little bad news. According to the forecast Saturday isn't going to be a wash out...that's the good news. Unfortunately, storms might be in the forecast Saturday evening...just something to keep an eye on.

6:28 a.m. - The weather forecast for this weekend isn't improving for my wishes of a beautiful camping weekend....dang it. Come on Mother Nature! Today I have the night off from umpiring due to another meeting between the teachers' association and the school district for the purpose of collective bargaining. It could be an interesting night tonight.

Last night was relatively uneventful....it was a pretty lopsided game. Yesterday at school was basically "more of the same"...I tried to be light and creative with students, and then basically weren't interested. At least I tried. I have some scoring of assignments I need to get done, so that's my main focus today. I need to get a good book to read too, especially if camping is going to include some rain time.

6:33 a.m. - Yesterday I umpired a fresh-soph game at Mercer County that just may have been the coldest experience I ever participated in. Two pairs of socks in plate shoes still had my feet cold. I also wore two coats over a long sleeved shirt...still cold. It was brutal. Can this weather finally warm up and stay warm?

At school we got through most of the remaining training path projects, which means we now turn our attention the novels - Fahrenheit 451 for the English III sections and The Ox-Bow Incident for the Advanced English III sections. I'd really like to get a small research paper in their somewhere prior to the end of the school year, but I don't think we'll make it.

The best news of the day yesterday was that I reserved a campsite for Loud Thunder this weekend...we are getting the Eagle out. I know Loud Thunder is only five minutes away, but a friend of mine sent me a message telling me he was going out this weekend, so it just made sense. The weather isn't going to be great, and the forecast is calling for rain early Saturday morning. The temps, though, are at least going to be in the 60's. I have some things I want to do with organizing the storage area, so just getting the camper out onto a site will be something different to do.

6:24 a.m. - This cold, windy weather continues. The forecast this morning is calling for freeze warnings for tomorrow - geez. I guess there was at least a little normal warmth this past weekend. Yesterday I took my suit back to Ducky's, but even that was a struggle. I thought it opened at 10 a.m., but hours didn't start until noon. I managed to find a Lowe's a do a little shopping for some camping stuff I didn't really need but ended up getting anyway. After finally dropping off the suit, I got back home and worked on the yard. I did get the yard mowed, and I got some stuff removed out of the shed. I also emptied out the pool filter sand, which is not an easy project. Now I need to find a way to get into Moline and pick up some new sand. With the weather forecast, though, I don't think I'll be opening up the pool anytime this week. And I thought about trying to get a camping weekend in this weekend, but that doesn't look promising either. I guess I need to be thankful for what we did get this past weekend. Oh, and after the yard work, we did have a little supper with the Southwells (minus Pat) and Rhonda and Jack. We cooked some hamburgers and brats on the grill, so that was nice.

Now it's back to work. I need to finish up viewing the students' training path projects and get rolling with the new novel units for each course. Is it time for summer vacation yet?

8:16 a.m. - Carmen and Tyler were married yesterday. The ceremony was at their small church in Fort Madison, Iowa. Amber and I had attended the rehearsal on Friday evening. We then went out to have some supper at Pizza Ranch afterwards, and Carmen's friend, Destiny, and her husband (also the photographer) and their little girl Addie joined us. It was a fun evening will all of them, and we met the Pastor of their church. Yesterday's wedding was magical...it was a perfect fit for the two of them...simple with close family members in attendance (They are having a larger more public reception in June.) The both had written their "expressions of love", and both of them shared thoughts that brought tears to everyone. It wasn't a long ceremony - about 20 minutes. In fact the pictures before and the cake and socializing afterwards involved more time. We arrived about noon, and we were leaving by before 3 p.m., as Tyler and Carmen were going to go to a few other places for more photos and video. Carmen's mom and brothers and best friend drove up earlier in the morning to help her with her hair, so Carmen was able to spend time with them prior to the wedding. I haven't heard from her since a last hug yesterday, and I'm hoping to hear from her today. The whole thing is a bit surreal. I don't think it could have been scripted any better...I just wish she and Tyler and Tyler's family wasn't so far away - not that a ninety-minute drive is all that far. I guess it's just not as convenient as a 30-minute drive. I briefly met with Tyler's family here-and-there yesterday, but his family wasn't at the rehearsal. They seem very nice, and I'd like to get to know them better - here their stories and know them more personally. Tyler is an awesome guy, and he makes Carmen very happy. I'm so excited for both of them as they begin their marriage together. They just fit very well. It's a bunch of mixed emotions for Dad to watch his daughter's wedding. It's magical and exciting, and it's sad and reflective. We don't know it when we are young, but as we grow and get old we indeed do realize how time really does seem to fly just like all of our grandparents and parents tried to tell us when we were younger. I love you Carmen...I miss my little Carmen Marie, but I have great memories. At the same time, I'm overjoyed to see you so happy, and I'm thrilled to see what is next for you.

Today...I have to get my suit back to Ducky's, and then I'd really like to work on the yard...it's looking pretty bad, but I also would like to get the pool cover off the pool and let it dry. I might actually work on the pool cover first - maybe even this morning. I'd like to get it dried and folded up before I work on mowing the grass. Wait...maybe I won't do that. Maybe I'll work on the yard and then work on replacing the filter sand first. Ya...I think I will do that. I'd really like to get that filter sand replaced, and I need to do that before connecting the pump motor.

I'd like to get the camper out somewhere next weekend. The weather doesn't look great, though. I'll have to keep watching the forecast and see what might be doable.

7:33 a.m. - I start my day today sleeping in a little. Plus, I'm not going to school today; I've taken the day off. I probably could have gone with just a half day personal day, but I decided just to make it a full day. Amber and I need to get to Fort Madison for Carmen and Tyler's wedding rehearsal. And that means I need to go into Ducky's today to pick up the suit I rented for the occasion. By the time I drive in, try on the suit to make sure it works, and drive home, that's probably a couple of hours. And we are hoping to leave as soon as we can when Amber can get home from school. Heck, just take the whole day...I've earned them, we've accomplished a lot this week in class, and I've got today's assignments ready to go.

So now, I'm listening to North Pole Radio (Christmas music) because despite of the crappy weather currently outside, I want to be in a good mood. I'm excited to meet Tyler's family, plus Amber and I are going to have a bit of a "get-a-way" overnight trip, which is nice. We're staying at a hotel in Burlington overnight, going to the wedding tomorrow, and then heading back home tomorrow afternoon. This should be a good adventure, and the best part is that I get to see my daughter in all her joy, love, and happiness on her wedding day!

So this morning as everyone else is heading to school, I'm going to write out some bills, exercise a little downstairs, and maybe read some of a book I'm currently reading. Then because Ducky's doesn't open until 10 a.m., I'll head that direction and pick up my suit.

6:08 a.m. - Internet is working this morning...and it's supposed to be the nicest weather day of the week. Maybe Spring will finally arrive and stay. Yesterday, the kick-off day to viewing student presentations went about as well as it could have. Today will get through some more after having a little journal write.

After school we had a teachers association meeting for the purpose of negotiations with the school district. This meeting wasn't just the negotiation team of the RTA, and we had a lengthy meeting...I don't think I was home until after 7 p.m. I was really impressed with our discussions and conversations. I think the group is working well together, and we have created a sound next proposal to present to the school district next week. I don't think I see a tentative agreement reached next week, but I do think we are getting closer.

8:00 a.m. - We're still struggling with the internet at the house. Yesterday went fine...unfortunately, many students still aren't prepared for today, but part of life is learning from mismanagement of time and resources - especially with teenagers. I'm sure I've had my share of those lessons. Today we are back to a Free Read Wednesday, and then we'll see the videos that are prepared.

Last night's game at Knoxville was cold but not as windy...umpiring fresh/soph games is mentally challenging for me. I guess I'm getting old.

Today's weather looks like rain, but we have games at Sherrard, and that field holds up pretty well. If we don't have games, I have a meeting to attend after school, and I'm not sure how long that will last.

8:14 a.m. - We had trouble with the internet again today at home. It's back to work today...not all that excited. I have softball games today, and the sun is supposed to be present and the wind is not - two improvements over recent days. The temps are still going to be cold, and I'm very tired of the cold temps.

Easter Sunday went well. We spent the morning with Amber's family, and then we spent the afternoon with my family. Chase and Cole attended, but Carmen was unable to, so I dropped off her and Tyler's Easter card in the mail yesterday.

Yesterday was a "try to get things done day". I had various little things here and there to do. This week at school should be fine, and I'm taking the day off on Friday in order to comfortably get ready for our little trip to Fort Madison/Burlington for Carmen and Tyler's wedding. Amber and I are going to stay in Burlington, and we hope to check into our hotel after traveling from school on Friday, and then hustle down to Fort Madison for the rehearsal. Saturday is the wedding, and it's just a very small family wedding with out a reception. There will be a picnic type reception in June at the fairgrounds in Aledo for more family and friends to attend and celebrate.

6:33 a.m. - Happy Easter!

Yesterday was busy...softball double-header and then cards with the boys last night - I held my own. I'm not sure I won much at our annual poker game night, but I don't believe I lost much.

Today will be busy again. This morning we have an egg hunt and breakfast for all of Amber's side of the family. Then I'll head to my mom's for Easter lunch. Hopefully tonight is quiet. I'm hoping to see my children sometime, but I don't know when that will be. I didn't sleep very well last nigh - think I had a Pepsi to late in the evening.

6:54 a.m. - Sunny and 30 degrees. I miss camping, but it's pretty cold. I did season the blackstone griddle yesterday. I think its ready but I need to learn how to clean the griddle. Huffman's has a sale going on, and I may stop and see if there are some griddle cleaning supplies there.

I've got a double-header today at ROWVA...the diamond they use is awful. In fact, it's awful for a junior high game, let alone a varsity double-header. And did I mention it's 30 degrees? At 11 a.m., it's not going to be much warmer. Plus, it's an hour drive. I'm not sure how much money I'm really making with gas prices so high.

Later on today I'm playing cards with the boys. A few of the old friends can't make it this year because they are with their children and now grandchildren - that's totally understandable. I think there will still be five of us to shoot the crap and have some laughs.

UPDATE - 8:12 a.m. - I used the blackstone in the garage to make bacon and eggs for breakfast for me and Amber. I'd rather be in a campground with three days ahead of me of camping, but if presented with lemons, make lemonade, right? The griddle worked as expected...I think I'm going to make a stop at Huffman's in Aledo to look for some accessories. I didn't like the egg circles that came with my spatulas.

Here's the thing about S.A.T. day....it's extremely boring for the teacher that has to proctor the assessment, but it's also one of those days. I know this sounds a bit cruel on my part, but from Day 1 of the school year I try and try and try to motivate the students - to prepare them - to advise them. I tell them the school year will go fast. I give them opportunities to practice in class and show them how they can practice even more outside of class. And the vast majority of them won't act on my efforts. The look at me and respond to me like they know better, and I'm wasting their time to do more important things like their sports, their jobs, their phones, etc...

And then while they are taking the test, I see the look - the look of frustration and concern. And I have mixed feelings for them and me. I want to feel badly for them. I honestly feel a bit of a sense of failure myself. While they are taking the test, Google can't help them, their friends can't help them, their parents can't help them, shared copies of docs through Google Drive can't help them. They are faced with the reality that they are on their own with a difficult challenge. Now some of them just don't care, so the test is easy for them. They think it's funny they don't try. Their "come to Jesus" moment won't arrive until later in life...perhaps a few years, perhaps even longer. And there will be a few that find a way to never have to work at life. So watching students take the S.A.T. is a reminder for me to keep trying because there will come a time when they need to be able to read and edit and perform math skills, and they will need to face difficult challenges on their own without the assistance of others. So I need to keep trying to do my best to try to help them.

In other news...the camper is ready, my umpiring gear is ready, heck, the pool is ready to be opened. The shed is ready to get the pool stuff out. I even charged the battery in the lawnmower last weekend. I even got my new Blackstone delivered yesterday. EVERYTHING IS READY for some nice freaking weather! And yet, it's not going to arrive for the foreseeable future. Today there is a freaking high wind warning. Temps aren't supposed to get out of the low 50's through the extended forecast. It's supposed to be a bleak and drizzly Easter Sunday. Uck, Uck, Uck!

Speaking of uck. Today is an 11:30 a.m. dismissal professional development day! I despise professional development days. There is no school for Good Friday tomorrow, and there is no school on Monday. I'm going to be indoors for a lot of the weekend, but I guess I'm not going to be at work.

6:13 a.m. - We got a softball game in at Knoxville last night, despite crappy weather continuing. I had a chance to work with Jason, and then Tad made and appearance, and he took us out to supper at a local place. Then we went and looked at the house Tad is renovating. That was an evening I needed...got out on a diamond...got a little exercise...made a little money...saw some friends....just what the doctor ordered. Then I got home and went to bed, and I had the best night of sleep I've had in a while.

Today is S.A.T. day...ugh...longest teaching day of the year. The group of students I have is pretty good, so that helps.

And this weather....UGH, UGH, UGH. This weekend looks cold....highs in low 50's maybe. I did purchase a Blackstone griddle for the camper. Even if we don't do any camping, I'm going to work with that griddle to get it seasoned and cook with it a little.

6:28 a.m. - My softball game was canceled yesterday, and yet I wasn't all that disappointed. The weather was more spring like, which just felt good. Bruce finished up the electrical work, so I needed to go pay him, and then I came home and grilled some burgers for supper. Then it was a little television and bed. I wish I would have gone for a walk, but it didn't happen. I'm really struggling to get some exercise; I can't seem to break through this cold to get up and do much of anything. I hope a little more better weather will help, but the forecast doesn't look all that good.

Yesterday at school, all but one of the English III sections used their time quietly and productively. I guess four-out-of-five isn't too bad. The same thing will probably occur today. I have another softball game scheduled today; it's at Knoxville, so I'm going to have to hurry. I know it's only Tuesday, but I just want this week to be over.

Monday, April 11 - Happy Birthday Cole

6:13 a.m. - Yesterday I helped mom get Newman to horse training school. Other than struggling to back up the trailer once we got back to the farm, the event went off pretty much without any issues. When I got back home, there were grandchildren to play with, and then it was television and an early night to bed. I did actually get a good night's sleep, and this morning I feel better this morning than I have in several days. Maybe I'm finally over that nasty cold that I couldn't shake.

Today I'd like to see Cole, but I have a softball game. I have a partner I've never worked with, but it's just a F/S game at UTHS....in recent years, the Panthers have not had very good lower level teams. In school I have some assignments to look over and score; I need to review the assignment students are working on; and then the students will have time to work in class. This should be a pretty simple day today and tomorrow.

And then Wednesday is S.A.T. day, which really sucks, but it's not hard. Then Thursday is an 11:30 day followed by a 4-day Easter weekend. So this is basically a weird week that shouldn't be all that difficult.

10:43 a.m. - Late entry compared to most mornings...I have a bad cold, so when I woke up this morning, I fed the cats, watched the news headlines and went back to bed. Yesterday went okay...I got some things done around the house, read my book a little, and then I completed my announcing job at mom's trivia night. I didn't get to spend much time with friends and family, but I did get a chance to talk with Greg a little after the event.

Today, after my late start, I'm going to try to get a few more things done around the house, help my with the horse transportation, and then hopefully get to bed early for a nice night of sleep.

7:44 a.m. - Yesterday went well. I didn't have a game to umpire in the cold, so Shawn, Amber, and I went to the Blue Cat in Rock Island and had supper. Then we came home and watched a movie. The Power Of The Dog is supposed to be an awesome film worthy of lots of awards. I thought it was weird and not enjoyable...sometimes I wonder why some films are so honored. Today we are off to watch a pee-wee soccer game, and then later tonight I have to help my mom out with her trivia night for her saddle club. Maybe in between I can install that drain valve on the camper I need to install.

Tomorrow I'm helping my mom with moving a horse. She's having a horse trained since her horse died last year.

6:06 a.m. - Another Friday has arrived...another morning with snow showers...ugh. Yesterday my game in Monmouth was canceled, but then I was scheduled again in Prophetstown, which was then later canceled. I need the money, but the weather was awful. The weather was so awful, I turned the heat on in the camper next to the house because I was afraid of the overnight temperatures. I don't have antifreeze in the lines now, and I don't want any problems. I'll have to remember to turn the heat off before I go to school.

In regards to school, yesterday's push of the training path project went pretty well. Today should be okay too. I have a little "quiz" activity, and then students will be allowed to have time in class to work, which essentially means they will waste time by being on their phones.

This weekend is going to be a little busy. I think today, an electrician will be here to do a couple of electrical jobs I've been needing to get done. Then tomorrow we may be watching Brooklyn's first soccer game. And then tomorrow night I have to help my mom with her saddle club's trivia night. Then on Sunday, I need to help my mom with the horse that is going to get trained. Next week is going to be a bit of a weird week....no school Friday, half day Thursday, S.A.T. day on Wednesday. May will be getting here before we know it...if the weather would just figure that out, that would be nice.

6:27 a.m. - It's garbage day today...weather forecast seems to be getting worse...calling for snow tomorrow. Yesterday wrapped up the list of presenters for the training path series. Now students start to work on their projects.

Today I'm supposed to umpire, but there is rain and cold and wind in the forecast, and I don't have a partner, so hopefully the games at Monmouth-Roseville will be canceled. I could use a night off, as I didn't sleep well, and my cold seems to be getting worse. Maybe last night's negotiating meeting with the school board added to the restless sleep. The meeting was productive, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

6:13 a.m. - Umpiring in the cold and wind and sprinkles was again not fun in Orion last night. I guess it was still a paycheck. I did seem to add to my cold symptoms, though. I'm just not feeling good. Yesterday the school day went fine...Ms. Daly had good information for the students considering a 4-year public university path after high school.

Today will be a long day. First and foremost is the final presenter in the training path series. This is a really good path for many of our students, but I have a new presenter, so there is always some uncertainty associated with a "newbie". Apprenticeships are a great avenue for some students, but this path is hard for many other students to even engage with. We'll see how it goes.

Then after school, the RTA negotiating team has another meeting with CUSD 300 regarding the new collective bargaining agreement. My hope is that we will have meaningful progress tonight. Again, we'll see how it goes. The weather is going to continue to suck, so I'll be losing a paycheck, but I won't be on a cold, damp, windy softball diamond.

6:12 p.m. - I worked a softball date at Mercer County...I don't enjoy umpiring in the cold. I did make it back home in time to see Brinley for her birthday. I also was able to watch a little of the NCAA championship game, even though I dozed in and out of sleep. And all of that was after surviving the first day back from Spring Break.

Today, Western Illinois University will be visiting to tell us about a university path; this is a presentation that many students have been waiting to see while others can't see themselves even thinking about that path. I'm then scheduled to work another softball game tonight - this time at Orion. I'm working with Jason, so it will be nice to see him. There is a chance for showers in the area, but most of the rain is supposed to wait until later in the day.

4/4/22 - The weather doesn't look good again for this week, and it's back to work. Finally, it appears I caught a cold overnight. Other than those things, I guess life is fine.

I did get to see Cole and Chase last night, which was a surprise, and I did get to watch the women's NCAA tourney game.

Before all that, it was a day to pull-out of camping weekend from Loud Thunder and head home. Backing the camper into the spot next to the house was challenging as usual, but we eventually got it parked, unloaded, and closed down. I did get a drain valve removed which was good. I ordered a replacement part, and it should be delivered this week sometime. I give the entire camping weekend a solid "B". The weather was cool all weekend, but yesterday and Friday were both good days. Saturday was a wash, but we were able to watch the men's NCAA final four Saturday night in the camper, so that was good. Basically, it was a great weekend to break out the camper and get it all "season ready".

Today at a school, I think I will find another good book to read. The guidance department is going to be visiting to assist students with their SAT tests which are coming up next week. I am supposed to have softball tonight, tomorrow night, and Thursday, but the weather is going to be yucky.

Friday, April 1

6:35 a.m. - It's Friday! It's not snowing! It's still Spring Break!

Yesterday was a busy one. I went and picked up that air compressor. I probably paid a little too much for it, but I think it's going to be better than my current air compressor, and it was cheaper than buying something new. I'm going to try it out today. Then I came home and did some packing for our weekend camping trip to Loud Thunder. Then I went to West Central High School and made a surprise visit to Carmen, and she was indeed surprised. We just had lunch together, but it was wonderful to see her in her building. After that, I drove completely the opposite direction and went and got fitted for a suit to rent at Ducky's Formal wear. I probably could have spent the same amount of money or less and just bought a suit, but then I would have had to had it tailored, which would have meant some additional trips. With that in mind, I just bit the bullet and did the rental. If my baby girl is going to get married, I should be in a nice looking suit. After that work, I then stopped by the casino and played some slots. So here's the deal....basically, the entire day, I got to do what I wanted to do. I know that sounds selfish, but it's just nice to have a day like that every once in awhile....I didn't have to be a husband, grandfather, teacher, umpire...I just got to do what I wanted to do.

So today....YES...we are going camping....YES...we may be the only ones in the campground. The temps are definitely going to be colder than normal, BUT the latest forecast this morning is not calling for snowflakes in our area, and if we are going to get some rain, it should be early tomorrow morning. So while we may be bundled up in warmer clothes, most of the weekend should be dry. Part of this weekend camping trip is just "set-up"...getting everything back together and packed and assembled. The big part of the day today is getting the water lines flushed and operational, since there is still antifreeze in them now.

And with Loud Thunder being so close, if we do forget something, it's easy to drive back and pick up what we need. I just checked the reservations at Loud Thunder, and so far Shawn and I are the only campers in Deer Haven. There are three reservations in White Oak, so we won't be the only reservations in the park this weekend.
