Saturday, February 28

9:35 a.m. - Yesterday...attended a good PD experience at the ROE Principals' Roundtable.  Got through a RR PD experience at AES, including a meeting about a revised plan for kindergarten next school year.  And then we got through an awesome regional final boys game at Farmington between Farmington and Sherrard.  That was a busy day yesterday!

Today we have Kollyns, and we are going to go watch some youth basketball at the Aledo YMCA.  And then...well...I don't know, but as I've said many times, I'm sure something will find me.

Friday, February 27

5:11 a.m. - Yesterday was a good day, sort of.  I got some things done at school; I got through the admin meeting; and then we got through the girls sectional game at Galesburg.  It was an awesome atmosphere - standing room only.  It's just so cool to me to be in the atmosphere.  Unfortunately for Galesburg, Washington was lights out last night, and the Panthers beat the Silver Streaks soundly.  I felt like we had a good game as officials, but it really wasn't much of a game at all, so its hard to tell.

Today is going to be a bit weird.  I have a principals meeting in Moline at for the ROE.  Then I have a meeting at AES regarding kindergarten screening.  Then I have a game in Farmington tonight.  So today could be an adventure.

Thursday, February 26

4:55 a.m. - I'm really tired.  I could use a few more hours of sleep.  I didn't get home until about 11 p.m. last night from Farmington.  Tad and I rode together, but he had the second game when I had the first game.  My game was a little "challenging"...the two partners I had didn't exactly call the game the same way I did, so I was trying to adjust, and that usually doesn't work all that well.  Sherrard ended up pulling away from Monmouth-Roseville in the second half, so the result had nothing to do with the officiating.  It was just "one of those things" that can sometimes happen.  Yesterday at school I was able to get some things done, which was nice.

Today I have an admin meeting, which is not nice.  It's not horrible; it's just something that I don't usually look forward to.  Everybody's nice; that's not the problem.  I just don't have a lot to contribute, and I don't like to be away from the building in case there are issues there.

I also have to try to get a second grade sub this morning, which won't be easy.  I made some attempts last night from the game, but I didn't get anything confirmed.  Gosh I hope I don't have to be a sub.  Tonight is the big event, as I'm the "R" for tonight's game at Galesburg.  It's a girls 3A Secitonal Championship, and I keep getting told by folks that it very well could be the state championship game.  Both teams are really, really good.  I think Washington is ranked #1 and Galesburg is #3.  I'd like to try to figure out a way to get a nap sometime today.

Wednesday, February 25

4:35 a.m. - One down...four more to go.  Last night, I had a girls game at the Galesburg 3A girls sectional, and the game was lopsided. Washington is really good, and the Panthers were just too much for Ottawa.  That sets up a really good championship game, as Galesburg won the other semifinal.  I get to be the "R" for that game...it should be a fun one.

The day at school went well.  I was able to finish some work that needed to get done, and I got around to complete one round of fidelity checks.

One thing that didn't happen yesterday - I didn't get an assignment to the state finals.  So now I need to make a decision on getting my left knee worked on, and I believe I think it's best if I get the surgery done as soon as possible.  I don't know if that will be the final decision, but that's the way I'm leaning.

Today is another day at IC Elementary.  And then tonight I have a game at Farmington.  This one might be a tough one.  I'm working with a couple of guys that are different - one I've never worked with.  And the game is between Sherrard and Monmouth-Roseville, which could be a very good game.

Tuesday, February 24

4:50 a.m. - Yesterday was a good day!  I don't get to say that all too much, but I can.  A big accomplishment at school was to get my evaluations done for the teachers in the building.  Each year, those need to be completed by March 1, so that's a big deal each school year.  I had the summative ratings meeting with the staff members I needed to have, and then I got all the paperwork to the district office.  There was no officiating last night, but I did get some officiating news last night.  I received another girls SuperSectional assignment, which is great.  I'm going back to Bureau Valley, which is okay.  I know where I'm going, and it's 1A.  The more exciting news is to get a 1A boys sectional assignment, and that's a step up that I've been hoping for.  Again, it's only 1A, but it's a step in the right direction.  It's always good to get an assignment that's an improvement over the previous year.  Now the only thing to wait for is whether or not I'll be assigned an assignment for the girls state finals.  I really don't think that's going to happen this year, and that's okay.  If I can complete the rest of this season with my health, I will consider it a success.  Now, I just need to decide about surgery on the left knee.  I'll cross that bridge when I find out whether or not I get the state finals assignment.

Today I'll work on more accomplishments at school, and then I have a game at Galesburg tonight.

Monday, February 23

4:40 a.m. - Yesterday wasn't really the day I wanted it to be, but it wasn't a bad day.  I really wanted to get the motivation to get in some type of workout and work my legs, but that didn't happen.  I did get some school work done; I took Amber to the casino; and I did get in a visit to mom and dad.  I also did some reading of my book that I'm enjoying, and I watched some television.  Karrigan and Kollyns were here for a bit, so I helped Kollyns take a nap, and later in the evening I called Caleb too.  So it wasn't a bad day.

Today is a Monday, and it's back to school, and sometimes those can be hard days for students.  I have some things I'd like to get done.  There's no officiating tonight, so that's something to look forward to.

Sunday, February 22

6:55 a.m. - Yesterday, we went to watch Brinley and Brookly play basketball, and while I was there I got a message from Tad to ride with him to Cedar Rapids to watch Erin Danner play basketball.  It was parents day/senior day for Jason, and Tad had planned on trying to get there, so he was just looking for someone to ride along.  And it all worked out for him to pick me up in Aledo and get there.  And I did enjoy it, but we didn't get home until late afternoon, so the Saturday was basically done.   And then last night the Illini lost to UCLA.  So I guess yesterday was a good day.

Today I need to get an evaluation done.  And Amber wants to go to the casino.  And I want to go visit mom and dad's and make a visit.

Maybe I would just like to have another day to the weekend.

Saturday, February 21

6:10 a.m. - Yesterday was another productive day. I was able to get some work done at school.  And then last night, we got through our game at Galva.  It was a tough game to officiate.  One team was very aggressive and physical, and the other team wasn't.  That usually means that the team that isn't physical just wants to complain and whine about being fouled.  Plus, I was working with two guys that I normally don't work with, so we weren't exactly in sync.

Today there is no basketball to officiate which is nice.  We are going to go watch some basketball, but that's okay.  My legs don't have to work near as much as a spectator.  I'm not sure what happens after that.

Friday, February 20

4:09 a.m. Yesterday at school I was able to get some things done, and that was after I went to an elementary admin meeting.  And then I rode with Tony to A-Town to work a 1A Girls Regional Championship game.  The game went fine.  Most importantly during the day, I received a Girls Sectional assignment, and it's one of the toughest sectionals, if not the toughest sectional, in the state.  And then I found out that Bryan Sullivan is at least one of my partners.  That is all good news!  I worked with Bryan last night at A-Town, and I've worked with him before, and he's a good dude and good official.  So next week will be fun - four more post season games.  And the post-season is what makes all the hours, work, travel, and time during the season worthwhile

Today I hope to get more work done, and then I need to get over to Galva for another 1A Girls Regional Championship game.  This game should be a little closer than last night.

Thursday, February 19

4:41 a.m. - Yesterday was another day of having to substitute in an elementary classroom, and I'm not very good at being an elementary teacher.  The good news was that I didn't have any officiating, and Amber returned back home after her nice weekend in Florida.  She did say the weather wasn't as warm and sunny as she had hoped.

Today, I'd just like to have a normal day at school that I can actually just be in my role as principal.  Unfortunately, I also have some type of admin meeting.  I likely won't have much of a role to play, but I will attend and listen and take notes of things I need to accomplish to assist the admin team.

I do head to Abingdon tonight for a Girls Regional Championship game.  I do get to ride with Tony, so that will be good.

Wednesday, February 18

6:15 a.m. - Yesterday was awful at school.  Once again, I demonstrated that I'm not an effective elementary teacher.  Fortunately, we got through yesterday's basketball games at the Galva Regional.  That should be the final time I have two games in one night this season

Today...I just wish I can have a decent day at school.  Amber is scheduled to arrive home this evening, and I don't have any games tonight.

Tuesday, February 17

5:53 a.m. - Yesterday was a good day.  I didn't get anything done with the teacher evaluation materials I could have done, but I did get a lot done, and I was able to spend some time with mom and dad.  I got them supper from Chris's Corner Tap and wished them a belated Happy Anniversary.  Unfortunately the lowlight of the day was a teacher requesting a substitute for today, which I can't find.

So today will be a ridiculously long day.  I'll be substituting and then I'll be going to officiate two games in Galva.  Ugh.  My life has almost gotten to the point that I fear having a good day or good weekend because I know something bad is going to happen to make life difficult.  Retirement can't come soon enough.

Monday, February 16 - President's Day - No School!

7:21 a.m. - I finally slept well!  Maybe I just need Hogan's Heroes!  With Amber in Florida, I made it to bed around 9 p.m., and I found episodes of Hogan's Heroes on Amazon Prime.  I felt like I was in the camper!  I remember watching about 15 minutes, and I was out.  I woke up around 4:30 a.m., which is normally when we are waking up.  I used the bathroom, shut off the television, and went back to bed and slept another couple of hours.  Perfect!

So it's now me and Bella and the Today Show.

Yesterday, I had a nice day.  I got up early to take the HHR to Carmen and Tyler.  That dang car ran perfect.  I know it's silly to feel guilty and sad about a car, but I loved that little car.  It was always dependable; it helped me a lot through all the times I had sometimes three seasons of gear in it - volleyball, softball, and basketball; and it got great gas mileage.  It had over 245,000 miles on it, but that dang thing raced off to Fort Madison like it had 245.  I told Tyler all the things wrong with it that I could remember, and I told him that he can do whatever he wants with it, but he's not allowed to let Carmen drive it, and the big thing that needs to be fixed is the driver's side door.  Did I mention I loved that little car?

While getting the car down there was important, I really needed to spend some time with Caleb.  That little guy just makes me smile.  I spent a little time with him at The Sanctuary's church service, and then I spent time with him at his house while Tyler and Carmen packed up for their trip to an overnight "them night" in the Quad Cities.  And then I got to have lunch with the Hoenigs at Jimmy Johns in Burlington, and I got to hold Caleb's hand on the ride home back to Edgington.  I think we ended up getting home around 5 ish?  Caleb was sleeping when we pulled in the drive, and then Carmen and Tyler used the restroom at the house before continuing on to Sherrard where Caleb was going to spend the night with Grandma Sue.  I thought they were pulling out of the drive, but then Carmen came back in the house because Caleb had woken up and was asking for Papa!  So I hustled back outside and told Caleb I loved him and said goodbye to him.  It was awesome!

The rest of the evening was me and Bella and caring for my knees and watching television - a little NFHS, a little Winter Olympics, and then ending with Hogans Heroes.

And what to do today?  I have a bunch of little things I would like to do.  These are simple things like getting in a little workout, maybe going for a walk out at Loud Thunder, cleaning the kitty litter, washing the car, etc... just little things to take a chance to get done.  I'm also going to visit mom and dad.  Finally, I hope to tackle the classroom observation scripts I completed at school last week.  So, basically, I think today is going to be busy, but hopefully a peaceful and quiet busy.
